This wikiHow teaches you how to create a link to a new file, folder, web page, or document in Microsoft Excel. You can link to Microsoft Excel, both Windows and Mac versions.

Method 1 of 4: Linking Text to a New File
Step 1. Open the Excel document
Double-click the document to which you want to add a link.
You can also open a new document by double-clicking the Excel icon and selecting “ Blank Workbook ”.
Step 2. Select the box
Click the box to which you want to add a link.
Step 3. Click Insert
This tab is on the green ribbon at the top of the Excel window. Once clicked, the toolbar will appear just below the ribbon.
If you are using a Mac computer, keep in mind that the " Insert "different from menu" Insert ” displayed on the computer's menu bar.
Step 4. Click Hyperlinks
This option is on the right side of the toolbar " Insert ” in the "Links" section. After that, a new window will open.
Step 5. Click Create New Document
This tab is on the left side of the pop-up window.
Step 6. Enter the link text
Type the text you want to display in the "Text to display" field.
If you do not enter different text, the name of the new document will be used as the link text
Step 7. Type in the name of the new document
Enter a name in the "Name of new document" field.
Step 8. Click OK
It's at the bottom of the window. By default, a new spreadsheet document will be created and opened, and a link to that worksheet will be added to the box you previously selected in the first document.
You can also select the “Edit the new document later” option before clicking “ OK ” to create a spreadsheet and its link, without opening it.
Method 2 of 4: Linking Text to an Existing File or Webpage
Step 1. Open the Excel document
Double-click the document to which you want to add a link.
You can also open a new document by double-clicking the Excel icon and selecting “ Blank Workbook ”.
Step 2. Select the box
Click the box to which you want to add a link.
Step 3. Click Insert
This tab is on the green ribbon at the top of the Excel window. Once clicked, the toolbar will appear just below the ribbon.
If you are using a Mac computer, keep in mind that the " Insert "different from menu" Insert ” displayed on the computer's menu bar.
Step 4. Click Hyperlinks
This option is on the right side of the toolbar " Insert ” in the "Links" section. After that, a new window will open.
Step 5. Click Existing File or Web Page
It's on the left side of the window.
Step 6. Enter the link text
Type the text you want to display in the "Text to display" field.
If you do not enter any other text, the link text will be displayed as the directory/folder address to the destination content
Step 7. Select the destination content
Click one of the following tabs:
- ” Current Folder ” – Find files in the folder “ Documents " or " Desktop ”.
- ” Browsed Pages ” – Browse recently visited web pages.
- ” Recent Files ” – Browse for the most recently opened Excel files.
Step 8. Select a file or web page
Click the file, folder, or web page that you want to link to. The directory/folder address will be displayed in the " Address " field at the bottom of the window.
You can also copy the URL from the internet and paste it in the "Address" field
Step 9. Click OK
It's at the bottom of the page. After that, a link will be created in the box you selected.
Keep in mind that if you move the linked file, the link will no longer work
Method 3 of 4: Linking Text to Data in a Document
Step 1. Open the Excel document
Double-click the document to which you want to add a link.
You can also open a new document by double-clicking the Excel icon and selecting “ Blank Workbook ”.
Step 2. Select the box
Click the box to which you want to add a link.
Step 3. Click Insert
This tab is on the green ribbon at the top of the Excel window. Once clicked, the toolbar will appear just below the ribbon.
If you are using a Mac computer, keep in mind that the " Insert "different from menu" Insert ” displayed on the computer's menu bar.
Step 4. Click Hyperlinks
This option is on the right side of the toolbar " Insert ” in the "Links" section. After that, a new window will open.
Step 5. Click Place in This Document
It's on the left side of the window.
Step 6. Enter the link text
Type the text you want to display in the "Text to display" field.
If not entered, the link text will be displayed as the name of the linked box
Step 7. Click OK
A link will be created in the selected box. If you click on the link, Excel will automatically check the linked box.
Method 4 of 4: Creating Email Address Links
Step 1. Open the Excel document
Double-click the document to which you want to add a link.
You can also open a new document by double-clicking the Excel icon and selecting “ Blank Workbook ”.
Step 2. Select the box
Click the box to which you want to add a link.
Step 3. Click Insert
This tab is on the green ribbon at the top of the Excel window. Once clicked, the toolbar will appear just below the ribbon.

Step 4. Click Hyperlinks

Step 5. Click E-mail Address
It's on the left side of the window.
Step 6. Enter the link text
Type the text you want to display in the "Text to display" field.
If not changed or entered, the text of the link will appear as the email address to which you will link
Step 7. Enter your email address
Type the address you want to connect to in the " E-mail address " field.
You can also add the desired email subject in the " Subject " field. This means that the link will display a new email window with the subject field already filled in
Step 8. Click OK
It's at the bottom of the window.
