This wikiHow teaches you how to recover a lost or forgotten Gmail password using the Gmail website or the Gmail mobile app.

Method 1 of 2: Using the Gmail Website
Step 1. Visit
Use the link or type the URL into a web browser.
If the email address or phone number associated with the account is not automatically filled in, type the address or phone number in the field with the appropriate label and click “ NEXT ”.
Step 2. Click the Forgot password?
shown below the password field.
Step 3. Enter the last password you remember and click Next
- If you can't remember any passwords you've used before, click the option “ Try a different question ” which is under the gray box.
- Keep clicking " Try a different question ” until you find an answerable question, then answer the question and click “ Next ”.
Step 4. Follow the instructions shown on the screen
You will be asked to make one of the following options:
- Confirmation of the message sent to the phone number associated with the Gmail account;
- Confirm the message sent to the email address associated with the Gmail account;
- Confirm email sent to the recovery email account you set up, or
- Enter an email address that you can check/access immediately.
Step 5. Open the email or message sent by Google
Step 6. Enter the verification code listed in the message into the field displayed on the screen
Step 7. Enter the new password and confirm it in the column with the appropriate label
Step 8. Click Change password
Step 9. Click ACCEPT
Now, your password has been recovered and you can log into Gmail using it.
- If you can't enter your previous password or receive a message on the phone number, email address, or recovery email account that's linked to your Gmail account, you'll be asked to briefly tell Google why you can't access your account (option “briefly tell us” why you can't access your account”). Enter your reason and click “ Submit ”.
- Google will get back to you in 3-5 days (on business days).
Method 2 of 2: Using the Gmail App
Step 1. Open the Gmail app
This app is marked by a red and white icon that looks like a sealed envelope.
Step 2. Touch + Add an email address
Step 3. Touch Google
Step 4. Enter the email address or phone number associated with your Gmail account in the appropriate field
Step 5. Touch NEXT which is in the bottom right corner
Step 6. Touch the Forgot password?
under the password field.
Step 7. Enter the last password you remember and touch NEXT
- If you can't remember any previously used passwords, tap the option “ Try another way to sign in ” below the password field.
- Keep touching the option " TRY ANOTHER WAY TO SIGN IN until you find a question that can be answered. Answer the question, then touch “ NEXT ”.
Step 8. Follow the instructions shown on the screen
You will be prompted to perform one of the following commands:
- Confirmation of the message sent to the phone number associated with the Gmail account;
- Confirm the message sent to the email address associated with the Gmail account;
- Confirm email sent to the recovery email account you set up, or
- Enter an email address that you can check/access immediately.
Step 9. Open the email or message sent by Google
Step 10. Enter the verification code listed in the message into the field shown on the screen
Step 11. Enter the new password and confirm it in the column with the appropriate label
Step 12. Touch NEXT
Step 13. Touch ACCEPT
Now, your password has been successfully recovered and you can log into your Gmail account using it.
