Chert (flint/grit) and steel are the basic ingredients you need to make a fire in Minecraft. The recipe is simple, but you really need to know the basics for gathering chert and smelting iron. Before using this tool, first learn about how to safely use fire in the forest. Otherwise, your house could be destroyed by forest fires.

Part 1 of 3: Collecting Chert and Iron Rods
Step 1. Find the gravel
Pebbles are light gray blocks that will fall if there are no objects underneath. Large quantities of gravel can be found underwater, on beaches, and on country roads. If you're not near any of these places, just dig underground or caves until you find them.
Step 2. Crush the pebbles until you get chert
When crushed, about 1 in 10 gravel blocks will produce a piece of chert, not gravel. You can dig gravel more quickly with a shovel, and according to some players, this can increase your chances of finding chert.
You will need one cobblestone and two sticks, as well as a crafting table. In the computer edition, place these materials in a vertical column with the stone on top
Step 3. Mine iron
You don't have to dig too deep to find it because iron is often underground. Iron has a stone-like appearance that has beige flecks. Use a stone pickaxe or better tool to mine it.
Step 4. Melt the iron in the furnace
You must separate iron from rock in order to use iron ore. Here's how to do it:
- Make a kiln of eight cobblestones using the crafting table. (Fill in all boxes except the middle box if you are using the computer edition.)
- Use the furnace to open the smelting interface.
- Place the iron ore in the top slot.
- Place wood, coal, or other flammable objects in the fuel slot at the bottom. (It will be destroyed.)
- Wait for the smelting to complete.
- Get the iron ingot from the crafted slot on the right.
Part 2 of 3: Making Chert and Steel
Step 1. Create Chert and Steel on the computer
If you're using a computer or console to play Minecraft with advanced crafting enabled, place iron rods and pieces of chert anywhere in the crafting box. Drag the chert and steel from the crafted box to your inventory.
If you're playing Minecraft 1.7.1 or earlier, place the chert exactly one square below and one square to the right of the ingot
Step 2. Create Chert and Steel on console or Pocket Edition
On devices with only a simple crafting system, select the Chert and Steel recipe from the crafting screen. Maybe you need a craft table.
- In Minecraft Pocket Edition, you can only get chert and armor in version 0.4.0 and later. You can only start a fire in version 0.7.0 and up.
- Chert and steel can be found in all versions of the console.
Part 3 of 3: Using Chert and Steel
Step 1. Protect yourself from fire
Before you start a fire, learn how to put out a fire so it doesn't burn your home:
- The fire can spread to any empty block on a flammable surface. The furthest the fire can reach is one square down, one box to the side, or four squares up.
- The spread of fire cannot be stopped by providing a solid barrier.
- Fire can be extinguished with water.
Step 2. Turn on the fire
Place the chert and steel in one of the quick slots and take your pick. Now you can use this thing just like you would with a pickaxe or any other tool. You can start a fire by using this object on a flammable object (such as grass or wood). You will only get a short flame if you use it on a non-combustible object (such as a rock). Here are some ways to use api:
- Temporary lighting when you run out of torches
- Clear the forest to make big building projects
- Shine on the enemy to fire - indeed they are flammable too! The creeper will explode, and almost all the other mobs will be slowly destroyed.
Step 3. Blow up the TNT
You can use TNT to guard temples in the desert, or you can make your own TNT by placing gunpowder and sand in the crafting area. Ignite the TNT with chert and steel, and you have about four seconds to run before the TNT explodes. If you want to have more time to run, light a flammable block near the TNT and let the flame spread to ignite the TNT indirectly.
Tips
- Chert and steel are excellent when combined with netherrack. You can create an eternal flame by right-clicking netherrack. However, be careful not to step on it! To keep the fire from spreading everywhere, you can also build a fireplace using chert and steel plus netherrack and other non-combustible blocks.
- Some multiplayer servers prohibit the use of chert and steel to prevent players from setting fire to objects. If the above recipe doesn't work, try recreating it in the single player world.
Warning
- There is a bug that can sometimes make TNT disappear instead of exploding. This can happen if you overuse it, or if you right-click on chert and steel with TNT.
- Don't bring chert and steel if you don't want to use them. Many houses are on fire because the player right clicks to open the door which ends up setting the house on fire.
- You can get burned if you walk on fire. You can take damage if you are on a burning block, then die within eight seconds (four lives in the shape of a heart) after you leave the fire. You can use water to put out the fire.
