White Russian is a classic and creamy cocktail made of vodka, coffee-flavoured liquor and cream. Usually, this drink is served in an Old-Fashioned glass that has been filled with ice. You can make a classic version of the White Russian drink or try mixing it with other ingredients. For example, add Baileys instead of coffee-flavoured spirits for a stronger drink with a different taste. Besides being easy to make, White Russian can also be a delicious drink to serve as a closing cocktail.
Ingredients
- 60 ml vodka
- 30 ml of coffee flavored alcoholic drink
- Thick whipped cream
- Ice
Step
Part 1 of 3: Mixing Alcoholic Drinks
Step 1. Fill the glass with ice
Use a highball glass or something like that. Fill the glass with ice until it reaches the rim of the glass. It's a good idea to use ice cubes (from the mold) instead of shaved/mashed ice because the ice cubes don't melt quickly so the drink doesn't get runny.
Step 2. Add 60 ml of vodka
Pour the vodka into a glass and measure using a shot glass. 60 ml is approximately equivalent to one and a half shot.
Step 3. Add 30 ml of coffee flavored liquor
After adding the vodka, reuse the shot glass to add 30 ml of coffee-flavored liquor (eg Kahlua). The dose is roughly equivalent to half a shot glass.
Part 2 of 3: Making the Cream Layer
Step 1. Place the spoon on top of the glass
It's a good idea to use a bar spoon. If you don't have one, you can still use a regular spoon. Place the spoon on top of the glass, with the bottom of the spoon facing up.
Step 2. Pour the cream over the spoon
Prepare the cream and slowly pour it over the bottom of the spoon. You just need to add enough cream to form a thin layer of cream on top of the glass. Slowly pour in the cream to keep the cream separate from the rest of the ingredients.
Step 3. Stir the drink (optional)
Some people like to mix all the ingredients needed to make a White Russian. However, if you want to keep each layer separate, you can serve it without stirring it first.
Part 3 of 3: Adding Variations
Step 1. Replace cream with a low-calorie cream option
If you want to make a lighter version of White Russian, you don't need to use heavy cream. Instead, you can use a half-and-half mixture (milk and cream in equal proportions) or skim milk.
Step 2. Use Baileys instead of cream
Instead of using cream, add a little Baileys Irish Cream to the top of the glass. This variation is known as Blind Russian and gives the drink a stronger taste, as well as a slightly bitter taste.
Be careful when enjoying Blind Russian as this drink is made entirely of liquor and will taste very strong
Step 3. Add rum instead of vodka
If you prefer a sweet drink, substitute vodka for rum. You can make this version of the drink in the same way. Just add 60 ml of rum instead of 60 ml of vodka. This version of the drink is known as the White Cuban.
Step 4. Add chocolate flavoring
If you want to enjoy the taste of chocolate in your drink, try replacing coffee-flavored spirits with chocolate-flavored spirits. You can also use chocolate milk instead of cream as the top layer of the drink.
