The Cheshire Cat is a unique character from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. You can make a Cheshire Cat costume using a number of tools. This costume is perfect for a party, or an Alice in Wonderland themed event with friends.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Gathering Equipment to Make a Costume
Step 1. Consider a color scheme
The Cheshire Cat from the 1951 cartoon has a striped appearance in purple and pink colors. In the latest film version, this cat is patterned with stripes in teal (turquoise) and purple colors. Consider the color schemes that are most accessible and desirable.
When choosing a color scheme, try to use almost all of the available colors
Step 2. Get a striped shirt
Visit a flea, clothing, or online store to get the color you want. You must keep the color scheme in mind during the creation of the Cheshire Cat costume.
A costume shop may have what you need. This shop often sells a variety of items with the same color scheme
Step 3. Prepare leggings or striped tights
The goal is to find pants with a similar pattern and scheme. If you go to a costume shop, try to find a uniform top and bottom. You can also try searching on the internet.
If you can't find anything, wear black skinny trousers or leggings/tights. The main feature of this costume is from the waist up so you can mimic the Cheshire Cat look without matching bottoms
Step 4. Use onesuit
You can order a custom onesuit or onesie from online stores or select retailers. You can also look for onesuits that are designed to look like Cheshire Cat costumes. Try searching the internet for matching tops and pants.
Step 5. Make your own strips
If you can't find clothes in the right pattern and color, make your own. You need a plain T-shirt or tights/leggings in one of the required colors. You'll also need masking tape and fabric paint. Make a strip of tape. Once the strips are glued to your liking, you can now paint the shirt.
- Follow the fabric paint guidelines when mixing paint with water or other liquids. Use a brush to paint the strips between the tape on the clothes.
- Let the paint dry for about an hour before removing the tape.
Step 6. Makeup
There are several choices of facial makeup that can be taken. You can use a simple design that is effective if applied correctly, or do a full paint job with multiple layers. Depending on the style you're going for, you may want to visit a costume shop for a few sets of face paint, or something similar at the convenience store.
Consider the quality of your make-up and try to get high-quality products. The result will look better and friendly on the skin
Step 7. Get the tail
There are several options for cat tails. These tails are usually sold in costume shops at affordable prices. You can also make your own ecot by following these steps:
- Tight black trousers or puffy fabric (fluffy)
- Needle and thread
- Wire and wire cutters (you can use hangers)
- Strips of cloth (used as a belt)
Step 8. Use cat ears
Cat ears for costumes are quite easy to get, especially black cat ears because they are very popular. Therefore, you can buy it at an affordable price. If you want to make your own, prepare the following ingredients:
- Two color fabric
- cloth wire
- Tang
- Scissors
- Headbands (Headbands)
Method 2 of 3: Wearing Makeup
Step 1. Apply the base coat
You can use face paint or makeup. Apply yellow basecoat all over the face. This is the iconic basis for the Cheshire Cat from the 1951 cartoon.
Step 2. Apply a layer of purple color
Rub the purple color with the sponge around the outside of your face so that the yellow fades. You can use a regular sponge if you don't have any makeup accessories. Make sure to cover all areas outside the face, such as the top of the forehead, neck, ears, etc.
Step 3. Highlight the cheeks
Pat the cheeks with white to brighten them up. It's a good idea to look at an image of the Cheshire Cat and apply paint to mimic that image.
Step 4. Provide additional details
Use yellow or white eyeliner along your waterline. Paint the nose with black paint. You can use black eyeliner to create cat whiskers.
Step 5. Create a Cheshire Cat smile
You don't need to make up your mouth using makeup around your mouth, but just purple lipstick. There are several ways to smile a Cheshire Cat with makeup. Depending on your makeup skills, you can make a classic smile or a scary face with sharp teeth.
- For a classic smile: Use white makeup to create a wide smiley face around the mouth. After the white dries, use a soft-bristled brush or eyeliner to create the teeth. The classic smile from the cartoon has only one row of teeth.
- The Cheshire Cat's smile in Tim Burton's movie is much scarier because it's sharp and fang-like. To make it, you need to draw a crescent moon using black paint. After the black paint has dried, make small teeth in the shape of a triangle, or like a shark's tooth. Make two rows of teeth: one from the top of the mouth, and the other from the bottom of the mouth.
Method 3 of 3: Create the Tail and Ears
Step 1. Buy a headband
You can buy them at affordable prices at clothing stores. Choose black or a color that matches your scheme. Buy a cheap headband as you will be gluing and sewing it on another headband.
Step 2. Make ears out of fabric
Choose two types of fabric for the inside and outside of the cat's ears. Cut four of the darker colored fabrics and two of the lighter ones. You can use glue or sewing to hold them together.
- Attach one inner triangle to one large triangle, and repeat on the other ear.
- Attach the one remaining triangle as the back of the ear. Leave a small opening at the bottom to insert the wire frame into the ear.
Step 3. Strengthen the ears with wire
You can use hangers to make small wire frames that will hang over your ears. Use pliers to cut two strips from the hanger. Fold the wire to form a sharp triangle. Insert the wire into the costume ear.
- Adjust the size if the wire is too long,
- You can also buy craft wire at a hobby shop.
- Use glue to attach the wire to the ear.
Step 4. Attach the ear to the headband
Sew or glue the triangles to hold the costume ears together, then glue them to the headband. Use a mirror to determine the best ear location. Glue is best for holding ears in headbands.
Step 5. Create the tail
Use a coat hanger as a frame for the cat's tail. Cut the sides of the coat hanger using wire cutters or pliers. Make the end of the wire slightly twisted. Wrap the wire with puffed cloth or used leggings. To glue the tail, use hot glue while wrapping the tail.
- You can find furry fabric at a costume or craft store. Some of the fabrics are sold for use as tails and are sized accordingly.
- Trim excess fabric from the wire.
Step 6. Attach the cat's tail
This step is very simple. You only need black thread. First, wrap the thread around the waist to find out what length to use. Cut the thread to the measured length. Use hot glue, stapler or tape to attach the tail to the center of the thread
- It is better to cut the thread a bit longer than shorter.
- You can also attach the tail to the belt using masking tape
Tips
- You can dye your hair purple.
- This costume works best with short hair.
