Your phone is cool when it works, but on the go your expensive BlackBerry can become an expensive paperback if it's not unlocked to accept local carriers. You can get an "unlock" code from the operator or third party seller if your contract with the operator has not been completed. Follow this guide to learn how to unlock a BlackBerry.

Part 1 of 2: Get Unlock Code
Step 1. Find your BlackBerry IMEI number
This unique identifier is required by the operator or service provider to find your unlock code. To get the IMEI number, follow the steps appropriate for your device:
- BlackBerry 10 – Go to Settings > Advanced. Tap Hardware from the menu that appears. Your IMEI number will be displayed in the window.
- BlackBerry 6 and 7 – Click Options > Device > Device and Status Information to find the IMEI number.
- BlackBerry 5 and earlier – Click Options > Status. Your IMEI will be displayed.
Step 2. Contact your carrier
Your operator will usually unlock your BlackBerry for free after your contract is over. This means that you cannot receive the code unless your contractual obligations have been fulfilled and your phone has been fully paid for.
Step 3. Contact a third-party unlock service
If you need to unlock your phone and the operator doesn't provide the code, you will have to purchase an unlock code from a third party service.
- Make sure you read the reviews of these third-party services to ensure that they are honest.
- You must provide your IMEI number when you ask for the unlock code.
- You may need to wait 3 days before receiving the code, but usually the code is received within a few hours
Part 2 of 2: Unlocking BlackBerry
Step 1. Unlock the BlackBerry 10 device
Go to the Settings menu, select Security and Privacy, and SIM Card. Swipe down and tap on the Unlock Phone button. Enter your code and tap OK.
You can try entering the code 10 times before your phone is blocked
Step 2. Unlock the BlackBerry 7 device
First, turn off all network connections. You can view your connections by opening Manage Connections. Make sure Wi-fi and cellular networks are turned off.
- Open the SIM Card menu by opening the Options menu > Device > Advanced System Settings > SIM Card.
- Type "MEPD" in the SIM Card menu. A new menu will appear when you finish typing, and Network should appear to be Active. BlackBerry 71xx, 81xx, and 91xx users must type MEPPD.
- Type "MEP[ALT]2". If nothing happens, try typing "MEP[ALT]4". You need to press alt=""Image" to allow you to enter numbers. BlackBerry 71xx, 81xx, and 91xx users must type MEPP[ALT]2 or MEPP[ALT]4.</li" />
- Enter your unlock code. You can try up to 255 times, so don't enter it wrong! After you unlock, you can insert your new SIM card and reactivate the network connection.
Step 3. Unlock your BlackBerry 6 and earlier devices
Remove your SIM card by removing the battery and removing the SIM card from its holder. Insert the SIM card for the new network. When the BlackBerry is turned on, you will be asked to enter the unlock code.
