Recommending someone on LinkedIn is the perfect way to show someone your support. A positive recommendation can make it easier for the person to attract the attention of job seekers and get a job. To do this, you just need to access the LinkedIn site and search for the profile of the person to recommend. Then, include specific information about your initial introduction to the person, as well as the reasons behind your belief in his or her privilege as an employee.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Accessing LinkedIn
Step 1. Go to the LinkedIn webpage
Go to the https://www.linkedin.com/ website. If you are already a member of the LinkedIn community, the LinkedIn homepage should open immediately after. If not, you will first need to enter your email address and password into the fields provided, then click Sign In.
Step 2. Go to the page of the contact you want to recommend
Type the name of the person to recommend in the search box at the top of the page, then click the name that appears to go to your contact's profile.
Step 3. Click the elliptical icon on the person's profile
To be precise, the icon is located at the top of the page, to the right of the contact's profile photo. Later, several menu options will appear, one of which you can click to write a recommendation.
Step 4. Click Recommend [Name]
You can see these options at the bottom of the menu that appears. Please click on it. After that, a column will appear containing several things that you must fill in regarding the identity of the person, as well as their relationship with you.
Step 5. Follow the prompts
Usually, you will first be asked to fill in various basic information, such as your relationship with the person and the name of your company. After that, a text box will appear where you can fill in your recommendations.
Part 2 of 3: Getting Started with Recommendations
Step 1. Think about the person's career goals
Many people have various abilities that can be applied to various career fields. To focus on the skills that will be the main topic of your recommendation, try to think about the person's career goals. What kind of work are they looking for? What information do you need to include to help him land the job?
If a recommendation is written for someone who works as a writer or editor, you will know that the main goal of that person is to become an editor in a media. Therefore, think about the various skills that media workers need to have when writing these recommendations. If the person wants to be a writer, for example, try sharing information about their internship experience with them in the local print media
Step 2. Think of a positive and impactful introductory sentence
Remember, job seekers have to read thousands of profiles and job applications every day. To get their attention, don't start your recommendation with a very general sentence, such as "Bill is a hard worker." Instead, use sentences that are more attention-grabbing and can stand out your recommendation among the thousands of other recommendations on the LinkedIn page.
- Remember, your goal is to get the job seeker to stop the search and think, “This is the right person for us to hire.” Therefore, focus on finding the qualities of him that you admire the most, then finding creative ways to represent them in writing.
- For example, don't just say, "Bill is a great writer." Instead, try saying, “Almost no one is willing to spend their leisure time in the afternoon dwelling on a single sentence. However, Bill is extremely dedicated to doing just that and demonstrating his qualities as a writer."
Step 3. Communicate your relationship with the recommended person
After writing the introductory sentence, share information about your relationship with the person. Generally, job seekers will ignore recommendations written by friends. That is, they prioritize recommendations given by someone who really knows the person's professional abilities.
For example, you might say, "I was superintendent of the school newspaper when Bill finished his last semester."
Step 4. Allude to his abilities in a very specific way
After providing information about some general abilities, mention the specific things that the person does, as well as the benefits of these abilities in the work he does.
For example, “Bill is a very talented writer. In addition, he also has the patience, dedication, and work ethic to make his qualities shine even more. He never misses a deadline and pays attention to every detail in all aspects of his work."
Part 3 of 3: Completing Recommendations
Step 1. Focus on the salient characteristics
After listing some common characteristics, focus on the characteristics that stand out the most as the main topic of your recommendation. So that job seekers don't receive too much information in a single recommendation, try to think of one characteristic that is most special about that person. What characteristic or ability do you most admire?
For example, “One of Bill's strengths lies in his creativity. When I gave a written assignment that was considered boring by other students, Bill could actually change the point of view of writing to be more interesting. He could turn the topic of building a new parking lot into an investigative article about university donations that were not managed properly."
Step 2. Share the person's accomplishments
Does he have any particularly special accomplishments you can share? Remember, job seekers are always interested in concrete professional achievements, especially those involving statistics. This achievement can show what the person can provide for the company.
For example, you might write, “While most people only write one article a week, Bill is able to submit five articles at a time. In fact, I noticed a 20% increase in online readership after Bill's article went up."
Step 3. Describe the relationship of the person's achievements to their characteristics
After mentioning the achievements, try to relate them to the characteristics of the person you are recommending. Thus, job seekers can have a clearer picture of the characteristics of the person.
For example, “Bill's ability to work quickly and attract more readers is a testament to Bill's high creativity and passion for his career. In my eyes, Bill is someone who is always willing to put in the maximum amount of time and energy to maximize his performance in the office."
Step 4. End the recommendation with a personal statement
When closing a recommendation, make a personal statement, such as your positive memory of working with that person, as well as your hopes for the future.
For example, you might say, “We will definitely miss Bill a lot, but I'm personally really excited to see what his career achievements are after this. I have great faith that Bill's career has a long way to go, and I can't wait to see his success one day."
Step 5. Reread the recommendations you have made
Before uploading it, re-read the contents of the recommendation several times to make sure there are no fatal spelling, punctuation, and/or grammatical errors. If possible, wait an hour or so before reading the recommendations to make sure your mind and eyes are completely clear while doing so.
Tips
- If you want to enrich your recommendations on LinkedIn personally, the best way to do this is to write recommendations for your former and current colleagues. Humans have a tendency to return favors after receiving your kindness in writing a recommendation. For that, try sending a coworker an email indicating your desire to write a recommendation for them. While the offer is unlikely to be turned down, they may ask you to focus the content of the recommendation on a specific scope of work or ability.
- Don't just give recommendations to your coworkers. In fact, personal references for friends and relatives are also important, you know! In fact, personal recommendations are actually much more important because personal relationships of course have a deeper intensity and have a longer duration than business relationships which are only temporary. However, make sure the content of your recommendations remains purposeful, such as focusing on the professional qualities that employers are commonly looking for.
- The LinkedIn app will display search results based on the number of recommendations and keywords in the profile with the name you are looking for. Therefore, make sure your recommendation contains keywords that reflect the person's dream career opportunity, and the best way to find out this information is to ask the person directly.
