This wikiHow teaches you how to install the free VLC Media Player on your computer or smartphone. VLC is available for Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone.
Step
Method 1 of 4: On Windows Computer
Step 1. Visit the VLC site
Use a web browser on your computer to visit
Step 2. Click Download VLC
It's an orange button to the right of the page.
Step 3. Choose where to save the download when prompted
Doing so will download the VLC setup file to your computer.
The VLC file will be downloaded automatically. So, skip this step if you are not prompted to choose a location to save the download
Step 4. Double-click the newly downloaded VLC setup file
The file is in the default download location for the browser you are using.
Step 5. Click Yes when prompted
Doing so will open the installation window.
Step 6. Select the language
When prompted, click the language drop-down box, then specify the language you want to use in VLC. Continue the process by clicking OK.
Step 7. Click Next three times
The installation page will open.
Step 8. Click Install at the bottom of the page
Doing so will install VLC Media Player on your computer.
Step 9. Run VLC
Once the installation is almost complete, you can start VLC right away by checking the " Run VLC media player " box and clicking Finish.
If you want to open VLC later, double-click the VLC icon on the desktop, or select the application from the Start menu
Method 2 of 4: On Mac Computer
Step 1. Visit the VLC site
Use a web browser on a computer to visit
Step 2. Click Download VLC
It's an orange button to the right of the page.
Step 3. Choose where to save the download when prompted
Doing so will download the VLC setup file to your computer.
The VLC file will be downloaded automatically. So, skip this step if you are not asked to choose a location to save the download
Step 4. Open the DMG file you downloaded
Open the folder used to save the downloaded file, then double-click the VLC DMG file. The installation window will open.
Step 5. Click and drag the VLC icon to the "Applications" folder
The "Applications" folder is on the right side of the window and the cone-shaped VLC icon is on the left. Doing so will install VLC on your computer.
Step 6. Run VLC
The first time you run VLC after you've installed it, do the following:
- Double-click the VLC icon in the Applications folder.
- Wait for the Mac to verify VLC.
- Click Open when requested.
Method 3 of 4: On iPhone
Step 1. Open the App Store
on iPhone.
Tap the App Store icon, which is a white "A" on a light blue background.
Step 2. Touch Search
It's in the lower-right corner.
Step 3. Touch the search field
It's a gray text box that says "App Store". You can find it at the top of the page.
Step 4. Look for VLC
Type in vlc, then touch the button Search blue button at the bottom right of the keyboard.
Step 5. Look for the "VLC for Mobile" heading
Scroll down until you find this heading next to the VLC icon which looks like an orange traffic cone.
Step 6. Touch GET
It's to the right of the "VLC for Mobile" heading.

If you've ever downloaded VLC, touch
located to the right of the heading.
Step 7. Enter your Apple ID or Touch ID password when prompted
Doing so will start to install VLC on your iPhone.
Once downloaded, you can immediately run VLC by touching OPEN on the App Store.
Method 4 of 4: On Android Device
Step 1. Open Google Play Store
on Android devices.
Tap the Google Play Store icon, which is a colorful triangle on a white background.
Step 2. Tap the search field at the top of the screen
This will bring up the keyboard on the Android screen.
Step 3. Visit the VLC page
Type vlc, then touch VLC for Android in the drop-down menu that appears.
Step 4. Touch INSTALL located on the right side of the page
Doing so will start installing VLC on your Android device.
- When prompted, touch ALLOW after you touch INSTALL to confirm the download.
- You can directly open VLC from within the Google Play Store by touching OPEN when VLC is finished installing.
