Although scratches on the LCD cannot be repaired, sometimes you can still repair the screen that is covering it. If the LCD screen of your phone, computer, or television is scratched, the repair process will vary because the types of scratches on the LCD also vary, from barely noticeable to very annoying. If the screen is only slightly scratched, you can repair it yourself with a professional scratch repair kit. However, if the scratches are large enough to interfere with the LCD display, you will need a new screen cover. It should be noted that the LCD screen is not a touch screen.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Using a Professional Scratch Repair Tool
Step 1. Assess the damage to the screen
This repair kit works effectively for scratches on the LCD surface, but deep crevices or nicks in the plastic cannot be repaired with this tool.
Step 2. Purchase a professional scratch repair kit if the scratch is light
You can try the quality "Displex Display Polish" and "Novus Plastic Polish" brands that you can buy on Amazon. Maybe you can also find this device at Ace Hardware.
Step 3. Purchase a microfiber cloth if the device is not provided
A microfiber cloth differs from a regular paper towel or washcloth in that it will not scratch the screen during the wiping process.
Step 4. Turn off the TV/mobile/computer power
Scratches are easier to see if the screen is dark.
Step 5. Unbox your repair kit and read the user guide
Usually, you'll need to spray the solution onto the scratch and the area around it, then wipe it off with a microfiber cloth.
Step 6. Spray a small amount of the solution onto the scratch
The solution should cover the scratches on the screen well.
Step 7. Use a microfiber cloth and gently wipe the solution on the scratches
Do this until the screen looks dry.
It's a good idea to wipe the cloth in circular motions rather than simply up and down or sideways. Thus, the solution goes well into the scratches
Step 8. See the result
If it looks like the scratch is gone, your repair is done!
Method 2 of 2: Buying a New LCD Screen Protector
Step 1. Assess LCD screen damage
If the screen is scratched to such an extent that it interferes with viewing, but the LCD itself is not damaged, we recommend purchasing a new screen cover. If the LCD is damaged (some parts are black or rainbow colored), it looks like the screen is beyond repair and you need to buy a new television/cellphone/computer.
Step 2. Find the model number of your television/computer/phone
You can usually find the model number on the back of your television or cell phone, or on the bottom of your laptop. You need this number to make sure that the screen type purchased is not the wrong one.
Make sure you also have the manufacturer's name (eg Sony or Toshiba)
Step 3. Open a search engine in your browser
Step 4. Type in the manufacturer's name, model number, and "screen replacement"
Expensive screens are not necessarily the best quality, so look at the search results carefully before deciding which replacement screen to buy.
For a more focused search, try visiting Amazon or eBay and doing the same search
Step 5. Contact the technology department in your city to check prices
Maybe you're better off buying a new device if the total cost of the new screen and installation service is close to or equal to the new device.
Step 6. Buy a new screen if it is more cost effective
Step 7. Bring your screen in for a professional install
Most technology departments (eg at Electronic Solutions) will replace the device screen for you, even if the cost is quite high. This is the reason to buy a mid-priced screen instead of an expensive one.
It is not recommended to replace the screen yourself
Step 8. Purchase a screen protector if a new screen is installed
By now, your screen should be safe from scratches!
Tips
- If the screen is small enough to repair, it's best to leave it alone. Scratches will only make it stand out more if you try to fix it.
- Use a screen protector to keep the screen scratch free at a low cost.
Warning
- Do not attempt to repair scratches yourself without using a professional scratch repair kit. You should never use Vaseline, nail polish, toothpaste, or any other “easy way” as they will damage the screen
- While there are many tutorials on replacing your own screen on YouTube and the internet, there is a risk that the LCD screen will be permanently damaged if you do so.
