Spotify is one of the world's favorite media for playing and storing music. One of its features is its status as a social media platform that allows its users to browse music through other users. By learning how to use this feature, you can enjoy a more Spotify experience, and even make new friends with similar musical tastes.
Step
Part 1 of 5: Getting and Unlocking Spotify
Step 1. Visit the Spotify website
Step 2. Click the “Sign Up” button at the top right corner of the page
You will be taken to the registration page and asked to fill in the account creation details.
Step 3. Select "Sign Up" after entering the account details
It's at the bottom of the page.
Step 4. Confirm that you are logged in to your account
After creating a Spotify account, you will be taken back to the Spotify main page and you can see that the “Log In” link in the top right corner of the page now displays your Spotify account username. At this point, you're ready to use Spotify!
Step 5. Open the Spotify app
If you can't find this app:
- On the smartphone, go to the home screen and touch the Spotify app icon.
- On a Mac, click the Spotlight icon (magnifying glass) in the upper-right corner of the screen, type "Spotify", and click “Spotify” in the search results.
- On a Windows computer, click the "Start" button in the lower-left corner of the screen, type "Spotify" into the search bar, and click "Spotify" in the search results.
Part 2 of 5: Following Certain Users
Step 1. Find out the username of the person you want to follow
The username on Spotify is different from the user's full name. Therefore, when looking for a friend's profile, contact him or her to ask for their username so you don't have to guess at the numbers or symbols that might be in their username.
Step 2. Touch/click the search bar
This bar is in the top half of the screen, and is labeled in white.
On the Spotify mobile app, tap the three horizontal lines icon in the upper-left corner of the screen to display a menu containing the search function. Touch " Search " to activate the function
Step 3. Type "spotify:user:
"[username]" in the search bar.
Replace “[username]” with the username of someone you want to follow.
This step applies when you want to search for Spotify users, and not artists/musicians
Step 4. Touch/click the “Enter” button
After entering the proper Spotify username, you will be able to view the profile page.
Step 5. Touch the “Follow” button
This button is below the person's username.
Step 6. Return to the “Activity” feed page
Now, you can see live music updates from users you follow (eg music they listen to, like, or save). To return to the activity feed page:
- On the Spotify desktop app, tap the "Activity" button on the left sidebar of the screen.
- On the Spotify mobile app, tap the three horizontal lines icon in the upper-left corner of the screen to display the menu bar. After that, touch "Activity".
Part 3 of 5: Following Facebook Friends
Step 1. Touch "Find Friends"
Look for this option in the upper-right corner of the application window.
Step 2. Connect your Spotify account to your Facebook profile
If you didn't create a Spotify account through your Facebook account, click the " Connect to Facebook " button and enter your login information to see a list of friends on Facebook who also use Spotify.
Step 3. Follow friends from Facebook
Click on the names of friends with music updates that you will follow and see.
Part 4 of 5: Following Artists/Musicians
Step 1. Touch/click the search bar
This bar is halfway across the screen and is labeled white.
On the Spotify mobile app, tap the three horizontal lines icon in the upper-left corner of the screen to display a menu containing the search function. Touch " Search " to activate the function
Step 2. Type in the name of the musician you want to follow
You can see the corresponding search results in the drop-down menu below the bar.
Step 3. Touch or click the artist/musicians that match the search
You will be taken to the artist's Spotify page.
Step 4. Touch or click "Follow"
Now, you can see updates from the artist in the feed or music stream segment whenever he or she releases a new song on Spotify.
Part 5 of 5: Using the “Discover” Function
Step 1. Touch or click "Browse" from Spotify's main window
- In the Spotify desktop app, it's in the sidebar in the left half of the window.
- On the Spotify mobile app, tap the three horizontal lines icon in the upper-left corner of the screen to display these options.
Step 2. Touch or click "Discover"
You'll be taken to a directory of playlists, albums, and artists suggested by Spotify based on the music you've listened to or saved.
Step 3. Follow the artist you are interested in from the directory
Touch or click the song, album, or playlist you want to listen to. After that, touch the name of the artist (or user, for a playlist) to access their profile page. Click or tap the " Follow " button to add updates about his latest music, as well as the music he listens to and likes to a segment of your activity feed.
