In recent decades, short hairstyles have become very popular, especially bob hair. Many women cut their hair in a variety of bob styles, ranging from waist-length to shoulder-length. If you were previously used to long hair, you might feel a little confused about how to manage your short hair. There are several popular easy ways to style a bob that are suitable for any hair type.
Step
Method 1 of 5: Styling a Bob with a Round Brush
Step 1. Moisturize your hair, or leave it wet after you shower
This method is one way to style a bob, and it starts with wet hair. Spray your hair with water if your hair is dry, or let it wet after you shower before styling it.
Step 2. Apply a styling product such as mousse or hair gel that is not too stiff to your hair
These styling products can help hold your hair in place after you style your hair and blow dry it.
Pour a small amount of styling product into the palm of your hand. Rub both palms and then apply to hair
Step 3. Pin or tie the top two thirds of your hair
You'll be styling your hair section by section, so hold on to any unswept hair with bobby pins or rubber bands.
Part hair horizontally above the ears. Place your thumbs on either side of your head above your ears and move them to part your hair. Lift all the hair that is above your thumb and pin or tie this section of hair. Let the rest of the hair down
Step 4. Place some loose hair onto a round brush
Take a section of loose hair about 5 centimeters wide and place it on a round brush.
Pull the brush along the length of your hair and twist the brush slightly as you pull it to untangle the tangles
Step 5. Hold the hair dryer close to the roots of the hair above this round brush and point the tool towards the ends of the hair
The blow dryer should always point towards the hair at the bottom, as pointing it up can make the hair untidy.
Step 6. Dry the hair with a hairdryer while pulling it with a round brush
Every now and then, rotate the brush as you pull it to the ends of the hair so that the hair bends inward. Since your haircut is in a bob, chances are your hair isn't that long. You may not even have to pull the round brush at all, but in most cases, you should pull the brush slightly.
- Keep turning the round brush gently to make the hair bend inwards. You need a quick flick of your wrist to direct the brush back toward the roots when it reaches the ends of your hair.
- Dry one section of hair thoroughly before blow-drying the other. If you dry another section of hair before one section is completely dry, this section of hair will lose its shape.
Step 7. Continue blow-drying with a round brush until all the loose hair is dry
By blow-drying your hair in 5-centimeter sections, there may be 3-4 sections of hair that you will need to dry with a round brush and a blow dryer.
When you're done, the lower sections of the hair form a cute curve towards the neck and chin and this makes a great foundation for the rest of the hair that hasn't been dried
Step 8. Part your hair and pin or tie the top third of your hair
Now you are getting ready to blow dry your middle layer of hair to match the shape of the lower layer of hair you just dried.
Place your thumb on the hairline with a point roughly parallel to the arch of the eyebrow. Pull both thumbs toward the center of the head until they meet. Pin or tie a third of this section of hair to the top of your head
Step 9. Separate the hair into sections 5 centimeters wide and dry each section using a round brush
Just like you did with the bottom layer of hair, now you style the middle layer of hair with a round brush.
- Remember to place a round brush and blow dryer at the roots of your hair. Point the blow dryer at the ends of the hair.
- Remember to keep turning the round brush as you dry your hair. This middle layer is longer than the bottom layer, so you have to keep pulling the brush all the way to the ends of your hair and starting again at the roots.
Step 10. Dry the entire middle layer of this hair thoroughly
The ends of the hair that bend inward should fall just above the ends of the bottom layer of hair that bend down as well.
For the section of hair that is on the side of the head, make more hair bend inward, slightly towards the chin
Step 11. Remove this third section of hair and make a parting
You can part your hair in the middle or on the sides. With a comb, make a parting of the hair as desired. Then let your hair down.
Step 12. Repeat again blow-drying hair divided into 5-centimeter-wide sections with a round brush
Gently lift this 5cm wide section of hair and place it on a round brush and then dry it.
- Point the blow dryer at the ends of your hair, and dry your hair starting at the roots, so you don't tangle your hair.
- Keep turning the round brush under your hair so that the ends are slightly bent. This layer of hair is the longest layer of hair, so you'll need to pull your hair all the way down and then start again at the roots until the sections are completely dry.
Step 13. Dry the entire top layer of hair on the sides of the head
Make sure that one section of your hair is dry before starting to dry the other section with a round brush. Again, this layer of hair should be on the middle layer of hair, and make the ends of the hair bend inward just like the layer below.
Step 14. Finish with hairspray
If you're afraid the mousse or hair gel you've previously applied won't hold your hair in place, you can spray a little hairspray to make sure your hairdo lasts a long time.
Method 2 of 5: Straightening Bob
Step 1. Plug in the flat iron and turn it on to heat it up
You can heat it up however you want, but it's usually between 180 and 190 degrees.
Wait for the appliance to heat up while performing the following preparatory steps
Step 2. Make sure your hair is dry
You shouldn't straighten your hair when it's wet because it won't straighten when it's dry. If your hair is not dry yet, use a blow dryer to dry it thoroughly.
Step 3. Apply a heat protectant and/or styling product
Many hair experts recommend applying heat-protective products to the hair before styling it with heat-using tools, such as a hair straightener. Many of these products are simply sprayed onto the hair.
You can also apply mousse or gel that is safe for use on dry hair if you prefer. This will help your hair stay straight for a longer time
Step 4. Pin or tie two thirds of the hair
You straighten your hair one layer at a time, so use bobby pins or a hair band to secure another layer of hair.
Part hair horizontally above the ears. Place your thumbs on either side of your head, just above your ears, and move them toward the center of your head to part the hair. Lift all the hair that is above your thumb and pin or tie this section of hair. Let the rest of the hair down
Step 5. Take a section of hair 2.5 centimeters wide
Smooth the hair and make sure there are no tangles of hair to allow the straightener to move smoothly.
Remember to spritz a heat protectant on your hair, maybe you can apply a section at a time to make sure the entire hair is exposed to the product
Step 6. Clip the flat iron to the section of hair at the roots and gently pull it to the ends
You have to pull it smoothly and in one motion, without stopping. If you stop somewhere before you reach the ends, there is a kind of wave in the hair and it will be difficult to get rid of it.
- Do not clamp the hair with this tool too tightly because it can damage or burn the hair strands.
- You only need to do this once, but if your hair isn't as straight as you want it to be, you can do it one more time on that section.
Step 7. Continue to straighten the 2.5 cm wide sections of hair that are in the lower layer of hair with a flat iron
Continue to straighten the entire undercoat until you're satisfied. Remember to spray on hair protection products from heat as necessary.
Step 8. Pin or tie a third of the hair
You'll need to pin or tie a third of your hair to straighten the middle layer of your hair.
Place your thumbs on either side of your head at a point parallel to the arch of your brow. Move both thumbs toward the center until they meet. Pin or tie a third of this section of hair above your head
Step 9. Straighten sections of hair 2.5 centimeters wide in this middle layer of hair
As before, divide the hair into sections and straighten them with a flat iron.
- Spray hair protection products from heat as necessary.
- Smooth out hair and remove tangles before you straighten them with a flat iron.
- Do this all over the hair and check to see if anything is missed or not to make sure all these layers of hair are straightened.
Step 10. Remove a third of the hair that was pinned or tied
Remove the bobby pin or hair tie. Part hair as desired with a comb, either in the middle or on the sides.
Comb hair gently to remove tangles and help your hair tidy
Step 11. Divide the top layer of hair into sections and straighten each section
Using the same method as before, straighten the hair with a flat iron on this top layer of hair.
Check for missing sections of hair to make sure all hair is straightened
Step 12. Finish with hairspray if desired
If you want your hair to last longer, you can spray it with hairspray to keep the hairdo last longer.
Method 3 of 5: Curl Hair with Sticks or Curlers
Step 1. Plug in the curling wand and turn it on to heat it up
Set the temperature of the appliance as desired, making sure it is not too hot to prevent hair or skin burns.
Let the wand warm up while you go through the following steps to prep your hair
Step 2. Make sure your hair is dry
If your hair is not dry, use a blow dryer to dry it thoroughly. Your hair won't curl if it's still wet.
Some salon therapists claim that curls can last longer if your hair is dirty, so it's best not to wash your hair for a day or two in advance
Step 3. Apply styling product to hair
Choose a mousse or gel that is safe to use on dry hair to help hold your curls in place. Look for products designed specifically for curly hair.
Step 4. Secure the top two-thirds of the hair with bobby pins or a tie
The easiest way to curl your hair is to style it layer by layer so that even missing sections are easy to find.
Part hair horizontally, just above the ears. Place your thumbs on either side of your head just above your ears and move them in the middle to part the hair. Lift all the hair above your thumb and pin or tie it. Remove the rest of your hair
Step 5. Separate the hair into sections 2.5 centimeters wide
Smooth the hair and make sure there are no tangles so that the hair becomes curly nicely..
You can apply heat protection products to your hair by dividing your hair into sections first. This product will protect your hair from the damage that the curling wand can cause
Step 6. Wrap a section of hair onto this curling wand
Be careful not to get your finger on the stick as it can burn the skin.
- If you wrap the hair in the sticks tighter, the curls become tight too. On the other hand, if you don't wrap it too tightly, the curls will become looser.
- If you are using a curling iron, clip it to a point not too close to the roots of your hair and hold it for 10-15 seconds before releasing it.
- If you are using a curling wand, hold the end of the section of hair not too far from the wand to prevent burning your hands and hold the wand for 10-15 seconds before removing it from your hair.
Step 7. Continue to curl some small sections of hair in the lower layer of hair
Make sure you check to see if anything is missing or not making a nice curl before starting to curl another layer of hair.
Step 8. Hold the top third of hair by pinning or tying it
One-third of your hair should be kept away so as not to disturb you when curling the middle layer of hair.
Place your thumb on the hairline at a point parallel to the arch of the eyebrow. Move your thumbs toward the center until they meet. Tie or pin a third of the hair on top of the head
Step 9. Curl 2.5-centimeter-wide sections of hair in this middle layer of hair
Just as before, divide your hair into small sections and then make them into curls with a flat iron or curling wand.
- Spray hair protection products from heat as necessary.
- Smooth the hair and make sure there are no tangles before curling it with a curling iron.
- Curl all the hair in this layer, and check to see if anything is missed or not to make sure it's all curled. It's important to see if any sections of your hair are still straight because not much hair can cover this layer.
Step 10. Remove a third of the hair that is pinned or tied
Part hair as desired with a comb, either in the middle or on the sides.
Gently brush your hair with your fingers to remove tangles and help your hair stay limp
Step 11. Separate the hair into small sections in this top hair layer and make each section into a curl
Using the same method, curl the sections of this top layer of hair into curls.
Check to see if you missed a section of hair to make sure all of your hair is curled. Again, try to be careful when looking for it. Maybe you can ask someone else for help to find out if any part is missing or not
Step 12. Finish with a hairpsray spray
Hairspray helps hold the hairdo so that the curls that have formed can last longer. Spray your hair with hairspray to hold the curls in place.
Method 4 of 5: Make Bob Hair Curls Naturally
Step 1. Wash or dampen hair
It's easy to make bob hair into natural curls when your hair is wet. You can style it right after you shower or moisturize it.
You can spray your hair with a water bottle to moisturize it, or you can wet it
Step 2. Choose a styling product that is designed to hold the curls in place
There are many products available that are specifically designed for curly hair. Choose one that suits your hair type (thick, thin, fine, damaged, and so on).
Mousse or gel are also great for styling hair like this. You can use hairspray to spray at the end
Step 3. Bend at the waist and turn your head
Styling your hair upside down can add volume to your hair.
You can skip this step if you feel your hair has enough natural volume
Step 4. Put a small amount of styling product in the palm of your hand
Rub the palm of the hand so that the product is evenly distributed to both hands.
Don't apply too much at first because you can add more if you feel you need it
Step 5. Apply the product to the hair by squeezing the hair
It's a good idea to apply it to a small section of hair and gently push the hair towards the scalp gently and knead the hair with your hands as you do so.
Make sure you apply this product all over your hair. We tend to forget the bottom layer of hair but if this layer of hair is not styled, it will show. Squeeze all layers of hair with this product
Step 6. Stand up straight and return your head to the starting position
You can apply more of the product if you want and apply on the missed areas. Use a mirror to help you find any missing hairs.
Step 7. Let the hair dry
Often this is enough for naturally curly hair. However, there are some additional steps you can take if you wish.
- You can attach the diffuser to a hairdryer and dry your hair with it. This makes hair voluminous and curls more noticeable.
- Spray hairspray on the hair to hold the curls. But using hairspray can make hair look "crunchy" and hard, instead of smooth. So the use of this product is up to you.
Method 5 of 5: Adding Beach-style Curls to Bob's Hair
Step 1. Take a product to define the texture of the hair
There are many products specifically designed to achieve this hair look. A popular product is sea salt spray, but there are other products as well.
If you don't have a product like this, make sure you buy one first
Step 2. Start with naturally dry or slightly damp hair
There are different opinions about the best way to get hair like this: styling it when it's completely dry or when it's slightly damp. You have to find the method that works best for your hair.
You can read the instructions on this product as well to find out what works best
Step 3. Spray hair with a spray to add texture to the hair
Make sure you spray it all over your hair. You can turn your head to make sure the product also hits the bottom of your hair.
Step 4. Squeeze your hair
For some people, the method of squeezing hair is a great way to get a beach-style wavy look.
- Gather a small amount of hair in the palm of your hand and gently push it up toward your scalp. Slowly and gently, squeeze the hair and push.
- This method can work better and add more volume to the hair if you turn your head to squeeze the hair.
Step 5. Add curls to the hair with a curling wand
If this method of squeezing doesn't work on your hair, you can add a little wave to your hair with a curling wand after spraying this texture-enhancing product.
- Loosely wrap a 2.5 cm section of hair in this wand, don't loop it more than 2-3 times as you may end up curling your hair instead of curly or wavy.
- Make sure you keep your fingers away from the curling wand while holding the ends of your hair so you don't burn your fingers.
Step 6. Finish with another spray of texture-enhancing product
Once you've kneaded or curled, gently comb your hair with your fingers to get loose waves. Then, spray on a texture-enhancing product to hold this wavy hairdo.
