Most prescription drugs are packaged in childproof containers. To open it, it takes dexterity and arm strength. While this pack is safe from the reach of children so they don't get poisoned by drugs, it's quite difficult to open if you're losing dexterity and arm strength due to injury or arthritis, for example.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Properly Opening the Container
Step 1. Place the container on a flat surface
This way you can grip the container tightly.
Step 2. Check the label to determine the type of childproof container
There are several types:
- Press and turn it down – the cover has an arrow pointing down or the words “Push”.
- Squeeze the sides and twist – there are grooves around the lid for easy squeezing and twisting.
- Push the label down and rotate – the cover has a raised label and says “Push” and an arrow indicating the direction of rotation.
- Straighten the arrow – the lid has an arrow pointing down and on the lip of the container is an arrow pointing up.
Step 3. Try opening the container
Since the childproof case has a special locking mechanism, it requires proper movement to open it. If you're not agile enough to open the lid without an additional method, just skip this step.
- Press and turn down – press the cover down and push until it rotates and opens.
- Squeeze the sides and twist – use the grooves around the cover for a firm grip, then squeeze and twist the cover at the same time until it opens.
- Press the label down and rotate it – use your palm to press the label down and rotate the cover until it opens.
- Straighten the arrow – rotate the lid until the arrow on the cover is in line with the arrow on the lip of the container. After that, remove the lid from the container.
Method 2 of 4: Using Table Edge
Step 1. Find a table with wide edges
This edge will act as a lever for turning the lid of the container.
Step 2. Hold the container so that the base rests against the top edge of the table
In essence, you will be placing the edge of the table between the top and bottom of the container cover.
Step 3. Pull the container in a rapid downward motion against the edge of the table
The cover will click and release when moved down against the edge of the table.
Another trick, try placing a cover under the edge of the table or kitchen counter. Hold the container firmly in one hand, apply pressure and twist until the lid clicks and releases
Method 3 of 4: Using a Flat Surface
Step 1. Rotate the container on a flat surface
Use a kitchen table or counter.
Step 2. Press the palm of your dominant hand down against the bottom of the inverted container
Apply light pressure at the base.
Step 3. Rotate the container while keeping the lid from moving with friction
If possible, hold the cover with your non-dominant hand so it doesn't move.
Step 4. Stop rotation when the cover clicks or releases
Then, hold the lid and the container with your dominant hand, and twist them together.
Now you should be able to lift the lid or open the medicine container
Method 4 of 4: Use a Bottle Opener
Step 1. Purchase a bottle opener at a hardware store or online
Look for one that is made of rubber and has non-slip grooves for a firm grip.
- The Dycem bottle opener is designed for people with limited arm movement. This opener is used with just your fingers or palm and light pressure to open the container.
- If you have to, you can also use a small rubber mat. Your grip will be tighter with this mat.
Step 2. Place the bottle opener on the lid of the container
Hold the bottle with the other hand, if possible.
If there is excess rubber mat, place it under the bottle so that it stands firm and does not need to be held
Step 3. Use your fingers or palm to turn the bottle opener
A firm grip will twist the container properly and open it.
