This wikiHow teaches you how to record music playing on Spotify using Audacity. Audacity is a free audio recording and editing program available for Windows and Mac computers.
Step
Step 1. Open Audacity
Double click the Audacity icon to launch it. The Audacity icon looks like a yellow sound wave with blue headphones. If you don't have Audacity installed on your computer:
- On a Windows computer: Visit https://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows and click the link “ Audacity X. X. X Installer ” at the top of the page (X. X. X is the latest version available). Double-click the installation file to install Audacity to your computer.
- On Mac computers: Visit https://www.audacityteam.org/download/mac and click the link “ Audacity X. X. X.dmg ” at the top of the page (X. X. X is the latest version available). Double-click the.dmg file and follow the Audacity installation instructions.
Step 2. Select the audio host
Click the drop-down box to the left of the microphone icon and select:
- Windows: “Windows WASAPI”
- Mac: “Core Audio”
Step 3. Select a recording device
Click the drop-down box to the right of the microphone icon and select a speaker (or whatever device you're using). Select the loudspeaker or audio output that is normally used to play computer audio. To find out the audio output currently in use:

Windows: Click button
in the lower-right corner of the workbar or taskbar.

Mac: Click icon
in the top right corner of the menu bar.
Step 4. Select stereo recording (stereo recording)
Click the next drop-down box to the left of the speaker icon and select “ 2 (Stereo) Recording Channels This option is the second option in the drop-down menu.
Step 5. Select the audio playback device
Click the drop-down box to the right of the speaker icon and select the audio output used for listening to music. Usually you need to select the same output as the recording device. With this option, you can listen to what is being recorded.
Step 6. Click the record button
It's a red circle button at the top of the Audacity program window. All audio played by the computer will be recorded immediately.
Step 7. Press the play button on the Spotify program
Switch to the Spotify window and press the play button or click the song you want to record to play it. While the song is playing, you can see the sound waves in the Audacity program's timeline while the program records music from Spotify.
Step 8. Click the stop button after you finish recording
It's a black square button at the top of the Audacity window.
Step 9. Save the recording
When you're done recording music, you can export the recording to save it on your computer:
- Click the menu " File ”.
- Choose " Export ”.
- Click " Export as MP3 ”.
- Type in the song file name.
- Select a storage location.
- Click " Save ”.
