This wikiHow teaches you how to create a currency converter with Microsoft Excel. If you only want to convert one currency to another, you can use Excel's simple multiplication formula. However, if you are using Windows, you can install the Kutools add-on for Microsoft Excel. This add-on allows you to convert currencies at the latest exchange rates automatically. Although the process is more complicated, Kutools conversion results will be more accurate than manual conversion results.

Method 1 of 2: Performing Manual Conversion
Step 1. Use a search engine to find out the current exchange rate
Enter the keyword currency converter in the address bar or search bar of your browser, then select the currency you want to compare in the box at the top of the search results. The current exchange rate will appear on the screen.
For example, if you want to compare the rupiah to the US dollar, select Dollars in the box at the top of the search results, and Indonesian Rupiah in the box below.
Step 2. Click the green icon with a white X to open Microsoft Excel
Step 3. Click the Blank workbook option in the upper left corner of the Excel window
If you are using a Mac, click New > Blank Workbook
Step 4. Create an exchange rate conversion table by following these steps:
- Enter the name of the first currency in the field A1 (for example USD).
- Enter the first currency value in the column B1. The value of this first currency is "1".
- Enter the name of the second currency in the field A2 (for example Rupiah).
- Enter the rate in the column B2.
Step 5. Enter the name of the home currency in column D1
For example, if you want to convert US dollars to Indonesian rupiah, enter USD on column D1.
Step 6. Enter the currency value in column D
For example, if you want to convert 10 dollar values to rupiah, enter each value on the line D2 until D11.
Step 7. Enter the name of the destination currency in column E1
For example, if you want to convert US dollars to Indonesian rupiah, enter IDR on column E1.
Step 8. Click column E2, then enter the formula
=$B$2*D2
and press Enter.
After entering the formula, you will see the conversion result in the column E2, right next to the original currency value.
Step 9. Apply the formula to the entire second currency column
Click cell E2, then double-click on the small green square in the lower-right corner of the cell. Excel will convert the currency according to the conversion value you entered, and the result of the conversion will appear in the second currency column.
Method 2 of 2: Using Kutools for Excel
Step 1. Visit the Kutools download page at
Kutools is only available for Windows computers.
Step 2. Click the Free Download Now link in the middle of the page, then click the button Save or select a download location if prompted.
Kutools will be downloaded to your computer.
Step 3. Double click the brown box icon to start the Kutools installation process
Step 4. Click the box in the installation window to select a language, then click OK
Step 5. Follow these steps to complete the Kutools installation process:
- Click Next.
- Click Accept twice, then click Next.
- Click Next twice.
- Click Install.
Step 6. Click the green icon with a white X to open Microsoft Excel
Step 7. Click the Blank workbook option in the upper left corner of the Excel window
Step 8. Enter the initial currency value in column A
For example, if you have 20 dollar values that you want to enter, enter each value into the cell A1 until A20.
Step 9. Select all cells containing currency values by clicking on the first cell and dragging the cursor to the last cell
Step 10. Copy the data
Click the Home tab, then select Copy in the Clipboard section on the left of the toolbar to copy the data.
Step 11. Paste the data into column B
Select cell B1, then click the clipboard-shaped Paste button in the left corner of the toolbar Home.
Make sure you click the clipboard icon, instead of the arrow below it
Step 12. Select the data in column B
Just click the column head B to select all the data in it.
Step 13. Click the Kutools tab near the top of the Excel window
Step 14. Click the Currency Conversion button in the Ranges & Content option
It's in the toolbar at the top of the page.
Step 15. Click the Update rate button in the top left corner of the page Currency Conversion to update exchange rate data.
Make sure your computer is connected to the internet before performing this step
Step 16. Select the source currency in the window on the left of the Currency Conversion page
For example, if you want to convert dollars to rupiah, choose Dollars.
Step 17. Select the destination currency in the window to the right of the Currency Conversion page
For example, if you want to convert dollars to rupiah, choose Rupiah.
Step 18. Click OK
Excel will convert the currency values in the column B to the value of your destination currency.
