This wikiHow teaches you how to increase torrent download speed. You can increase your torrent download speed by practicing basic habits that can increase internet speed. Apart from that, you can also change the torrent client settings to speed up some torrents. Keep in mind that if a torrent has only a few seeds (file uploader), it will still be difficult for you to increase the download speed.
Step
Part 1 of 2: Using Common Methods
Step 1. Choose a torrent with sufficient number of seeds
Torrents that have less "seed" (uploader) than "leech" (downloader) will take longer to download than vice versa.
If a torrent has few or no seeds, you won't be able to download the entire torrent
Step 2. Close programs and services running in the background when you download
Any programs that run (especially those that drain a lot of bandwidth, like streaming) while you're downloading torrents are bound to slow down the download.
Step 3. Download one torrent at a time
If the download speed becomes slow when you download multiple torrents, we recommend that you pause all torrents and leave only one. With this action, the bandwidth previously used by multiple torrents will be allocated to only one torrent.
You can temporarily stop a torrent download by right-clicking the torrent, then clicking Pause.
Step 4. Prioritize specific torrents
If you are downloading more than one torrent, set the priority of one torrent to " High " so that it downloads faster than the other torrents in the queue:
- Right-click the desired torrent.
- Point the mouse (mouse) to Bandwidth Allocation.
- Click High.
Step 5. Avoid downloading other files when you download torrents
Again, running file sharing and streaming programs while you are running a torrent client will slow down download times.
If you share your Internet connection with one or more people, try to download torrents when no one else is downloading files or streaming
Step 6. Download torrents when internet activity is still low
This applies to activities at home or in general. Try downloading it in the middle of the night or early in the morning when no one else is using an internet connection to download files and stream.
Step 7. Connect the computer to the router (router) via ethernet
By connecting the computer to the router using an ethernet cable, the download speed will be smooth without any problems.
If this option is not possible, position the computer as close to the router as possible (or vice versa)
Step 8. Use a VPN when downloading torrents
If your ISP (internet service provider) is limiting internet speed because it doesn't approve torrent downloads, use a VPN to circumvent those restrictions.
Keep in mind that downloading illegal torrent files can blacklist your computer's IP address (as well as other criminal charges)
Part 2 of 2: Increase Speed on BitTorrent and uTorrent
Step 1. Open BitTorrent or uTorrent
Both are very popular torrent clients.
- If you don't have uTorrent yet, download and install this client at
- If you don't already have BitTorrent, download and install this client at
Step 2. Click Options in the upper left of the window
A drop-down menu will be displayed.
Step 3. Click Preferences at the top of the drop-down menu
The Preferences window will open.
Step 4. Prevent torrents from entering standby mode
This setting prevents the computer from entering Standby mode when you are downloading torrents:
- Click tab General.
- Check the box " Prevent standby if there are active torrents ".
- Click Apply.
Step 5. Enable UPnP
UPnP is a connection type that allows torrents to access the correct ports on the router:
- Click tab Connection.
- Check the "Enable UPnP port mapping" box.
- Click Apply.
Step 6. Optimize upload and download capacity
This is useful so that you don't consume too much bandwidth when uploading, while also allowing you to use an unlimited amount of bandwidth when downloading:
- Click tab Bandwidth.
- Look for the " Maximum upload rate " heading at the top of the window.
- Type 500 into the text box to the right of the "Maximum upload rate" heading.
- Make sure in the "Global Rate Limit Options" text box it says "0".
- Click Apply.
Step 7. Change the number of possible connections
This is useful for keeping your torrent profile in good standing in the community, as well as for maximizing download speeds:
- Set the "Global maximum connections" text field to 150.
- Set the "Maximum connections per torrent" text field to 100.
- Set the "Upload slots per torrent" text field to 3 to 5.
Step 8. Change the maximum number of ongoing downloads
How to do it:
- Click tab Queueing.
- Add the number in the "Maximum number of active downloads" text box.
- Click Apply.
Step 9. Click OK located at the bottom of the window
The settings you make will be saved. From now on, downloaded torrents will apply the optimized settings.
