Today, there is a desire within us to know everything about someone who is trying to contact us. At the same time, we are becoming increasingly suspicious of people who try to contact us without revealing their identities. Caller identification, a feature that has only become widely available on phones in the last 15 or 20 years, has become something we take for granted. Despite this desire, there is still a way to anonymously call people to whom we do not wish to reveal our identity. Here are some steps you can take to make anonymous calls.

Step 1. Decide whether you want to call from a landline or a cell phone
Step 2. Wait for the dial tone if you are using a landline (assuming you are not using a rotary phone)
When you hear the tone, press "*67" before making a call. You will hear a dual dial tone to let you know that you are now restricting your phone by not revealing your identity to the recipient.

Before entering the entire number into your cell phone, make sure you enter the "1" before the area code (some companies don't require you to press the 1 after the "67". So if it doesn't work with the "1" try without the "1"), a step that's easy to forget because it's usually not needed when calling from a cell phone. Instead of your mobile number that will appear on the user ID of the recipient's phone, the word "Limited" will appear instead.

Step 4. Find out if your phone has an option to hide the number on the phone of the recipient of your call

All phones are different, but some offer the option to hide your number as the default setting for calls. Check with your phone service provider if you are not sure how to apply these settings to your phone.

Step 5. Make sure, if at all possible, that the individual you wish to contact is not implementing a feature named "Reject anonymous callers"
While not available on mobile phones, this feature is available on landlines through telephone providers.

If you try to call anonymously to a number that implements this feature, a recorded message will sound reminding you that the person addressed does not receive anonymous calls. To contact this person, you will need to call again without hiding your phone number if this is an option.

While this can be a powerful tool to work with, it can also block desired calls from callers who normally hide their numbers, such as doctors' clinics, police officers, offices, or other individuals who have legitimate reasons to keep their numbers hidden.
