This article is a basic overview of how to get Epona in Legend of Zelda 64: Ocarina of Time. This article is not a guide to playing the game, and does not include the steps between being a child at Lon Lon Ranch and becoming an adult. Getting Epona will be so profitable that it's worth getting from Ingo. Read this article to see how to get it.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Reach Lon Lon Ranch and Get Epona
Step 1. Locate Lon Lon Ranch
After you meet Zelda in the palace and are escorted by the Impa, you are standing right in front of the suspension bridge. Instead of heading for Death Mountain as Impa told you to, look straight ahead where you are standing. You should see a group of houses on top of a hill. That place is Lon Lon Ranch.
Step 2. Enter Lon Lon Ranch
This is where Talon (the man you wake up in the palace to pave the way) and his son live. When you first enter, walk straight between the two buildings and you'll be on a ranch, with some sort of circular track for horseback riding.
Step 3. Learn the Epona Song
Enter the field where the horses are running and you will see a little girl standing in the middle and singing. He would thank him for waking his father, and tell him about the song he had sung. Take out the okarina and learn “Epona Song”
Step 4. Exit Lon Lon Ranch and head to Death Valley
Play the next two dungeons according to the story to the end. After that, go to the Temple of Time to become an adult.
Step 5. Return to Lon Lon Ranch after becoming an adult
You will notice that the place has become gloomy. Now the farm has been taken over by Ingo. who had pledged allegiance to Ganondorf. You will see the farm has been used as a horse racing arena. Pay Ingo to enter, and choose any horse to ride. You can't do this on the first try, so don't try. After a while, you will be kicked out.
Step 6. Pay back to log in, then get your ocarina out, and play an Epona song
Epona will walk towards you. Ride on Epona then go to the arena entrance where Ingo is standing. When riding a horse, do 'Z-target' to Ingo then press 'A' button to talk. He will challenge you to a horse race and bet 50 rupees. Accept the terms of the bet.
-
Practice riding the Epona first. Just move the joystick in the direction you want to go.
-
Press the 'A' button to give Epona carrots to increase speed. Epona gets faster, but your carrots will decrease. Use carrots only if needed.
Method 2 of 2: Challenging Ingo with Epona
Step 1. Drive the Epona into the track
Ingo will block your path to get inside, but to no avail. When he gives up in the deep position, press the 'A' button to increase speed and pass Ingo in the inner lane.
Step 2. After winning the race, Ingo will be shocked to death and will challenge you once again
She would blush and scream about Ganondorf. Then, he will challenge you to a second race. If you win, you will get Epona.
Step 3. Use the same trick as before
Ingo will be faster in this race, and will be more difficult than the first race. Keep trying and do your best.
-
Don't give up and stay in the deep track position. Thus, Ingo will have difficulty passing you when in the outer lane position. Stay in track position in the race track and you will win.
-
Don't overdo it with carrots for Epona at the start of the race. While some people can beat Ingo without using carrots, it's a good idea to save your carrots early in the race. Don't use too many at the start or the carrots will run out when you need them most at the end of the race.
Step 4. After you finally defeat Ingo, he will be furious
Ingo says you can have the horse, but you can't leave the farm. He would close the door and laugh like an idiot. Seems like a dead end doesn't it? But you are wrong!
Step 5. Find a way to jump over the farm fence
Ingo locks the gate leading into Lon Lon's cage, and you have two choices.
-
The hard way: Run straight to Ingo and jump over the gate. This method has to be done perfectly or you'll just run into Ingo.
-
The easy way: On the left side of the farm is a wall. Run from the gate entrance to the wall, at the right angle. The angles don't have to be perfect as Epona can jump them anyhow.
Step 6. After landing behind a wall, enjoy the freedom and speed of riding the Epona
Now you can enjoy all the benefits of riding a horse. The big part is that you can cross the world in only about thirty seconds, instead of three minutes without Epona.
-
Epona is not an important part of the game. You don't really need her, but Epona will really help you. Therefore, try to get Epona if you can.
Tips
- Use enough carrots early in the race to overtake Ingo. If you block his run, Ingo can't get past you.
- DON'T eat all your carrots at once
- Get closer to the corners of the fence as often as possible.
- Press the 'A' button right when the race starts, as Ingo did, This can put you ahead of Ingo. Press the 'A' button when Ingo is about to pass you.
- When you see the finish line, keep pressing 'A' as fast as you can.
- NEVER Z-TARGET ON INGOs.
- Try to stay in front of Ingo and block him while you wait for the carrots to fill up again (this makes the race easy, I won the race with just one try).
- DO NOT run towards Ingo, or you will stop altogether.
- If you're using a kid's bag, fill it up to 99. If you lose the race, there are three pots in the second floor house for playing a game of chickens. Each contains exactly 50 if you lose the race.
- In the second race, Ingo will be in front at the start of the race.
- Don't be discouraged if this process takes a few tries. Keep trying.
- DO NOT crash into the fence or you will slow down.
