Students who don't pass exams are often dubbed "the slacker" or "the daydreamer." If you haven't done well in school or have learning difficulties, don't call yourself "stupid" or that your teacher isn't good at teaching. This may happen because of several things that make it difficult for you to study.
To increase the effectiveness of learning, find fun ways to do as a routine while studying, for example: listening, taking notes, and using a schedule. In this way, you will be able to maximize your learning potential.
Step
Step 1. Find out the most appropriate learning style for you
In general, we learn by seeing, doing, and hearing. Think of something you still remember well while taking lessons. Do you study while doing activities? Does the teacher explain the essay in detail? Were you given a sheet of course material? You can study effectively if you already know the most appropriate way to study. However, many students achieve better learning outcomes by combining several learning styles. Take an internet test to determine the most appropriate learning style for you.
Step 2. Get learning outcomes by doing activities
Learning on the move makes it easier for you to memorize lessons. Apart from that, you can get several other benefits.
- You have to concentrate on experimenting in class.
- Try to take notes as best you can, even if you don't have to do it during class. An open mind makes it easier for you to understand information.
- In addition to taking notes, record the teacher's explanation using a small tape recorder so you can focus on listening. Use the recordings as notes. While this may take more time, you will benefit from a technique psychologists call the "dual-coding hypothesis" because learning is easier when you do it two different ways (in this example, you learn by listening and writing).
Step 3. Free yourself from distractions during the lesson
Don't let your phone, music, or chatty friends distract you. Find the most appropriate seat because class is a place to concentrate, not to chat with friends. Keep valuables in your bag or place them far enough away that they won't distract you.
Step 4. Establish a good relationship with the teacher
You will have a hard time at school if you hate the teacher. Show that you are a polite student, respect the teacher, and study hard so that he or she feels appreciated so that lessons are more enjoyable.
Step 5. Set learning targets that are easy to achieve
For example: make it a habit to take notes on the material being explained. After one week, write an essay based on the material you studied. Before learning a new topic, write down a few questions about the topic. After the lesson, find out how many questions were answered. Each time you reach your goal, give yourself a small gift, for example: buying a CD or shirt, hanging out with friends, or taking your free time to rest.
Step 6. Do various fun ways so that you can enjoy the learning process
Try to motivate yourself by:
- Look for interesting things related to the topic being studied and focus on understanding the topic as best you can. The greater the interest in learning, the more you will learn.
- Invite classmates to study together. Prepare a small test or quiz and use it to test each other, discuss material that is not understood, discuss interesting information, or take notes together. Friends can increase motivation to learn.
Step 7. Take time to summarize the material just explained in class using a small notebook
Write 1-2 sentences to read again so that it is easier for you to memorize the material you just taught.
Step 8. Ask for help if you're having trouble
Many students are reluctant to ask others for help. Keep in mind that almost all teachers are willing to help if you have difficulty learning or want to understand the material being taught. Take advantage of the available study rooms at the school or directly meet the teacher. Don't be shy to ask.
Tips
- If you have difficulty understanding the material being taught, ask the teacher, parent, or friend who has mastered the concept. Don't be shy or insecure because learning is very important so every problem must be addressed immediately.
- Make an effort to make more observations in and out of class while hearing and remembering details. Think of learning as another way to hone your observation skills.
- Set up attractive prizes to motivate yourself, for example: buying expensive items or having fun if you manage to get a significant increase in your score or achieve an A+.
- Benefit as best as possible if the school offers scholarships or other assistance.
Warning
- A bad relationship with a teacher tends to cause problems in giving grades or he is not as tolerant as when you forget to do your homework or are late for school. Even though it rarely happens, don't be a face-seeking student. Remember that teachers also have personal feelings and sentiments. So try to maintain a good relationship with the teacher.
- If your grades or study performance are very low, spend plenty of time working on it with determination and do your best. Believe that you are able to achieve the best learning outcomes.
