You may be looking forward to using your newly purchased Blackstone brand grill, but wait a minute! Before cooking anything, it is highly recommended to lubricate the cookware to create a non-stick coating that can add flavor to the food and prevent scratching. With a few simple steps, you can lubricate the base of your Blackstone grill so it can be used for a long time!
Step
Method 1 of 2: Cleaning and Lubricating the Grill
Step 1. Clean the toaster with soap and water when it is new
Put warm water into a 2 liter capacity bucket. Add the soap and stir until well combined. After that, pour a little soapy water over the grill. Take some kitchen paper towels and rub soap and water over them. Finally, wipe the grill surface with a clean kitchen paper until it is completely dry.
- Wash new grills with soap before use. This method will clean the cooking oil greased onto the grill surface to prevent damage and rust during the shipping process.
- If you want to lubricate an old grill, skip this step – applying soap to an already used grill can permanently damage the coating.
Step 2. Choose an oil rich in fatty acids to lubricate the grill
Choose one of the following high-fat oil options: vegetable oil, vegetable oil, flax oil, extra virgin olive oil, and coconut oil. You can also use animal fat if you prefer.
- Use oils that are rich in fatty acids – which are listed as a percentage of fat on the nutrition information label – for optimal adhesion to the grill surface.
- Avoid products that contain trans fatty acids and are associated with health problems, such as coronary heart disease, obesity, and liver dysfunction.
Step 3. Turn on the grill to the highest heat setting and wait for 10 to 15 minutes
Find a propane tank and turn it on by turning the valve counterclockwise. Now, set the grill heat to the highest level and wait. Once the top of the toaster turns brown, you can move on with the process!
- Wear heat-resistant gloves to be safe.
- Make sure the grill is completely dry before turning it on.
- For grills with a specific temperature setting, turn the knob to 177°C.
Step 4. Pour 30 to 45 ml of oil over the surface of the grill
The oil will create a natural nonstick coating and add to the delicious taste of the dish. Pour the oil of your choice over the entire surface of the grill and smooth it with a paper towel. Use food tongs to move the paper towels if your hands feel hot. Bend down and check the grease on each side to make sure it's even.
Make sure there are no dry areas or oil that has accumulated in one spot
Step 5. Wipe the corners, edges and corners of the grill with oil
Blot a little oil onto a piece of kitchen paper or use the paper towel you used to wipe the grill surface. Now, use the paper towels to apply the oil to the grill's surface around the top.
Make sure you also clean the side of the grill facing out
Step 6. Let the oil heat up for 15 to 30 minutes or wait for some smoke to come out
After turning the grill to maximum heat, the top will slowly turn black. Wait for the smoke to begin to escape and fill the top of the grill – this is called the “smoke point” and usually appears after 30 minutes. Once the smoke has risen, leave the grill on until the smoke clears.
Step 7. Turn off the grill and let it rest for 10 minutes
Once the smoke clears, turn off the grill. After it cools down a bit, you are considered to have completed one lubrication process. From here, you should repeat the process until you reach the right level of lubrication.
Place your hand about 2.5 cm above the grill to check the temperature
Step 8. Lubricate and preheat the toaster 1 to 4 times or until it turns dark brown in color
Turn the grill back on to maximum temperature and reheat for 10 to 30 minutes. After that, lubricate the surface again with oil and wait until the smoke point appears. Keep repeating this process until the top of the grill turns a dark brown color – usually requiring 2 to 3 times of lubrication.
Mix the oils for different flavor combinations. For example, use virgin olive oil twice and replace it with coconut oil in the third lubrication process
Step 9. Wipe the grill surface with cooking oil to complete the process
The final touch of this process is to apply the cooking oil of choice to prevent oxidation that triggers rust. Before putting it into storage, pour a little oil on 2 or 3 kitchen paper towels and lightly moisten the top of the grill.
Wait for the grill to cool before lightly grease it
Method 2 of 2: Storing and Caring for the Grill after Lubrication
Step 1. Store the toaster in a shady and dry place, then attach the cover
Place a thick cover over the grill to prevent rust and weather damage. Do not store it in a hot and humid area – this can damage the lubricating layer. If you have extra funds, you can store it in a special bag, especially if the grill is left outside.
Keep the zipper of the storage bag open about 5 to 10 cm to prevent rust
Step 2. Clean the toaster after each use with paper towels and hot water
Once you start using the grill, each use will add a thicker layer of grease. So, never clean it with soap. However, use a spatula to gently scrape the remaining food off the surface of the grill. After that, clean the surface with dry kitchen paper. To get rid of stubborn food residue, put boiling water in a 2 liter bucket, then pour it over the area and let it sit for 5 minutes so the water can wash away the residue. Wipe the area with a paper towel afterwards.
Pour 35 grams of salt on the dirty area to help the cleaning process
Step 3. Remove rust with a wire brush or 40- to 60-grit sandpaper
If you find rust, clean the stain immediately before it gets worse. Use a wire brush or fine sandpaper to scrub the rusty area until it's smooth again. Make sure you press hard enough when scrubbing the stained area.
Purchase a wire brush or sandpaper at grocery and kitchen supply stores
Step 4. Lubricate the grill with a light layer of oil after cleaning it to maintain the lubricating layer
A little oil can keep the lubricating layer and prevent rust build-up. You are free to choose any cooking oil for this purpose. You can even use nonstick oil spray for cooking.
- Lubricate the grill after removing food residue and rust.
- Over time, the surface of the grill will darken and become less sticky. If not, it means that you did the wrong maintenance on the tool.
