Squirrels are persistent and clever animals. While cute, squirrels can damage property and discourage birds from coming to the bird feeder in your yard. In addition, these animals can eat your plants. Make the yard an unattractive place and protect the plants from squirrels. In addition, you can take steps to protect your bird feeder and housing from squirrels.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Making Pages Less Attractive
Step 1. Prevent squirrel arrivals by spraying the yard with a squirrel repellent
These products can be purchased freely, and usually contain predator urine. When it smells urine, the squirrel will notice it and move away from the yard to avoid being eaten by predators. Spray this product around the perimeter of the page to prevent squirrels from getting inside.
You can buy this product at a farm shop or the internet
Step 2. Spread human, cat, or dog hair around the garden
Squirrels do not like the smell of this hair because animals that have it are considered a threat. Spread some soil over the hair to prevent it from flying.
Maybe you should spread your hair again once a year or so
Step 3. Plant flowers that squirrels don't like around garden boundaries
Try growing flowers like marigolds and nasturtiums as squirrels don't like their scent. You can also plant a mustard tree to ward off squirrels.
- Use this flower as a barrier because the squirrels won't want to cross it.
- Squirrels also don't like the smell of mint.
Step 4. Apply hot sauce on redwood furniture placed outdoors to prevent squirrels from eating it
Redwood furniture can attract squirrels because they love the wood. Use a washcloth to rub hot sauce on the furniture legs. When a squirrel bites it, it will taste a taste it doesn't like and then leave.
Step 5. Try placing your cat or dog outside
Dogs in the yard will prevent squirrels from frequenting the yard. Of course, don't keep your dog out all the time. Only let the dog out in the yard every now and then to ward off squirrel arrivals.
Having a dog or cat outside also makes the squirrel think twice about entering the yard
Step 6. Remove the squirrel's favorite food that is scattered in the yard so that the animal does not come looking for it
If you have seed trees, nuts, or berry bushes, sweep up fallen seeds. This is a bit difficult to do continuously, but the squirrels are less likely to come to the yard because there is no food available.
Step 7. Wrap a sheet of metal around the tree to prevent squirrels from getting to it
Use metal scissors to cut thin sheet metal. Make sure it is large enough to cover the trunk of a tree about 90 cm long. Wrap the sheet around a tree trunk about 2 meters high from the ground.
- Tie the sheet metal with wire. Wrap the wire around the metal spring on one side and tie the ends of the wire so they don't slip out of the spring. Wrap the wire around the metal sheet attached to the tree trunk and tie the other end of the wire tightly to the other side of the spring on the sheet metal. Twist the wire by joining the two ends so that it is tightly wrapped around the spring. You may need to attach more than one wire.
- The spring will give the tree space to grow.
Method 2 of 4: Protecting Plants from Squirrels
Step 1. Water the soil when you plant the bulbs so the squirrels don't dig them up
Squirrels are attracted to changing soil conditions because they think other animals have nuts in them. Water the soil thoroughly so that it returns to its original shape, and does not attract squirrels.
You can also attach the wire mesh to the ground and place rocks on top of it as ballast. You can take it if it rains heavily. Another option is to protect the bulbs by placing a black plastic net over them in the same way
Step 2. Sprinkle chili powder around the garden to ward off squirrels
This is a great option for preventing squirrel infestation on your favorite plants. Squirrels don't like spicy seasoning and will avoid them. Sprinkle chili powder on the leaves of plants that squirrels don't want to damage.
- Even so, birds will still eat it.
- You have to sprinkle it back after it rains.
Step 3. Place mulch around the plants that the squirrels don't want to damage
Squirrels do not like to stick their feet in mulch. Therefore, when you apply mulch, the squirrels are less likely to approach the area of the garden that you want to protect.
You can also place mulch around newly planted bulbs as long as you give the bulbs some space to grow
Step 4. Put a net over the plants to prevent them from being eaten by squirrels
The net will prevent the squirrels from getting into the plant. This is perfect for crops like eggplant and tomatoes that squirrels love so much. It can also be used on berry plants.
Cover the plants with a net and place rocks around the edges of the net as ballast
Method 3 of 4: Protecting Bird Feed Containers
Step 1. Choose a feed container that the squirrels cannot reach
If you are feeding small birds, choose a feed container that has small bars around it. The hole is big enough for birds to pass, but not for squirrels.
Another option is to install a dome-shaped squirrel repellent at the bottom of the feed container. The shape is curved downward so that the squirrel will find it difficult to climb up the post of the bird feeder. You can also mount it above the bird feeder if the pole is hanging from above
Step 2. Hang the bird feeder on a wire between two trees or posts so the squirrels can't reach it
Tie a few spools of empty yarn or a few pieces of paralon pipe on both sides of the bird bait container. If a squirrel crawls into the bait container, the spool or pipe will spin, causing the squirrel to fall. Use a small, slippery wire or thread. Fishing line is perfect for this purpose.
Remove branches that are near the bird feeder, as they can be used by squirrels to jump. Squirrels can jump 2.5 to 3 meters horizontally
Step 3. Place the slinky (spiral toy like a spring) on the post so the squirrel can't climb it
Attach the slinky to the top of the post. When the squirrel tries to climb up the pole, it grabs the slinky. The slinky will slide down, causing the squirrel to fall back to the ground.
However, some squirrels can outsmart this trick
Step 4. Rub the pole with butter or petrolatum (petroleum jelly) so the squirrels can't climb it
Squirrels often don't even want to climb a sticky pole. However, if the squirrel keeps climbing on it, it will slip and fall.
Step 5. Sprinkle chili powder on bird feed because squirrels don't like it
Sprinkle chili flakes or powder on the bird feed, and make sure all the grains are coated. Birds can't feel the heat of chili peppers because they don't have a sense of taste. However, squirrels can feel it and they don't like it.
- Maybe the squirrel will get into the feed container, but the animal will soon find out that it doesn't taste good.
- You can also choose safflower seeds for bird feed instead of regular bird feed. These seeds do not like squirrels.
Method 4 of 4: Preventing Squirrels from Entering Your House
Step 1. Seal all holes in the attic to prevent squirrels from entering
Keeping your house and attic in good condition will prevent squirrels from entering your home. Check the attic for holes in it. The best time to do this is during the day so you can see the sunlight coming in. Use nails to attach the wire mesh to the holes so the squirrels can't get in.
If you don't want to do it yourself, ask a handyman to do it
Step 2. Purchase a fireplace chimney cover to block squirrels' access to the house
Squirrels can get into the house by going down the chimney! If you experience this, cover the chimney to fix it. The chimney will be closed so the squirrels cannot enter.
The chimney cover has a section made of wire mesh so that the smoke can still escape
Step 3. Trim tree branches hanging near the house to prevent squirrels from jumping onto the roof
If there are branches that touch the roof or are very close to the house, cut them at a minimum distance of 2 meters from the house. Also trim the branches hanging from the roof of the house because the squirrels can use it as a way to get into the house.
Squirrels will try to get into the house if there is a branch that can be used to do so. Once on the roof, the squirrel will find a way to get into the house. And, in no time your house will be invaded by hordes of squirrels
Step 4. Set a live trap if a squirrel gets into the attic
Place the trap in the attic by installing something the squirrels like, such as dried fruit or nuts. If the trap is full, seal the hole in the attic before you release the squirrel outdoors.
If there are still squirrels in the attic when all the holes are closed, you will smell an unpleasant odor
Step 5. Call a wildlife expert to help you get rid of the squirrel
If the squirrel attack is out of control, we recommend that you ask for help. They can trap squirrels and help you find and seal holes in your home. This way, the squirrels will not come back to your house.
