When doing basic home repairs, we are often faced with jobs that look easy but can be very confusing. Replacing the doorknob is one of them! If you have trouble changing the doorknob, don't worry! The wikiHow site will help you. Just start with Step 1 below.
Step
Step 1. Remove the fixtures holding the doorknobs together
There are many different types of doorknobs, as well as their manufacturers. Depending on the above factors, as well as the age of the doorknob, there are many different ways to remove the appliance. Here are various ways that have been compiled from the first method to try:
- Screw Method: Remove all visible screws. The standard location of the screws is around the latch plate between the two sides of the door. The location of the other screws may vary, depending on the type of doorknob and the manufacturer. Try looking for a round knob plate on one side of the door or on the neck of the knob itself.
- Hole Method: Look for a small hole in the stem or bottom of the doorknob, there may be a small hole containing a set of inner screws that can be removed using an L key. If you see a hole without a screw in it, there may be an unlock inside. Find a wire (hanger) or other piece of equipment that fits the hole, then press the knob in different positions. When trying different positions, keep the pressure on the knob (pull it from the door). Either position by pressing the tool into the hole will release the latch.
- Back Plate Method: Check the round plate behind the door. The plate is called a rosette. If there are gaps in the rosette, use a flat screwdriver to open the plate. There is a hard plate behind it which may have two gaps. Use a flashlight to see if there are any small screws securing the plate to the door. The screw is usually located in the gap with the larger end of the hole. Try flipping the hard plate with a screwdriver in the outer opening so that the screw is in line with the larger hole. Once the screw is in the knob hole, the rosette and plate will come off.
- Latch method: Unscrew the round plate that surrounds the knob using a knife, flat screwdriver, or small tool. The plate will come off easily. With the plate open, you will see a thick metal plate that was previously covered with a round plate. There are holes or gaps with visible slots in the plate. Slide the latch down and the doorknob will come off easily.
- Thread method: Turn the round plate around the knob counterclockwise using a wrench or hand until it loosens. By hand, twist the plate until it is completely released. Do this on both sides. In the thread of the door handle which is now exposed, a hole will be seen. Turn the handle until you see a spring or slot in the hole. Press the spring or latch with a screwdriver, then pull the handle. The door handle will come off easily.
Step 2. Remove the door handle
Once the mechanism is open, the knob can be pulled outward. Take them off and put them aside.
Step 3. Remove the hook
This is the metal plate on the edge of the door where the latch bolt attaches. Unscrew the screws at the top and bottom of the hook, then slowly open the plate using a flat-blade screwdriver.
Step 4. Remove the inner mechanism
With the latch open, you can pull it and other internal mechanisms away from the door. Finished! Use the manufacturer's instructions for installing a new doorknob or follow the wikiHow's instructions.
