Turns out you can peel garlic with a pair of bowls. This way, you can even peel a few cloves of garlic at once. There are several ways to peel a clove of garlic, but that may not be necessary unless you're using a sticky type of garlic.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Whisk the Garlic Bulbs
Step 1. Press the garlic until it is crumbly
Place the bulb of garlic on the kitchen table. Press firmly and quickly using the base of the wrist. This step will separate the cloves of garlic.
- This method can make the garlic fly. If there are no walls to keep the garlic from falling, just cut off the main part of the tuber, and pull out the garlic one at a time.
- You can use this method for as much garlic as you can fit in the container that is not too full.
Step 2. Prepare two bowls
The bowl you are going to use must be the right size. Choose one bowl that is larger than the other, or two equally large bowls with wide edges to hold later. The lightweight metal bowls are sturdy and easy to shake, but you can also use bowls made of other materials. When shaken, the garlic skin will come off by itself during the shaking.
You can use cups, jars, lightweight saucepans, cocktail shakers, or other sturdy containers that are easy to hold and wash afterward
Step 3. Whisk the garlic in the bowl
Put the garlic in a bowl. Turn the other bowl over and place it on top of the first bowl. Lift, hold tightly, and shake vigorously. You will need ten or fifteen whisks.
Step 4. Check the garlic
The large, white onions should be peeled by now. However, garlic that is still very fresh or the kind that is purple and sticky may need to be shaken again.
Method 2 of 2: Peeling Garlic Per Clove
Step 1. Press each clove with a knife
Press the bulb until the garlic releases, or cut the root part of the bulb with a knife and pull the garlic apart. Place the side of the broad knife flat on top of a clove of garlic. Press the knife firmly with the base of the wrist. The garlic will bruise a little and the skin can easily be peeled off. You can now chop or grind the garlic into a paste.
If you don't have a wide-bladed knife, press the garlic firmly with the base of your wrist
Step 2. Squeeze the garlic with your fingers
This method is less effective, but useful if you want to use a whole clove without bruising from the pressure. Hold a clove of garlic with the flat end over your thumb, with your index finger on the pointed end. Press to bend the onion, and remove the skin. Remove the skin intact.
This method works best for garlic with dry, thin skin
Step 3. Buy a rubber mat or a garlic peeler
A tubular garlic peeler made of silicone or rubber is inexpensive and easy to use. You just need to put the garlic in a jar, roll it on a flat surface, then, the onion peel will come off by itself.
You can also use a silicone or rubber base, and roll it up yourself. This method saves space in the kitchen because this base can be used as a jar opener or as a non-slip base
Step 4. Use a garlic grinder
A garlic grinder grinds an onion through the hole, which results in a fine garlic clove, leaving the skin on. Some cooks don't like kitchen utensils that have only one function, but they can save you a lot of time if you don't have the ninja skills to use a knife.
