The PlayStation 2 (PS2) console can play DVDs produced in your region/country without special equipment. You can control DVD playback using a PS2 stick or a PS2 DVD controller. If you cannot play movies due to the applicable parental control settings, you can disable the settings by entering a special passcode.
Step
Part 1 of 2: Playing Movies
Step 1. Connect the console to the television
If your PS2 isn't already connected to your television, you'll need to connect it first. Usually, you can connect your PS2 to your television using a stereo A/V (RCA) cable.
- One RCA cable is included in every PS2 purchase package.
- Match the colored end of the cable to the color of the slot or input hole on the back or side of the television.
Step 2. Use the television controller to switch to the appropriate input channel
Use the “INPUT” or “VIDEO” buttons on the television to select the input channel that the PS2 is connected to.
The slot or input port that is connected to the PS2 on the television usually has a label. Use the label to quickly switch to the right input channel
Step 3. Connect the PS2 stick to the console
You'll need a stick to control DVD playback or access parental control settings. However, the stick itself is not required to start playback. If the DVD has menus, you can't go through those menus without the stick.
If you have a PS2 DVD controller, you can use it instead of a stick. Older PS2 models require an adapter in order for you to use the PS2 DVD controller
Step 4. Open the PS2 disc cross-section
The cross-section may pop out of the console or the top cover may open, depending on the PS2 model you have.
On the original PS2 model, the “Eject” button is in the lower-right corner of the front panel, below the “Reset” button. If you're using a slim PS2, the “Eject” button is to the left of the PlayStation logo, above the USB port
Step 5. Insert the DVD and close the cross-section
Place the DVD in the tray and press the “Eject” button again or attach the cover cover.
Step 6. Press the “Reset” button on the PS2
The console will restart and the DVD will load. After a while, the DVD will play automatically.
Step 7. Enter the parental control passcode when prompted
You may be asked to enter a four-digit passcode to start the movie, depending on the console's parental control settings. If you have never entered a passcode before, you will be asked to create a code first.
- Use “0000”, “1111”, or “1234” if you cannot remember the required passcode.
- If you still can't get past parental controls, read the next segment for more instructions.
Step 8. Control playback and menus using a stick or controller
You can perform all standard playback controls using a PS2 stick:
- Press the “X” button on the stick or controller to select something, or the “O” button to deselect.
- Press the “Start” button to pause the movie playback, and the “O” button to stop the movie.
- Press the “R1” button to move to the next segment (chapter), and “L1” to return to the previous segment.
- Hold down the “R2” button to advance playback, and “L2” to go back to the previous scene.
Step 9. Press the “Select” button to display the DVD playback menu
A transparent menu will be displayed in front of the currently playing movie. There are several options to choose from, such as returning to the DVD menu or switching to another segment.
Part 2 of 2: Disabling Parental Controls
Step 1. Start the movie so that the parental control passcode page is displayed
Follow the steps in the previous method until you are prompted for a parental control passcode.
Step 2. Press “Select” when prompted to enter the code
The "Enter Password" menu will change to "Delete Password".
Step 3. Enter “7444” as a code
When you enter the code, the original parental control passcode will be deleted.
Step 4. Create a new, simpler passcode temporarily
You will be asked to register a new code ("Register Password") after deleting the old code. Enter an easy-to-remember code (eg “0000”) for now. After that, you can permanently disable your passcode in a few steps.
You need to enter the code twice to confirm it
Step 5. Let the movie play and skip the DVD menu
After creating a new passcode, the movie will start playing immediately. Skip the warning message and select "Play" from the DVD menu.
Step 6. Stop the movie once it starts playing
When you see the movie studio logo and the movie starts playing, press the “O” button to stop playback.
Step 7. Select “Select” to access the menu after the movie is stopped
Open the menu when you see the message " Press [PLAY] to resume viewing ".
Step 8. Select the toolbox icon to open the “Setup” menu
This button is directly above the “Pause” button and below the “7” button in the menu.
Step 9. Press the right button on the directional pad twice to open the "Custom Setup" tab
This menu allows you to change parental control settings.
Step 10. Select "Parental Control" and enter the passcode that was created
You will be asked to enter a passcode before you can access the menu.
This menu can only be selected if you have stopped movie playback
Step 11. Select the “Level” option
With this option, you can change the level of parental control.
Step 12. Swipe the screen over the list and select “Off”
The parental control feature will be permanently disabled and you will no longer be prompted to enter a code when playing a movie.
Step 13. Open the disc tray and eject the DVD
Press the “Eject” button and eject the DVD from the cross-section. The disc may still rotate for a few seconds after the cross-sectional cover is opened on slim PS2 models.
Step 14. Close the cross section and press the “Reset” button
The PS2 will restart and the parental control settings will be saved.
Step 15. Reopen the PS2 disc tray and mount the DVD
Once the PS2 has finished resetting and you are in the main menu, open the cross-section and reassemble the DVD.
Step 16. Press the “Reset” button after inserting the DVD
The PS2 will reset and the movie will start playing automatically. You will not be asked to enter a parental control passcode.
