In Islam, janabat bath is a major cleansing and purification that must be done under certain conditions, including after menstruation. Once you get used to it, it will feel normal to you. If you're in a hurry, you can take a "speed bath" which only contains the essential steps. However, you may need to take the time to do the perfect janabat bath. Whatever the choice, there are a few simple steps to take while showering. Just make sure you focus on purifying yourself before starting the janabat ritual.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Performing the Janabat Bathing Ritual
Step 1. Remove all jewelry and cosmetics
When taking a bath, the water should touch your entire body. Remove anything that comes into contact with the skin so that there is no obstruction between you and the water. Wipe off any nail polish or makeup so the water can get on your nails and face.
Put the jewelry in a safe place when you shower
Step 2. Intend to purify yourself
Before starting the ritual, focus your heart and mind to intend to purify yourself. No need to read intentions aloud. You can say to yourself, "I intend to take a private bath to purify myself."
Step 3. Turn on the tap and take a shower
Turn on the water tap and let the temperature be to your liking. Remove all clothing and jewelry and start bathing.
- We recommend that you use clean running water when taking a bath. If you live in an area that is experiencing a clean water crisis, you can use other water.
- You can clean yourself as usual before taking a bath. Use shampoo and soap as usual, then start the mandatory bath.
Step 4. Rinse nose and mouth
When bathing in the shower, tilt your head back and let some water enter your mouth. Gargle, then dispose of the water. You can wash your nose by tilting your head back and letting some water enter your nose.
Step 5. Let the water run all over your body, at least once
After rinsing your mouth and nose, let the water run all over your body. If you are in a hurry, you can just let the water run once. Just make sure you turn your body so the water hits the front, back, and sides.
If you have extra time, you can wet your body 3 times. This is the recommended amount for perfecting a janabat bath
Step 6. Make sure the water touches all parts of the body
The body cannot be purified if the water has not cleansed all parts of the body. This covers your scalp! It's not enough to just wet your hair. Be sure to part your hair so the water can touch your scalp.
- If your hair is in a braid, you don't need to remove it. You can still wet your scalp with water.
- When you're done, get out of the shower and dry yourself off with a clean towel.
Method 2 of 2: Perfecting the Janabat Bath according to the Sunnah
Step 1. Begin by expressing your intention to purify yourself
It is very important to state the intention in the heart. Before starting to take a bath, mention that you want to take a private bath to purify yourself. You don't need to say it out loud.
You can say to yourself "I intend to take a bath to purify myself"
Step 2. Take off your clothes and go to the bathroom
Turn on the shower to the desired temperature. Take off your clothes, jewelry, and cosmetics, and start showering. It is better to do a janabat bath with clean running water.
You can use other water if you don't have access to clean water
Step 3. Say bismillah and wash your hands 3 times
Say bismillah which means "in the name of Allah". Begin to wash your right hand up to the elbow. Repeat this step 3 times and make sure to wash between your fingers. If you have, do the same thing on the left hand and wash it 3 times as well.
Step 4. Use your left hand to clean your genitals
Pat or rub your entire body with water. Wash all areas of the body carefully, especially the vulva, after menstruation. Make sure the water touches all parts of the body.
Step 5. Use a bottle or perfume to get rid of bad odors
Traditionally, women usually wear a jebat after menstruation to get rid of bad odors. You can pour a little perfume into the palm of your hand and rub it into the vulva area.
- If you don't have hair, just use another available fragrance.
- Don't put a sting or perfume into the vagina because it can cause irritation.
Step 6. Sprinkle water over the head 3 times and make sure the water touches the scalp
Use a scoop or hand to collect the water, then pour it over your head. Brush your hair as much as possible so that the water hits your scalp.
Some people prefer to splash water on one side of the head first, then move to the other side of the head and into the middle
Step 7. Use both hands to wash the whole body
You can use both hands to make sure the water covers your entire body. For example, use your hands to pat water on your armpits and ankles.
Get out of the bathroom and dry yourself with a clean towel after you finish doing the ritual bath
Tips
- The ban on bathing during menstruation is just a myth. Bathing during menstruation is highly recommended by doctors.
- Make sure you also perform a ritual bath after intercourse.
- The janabat bath is a much more complex ritual than wudu.
