Permanent resident status, which is often referred to as "green card ownership" is not valid for life. A green card should be updated regularly, similar to a SIM. The normal period for renewing a green card is every 10 years. Read this article to learn how to renew a green card if you are a permanent resident living in the United States and your card's 10 year validity is almost over.

Part 1 of 2: Preparing Documents
Step 1. Extend six months before the green card expires
It is difficult to gauge how long the renewal process will take. It is possible that the renewal process is protracted and may take months. This doesn't happen often, but you should take precautions.
You must also renew a green card that is lost or stolen (if stolen, contact emergency department), damaged, changed information, or the card holder is 14 years old, or you have taken commuter status
Step 2. Fill out the USCIS I-90 form
This form is available on the United States Immigration and Citizenship service website. Alternatively, you can apply in writing. The form must be completely filled in for USCIS to begin the process.
- Form I-90 can be filed electronically (fees can be paid together) or sent using the postal service. If you would like to receive it by mail, call the order form at 1-800-870-3676.
- You may or may not qualify for a digital file (aka e-file). See their website for more information.
Step 3. Submit the renewal fee
Currently, the fee is $450.00 and is subject to change. This fee covers $85 for biometrics, which is the need for fingerprinting, taking photos, and taking electronic signatures. This must be done online with your digital file or included with your form when submitted. They accept American Express, Mastercard, Visa and Discover cards.

- Pay fees by personal check or money order or in cash at a US bank in US dollars and destined for the U. S. Department of Homeland Security. Do not use the initials DHS or USDHS or USCIS when writing checks. Do not send cash or travelers checks.

- Once payment is received, you will receive a receipt. This receipt includes an address for you to send supporting documents to. In addition, if a biometric service is required, they will notify you of the scheduled appointment time and place.
Part 2 of 2: After Submission
Step 1. Wait for notification of acceptance from USCIS
This notification will come in the form of an email (if you applied online) or a letter. Keep this as proof you started the application process.
USCIS will send you Form I-797C, or Notice of Action. This is a notification that should be used as proof that you have applied. Again, this is a notification listing the information needed for your next appointment
Step 2. Come to your biometric schedule
Bring a schedule letter and some photo identification cards. The biometric schedule consists of fingerprinting and taking a photo for a green card. You don't have to worry unless you have a new and increasing criminal record.
If you need documentary evidence while USCIS is reviewing your status, say when you arrive. They will stamp your passport to show that you have applied for a new card. This allows you to exit and re-enter the United States
Step 3. Review the list sent to you by the United States Immigration Service and collect all your documents
Again, wait for notification from the United States Immigration Service regarding further schedules. If not, the next step is to receive your card.
You may be required to take an interview at a regional location. If not, however, you will receive your new green card in the mail
Tips
- If you wish to become a citizen of the United States, see the requirements for applying for citizenship. Once you become a US citizen, you don't have to bother with renewing your green card. Once your citizenship application is on file with USCIS, you may still carry an expired green card with you.
- You can change your address online.
- Check all your documents to avoid problems and distractions during the application process.
Warning
- There is a possibility that you will have to start the application process again when your green card has expired. This includes paying all applicable fees.
- This process is different for conditional citizens who have a 2 year card. You must delete the status within 90 days from the card expiration date. This process can also be done online.
