You've probably come across a file with the extension 7z and having trouble opening it. A 7z file, or 7-Zip, is a compressed archive containing one or more files. To extract files from a 7-zip archive, you'll need to install a special app, which is generally free to download (even for iOS and Android). Learn how to open 7z files with iZip on your phone, 7-Zip or WinZip on a Windows computer, and The Unarchiver on an OS X computer.

Method 1 of 4: iZip for Phone
Step 1. Find iZip in App Store or Play Store
A 7z file, or 7-Zip, is a compressed archive containing one or more files. To extract files from a 7-zip archive, you will need to install a special application. iZip is the recommended application for opening 7-Zip files because it is free to download.
Step 2. Tap "Get" or "Install"
The application will be downloaded and installed on the device.
Step 3. Tap the iZip icon to open the app
Step 4. Tap "Local Files" to find the 7z files
If the 7z file is stored in cloud storage, select “iCloud Drive” or “Google Drive”.
Step 5. Hold down the filename 7z until you see a box with the caption “Would you like to unzip all files? ”
Step 6. Tap "OK"
The contents of the 7z file will be extracted to a folder with the same name.
Once the progress bar is gone, you can open the extracted file by tapping it from iZip, or open the folder containing the file
Method 2 of 4: 7-Zip for Windows
Step 1. Visit the 7-Zip site
Since 7z files are compressed files, you cannot view their contents until they are extracted with a special program. 7-Zip can extract the contents of 7z files, and is a free download for Windows users.
Another popular program for extracting 7z files is WinZip, which is also available in a trial version. If you can't use 7-Zip, try using WinZip
Step 2. Click "Download" next to the link for your version of Windows (32-bit or 64-bit)
If you don't know your Windows version, press Win+S to open a search window, then enter the keyword “system”. Click “System” in the search results, then check the “System Type” entry
Step 3. Select a save location (eg Desktop), then click "Save"
Step 4. Double-click the 7-Zip installation.exe file, then click "Run"
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the 7-Zip installation.
After the installation is complete, click "Finish"
Step 5. Double-click the 7z file that you want to open
The contents of the 7z file will appear in the 7-zip program window.
Step 6. Press Ctrl+A to select all files in the archive, then click “Extract”
Step 7. Click the " button
.. to select the location to save the extracted file.
- By default, the file will be extracted in a new folder in the folder where the archive is stored. The folder has the same name as the 7z file.
- For example, if the file you want to extract is named "DangdutKoplo.7z" and is on the desktop, the new folder will have the name "DangdutKoplo".
Step 8. Click "OK" to extract the files to a folder
You will see a progress bar while the extract is running. Once the file is extracted, the bar will disappear, and you can double-click the folder to access the extracted file.
Method 3 of 4: WinZip for Windows
Step 1. Double-click the 7z file
A 7z file is a compressed archive containing one or more files. The compression will cause the file to have a smaller size. To access the files in the archive, you must first extract the archive. Some Windows users already have the WinZip program, which can also be used to extract 7z files.
- If the 7z file doesn't open after double clicking it, follow these steps to download a trial version of WinZip.
- You might want to try 7-Zip, a free program for extracting 7z files.
Step 2. Visit
WinZip is offered for $29.95, but can be tried for free for 30 days.
Step 3. Click “Download Now,” then save the installation file in the downloads folder
Step 4. Double click the installation file, then click "Run"
The program will be installed on the computer.
Step 5. Double-click the 7z file
The contents of the 7z file will appear in the WinZip window.
Step 6. Press Ctrl+A to select all files and folders in the 7z archive
Step 7. Click the “1-click Unzip” button
Step 8. Select “Unzip to PC or Cloud”, then select the destination folder
By default, the file will be extracted in a new folder in the folder where the archive is stored. The folder has the same name as the 7z file.
Step 9. Click "Unzip" to extract the contents of the 7z file into a folder
Now you can access the compressed files in the 7z archive.
Method 4 of 4: Unarchiver for Mac OS X
Step 1. Open the App Store on your Mac
To access the files in the 7z archive, you'll need to find an application that can extract them. The Unarchiver is one of the most popular Mac apps for extracting files, and it can be downloaded and installed from the App Store.
Step 2. Enter "Unarchiver" in the search field at the top of the App Store window
After that, click the program that appears in the search results.
Step 3. Click “Get,” then “Install App”
Step 4. Follow the on-screen steps to install The Unarchiver on your computer
Step 5. Open The Unarchiver after the installation is complete
A list of file associations will appear on the screen.
Step 6. Select “7-Zip Archive” from the list to allow The Unarchiver to recognize and open 7z files
Step 7. Go to the “Extraction” tab
Step 8. Select the “Ask for a destination folder” option from the drop-down menu to select a file extract location
Step 9. Double-click the 7z file you want to open
You will be asked to select a folder to extract the files from.
Step 10. Select a folder to save the contents of the 7z file, then click "Extract"
The Unarchiver will extract the files and copy them to a folder of your choice. Once the progress bar is complete, you will be able to access the file.
Tips
- The 7z file size may be smaller before extracting, which is normal. Compression of files in 7z format is generally done so that users can transfer files with small sizes.
- Most programs that can extract 7z files can also be used to create 7z files.
