3 Ways to Make Your Own Batman Costume

Whether you call it "The Caped Crusader", "The Dark Knight", "The World's Greatest Detective", or simply "Batman", the Batsuit has become an icon. Batman wears his Batsuit to cover up his identity and intimidate the baddies, but you can make your own Batsuit just for fun-and if you can end up intimidating a few baddies, that's even better! Get started with Step 1 below.

Step 1. Decide what kind of Batman you want to be

Just as Batman has evolved since he first appeared in May 1939, so have his costumes. There are two common looks of Batman:

• The Dark Knights:

  This is a darker version of Batman that started appearing after the “Batman Begins” movie. The film depicts Batman as an outcast in Gotham City, a defender of the truth living outside the law. Alfred Pennyworth puts it best, in "The Dark Knight" when he says, "Face it, Mr Wayne. Please accept. They're going to hate you for it, but that's the point of being Batman, he can be an outcast. He can make choices that no one else can. The right choice."

• The World's Greatest Detective:

  This is the iconic comic version of Batman. This Batman costume is more playful and colorful (with bright yellow accents) and follows the detective style of fighting crime. This costume depicts a cute Batman character exclaiming “Stay in place!” to Arnold as Mr. Freeze.

  Method 1 of 3: Becoming a Dark Knight

  

  Step 1. Make a dark colored costume

  Unlike the first Batman costume, Dark Night's costume is much more sophisticated. Here's how to make it.

  • Start with a full-body or unitard trouser suit. Preferably black and long sleeves. The suit should be very snug and elastic for comfortable movement. You can find them at stores that sell ballet gear, or if you're going to be spending time outside in the cold, you can wear a neoprene suit like the ones used by divers, surfers and rowers (and that might be a little tolerable if you haven't just finished training). with Ra's al Ghul and the League of Shadows).#*Add armor. Use armor to play black paintball to create a hard skeleton for the Batsuit. Every part of your body should have this hard frame, but you'll especially want to cover your chest and upper arms.
  • Fill in the skeleton. Batman's suit clearly shows how big each of his stomach muscles is, to cause fear in the hearts of criminals and crooks. You can fill your abs by adding a generous amount of Puffy Paint (available at Walmart) to the harness, or using solid, paintable Styrofoam (available at craft stores) to add muscle.
  • Add the Batman emblem. The Batman crest covers the center of your chest. The emblem is a completely black bat symbol and should have nothing around it. You can use this pattern: simply print it as large as you want, trace it onto cardboard, and cut it carefully with a square-cutting knife.
  • Add gloves. Gloves should be elbow-length, black and have three "fins" running down the sides. These fins should be stiff and in the opposite direction from Batman.

  

  Step 2. Fasten your tool belt

  It is a stiff black or dark metal belt with large rectangular pockets on the sides that hold Batman's tools. You can use an inexpensive woven belt with a black buckle, and an empty jewelry box or eyeglass case as the pouch.

  

  Step 3. Add Bat-gadgets as desired

  Work hard and try adding equipment like a Bat-monitor (black walkie-talkie), Bat-cuff (black paint sprayed handcuffs), Bat-lasso (black climbing rope), Bat-Tracer (any color black with flashing red or blue LEDs), Batarangs (anywhere that sells new boomerangs, painted black), etc.

  

  Step 4. Put a cape on the "Caped Crusader

  You should have a black robe touching the floor, cutting straight down the bottom. Sheets that have been dipped in black dye can also be used. Cotton is fine, but satin is better. Kevlar is best. Good luck with the latter!

  

  Step 5. Put on the boots

  These boots are closer to military boots than rain boots. The fewer straps or buckles, the more authentic the boots will look.

  

  Step 6. The Masked Man

  Complete your costume with the perfect Batman mask. Purchase a black rubber mask with pointed ears protruding from the top side of your head. Your nose should be stiff and pointed. The mouth and chin should be fully visible and the eyes should only show the whites of the eyes.

  Use black make-up to "dark" the skin around your eyes so the mask makes you look like a Dark Knight

  Method 2 of 3: Becoming Batman, The World's Greatest Detective:

  

  Step 1. It's simple

  Unlike the Dark Knight suit, Batman's days from detective comics are much simpler. Here's how to make it.

  • Start with a full-body or unitard trouser suit. The suit should be neutral or slightly bluish-grey, with long sleeves. Unless you're already muscular, the suit will be loose enough for you to fill. You can find them at stores that sell ballet gear, or if you're going to be spending time outside in the cold, you can wear a neoprene suit like that of divers, surfers and rowers.
  • Don't think too much about getting a unitard if you can't find one-the gear belt will make the setting look continuous. Make sure your pants are not loose at the bottom-these should be tucked into your boots.

  

  Step 2. Put on black panties

  Not boxers. Batman is an outcast, he has no problem wearing his underwear over his gray suit. So, look for underwear that does not have any writing on it. Dark blue can also work, depending on which era Batman you're trying to emulate.

  

  Step 3. Build your muscles

  Use shoulder pads that you can get from a fabric store to add muscle to your body to fill the suit, or use partially inflated balloons.

  

  Step 4. Add the Batman emblem

  This crest will cover the center of your chest. The appearance of the coat of arms has been interpreted in two different ways: a yellow sideways elongated oval with a black "bat" inside OR a black "bat" symbol with nothing around it.

  

  Step 5. Put on your gloves

  Gloves should be elbow-length, and should match the color of the Bat-brief (underwear), and have three fins attached to the sides. These fins should be stiff and in the opposite direction from Batman.

  

  Step 6. Fasten your tool belt

  It's the iconic yellow belt with a large gold Batman symbol on the front and small yellow rectangular pockets that hold Batman's gear. You may be able to find a yellow vinyl belt at Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Otherwise, there will always be costume shops, which may have a yellow Batman Utility Belt.

  

  Step 7. Add Bat-gadgets as desired

  Work hard and try adding gear like Bat-monitor (walkie-talkie), Bat-cuff, Bat-lasso, Bat-Tracer (anything with a flashing LED light), Batarang (anywhere that sells the latest boomerang, painted black or yellow), etc.

  

  Step 8. Put a cape on the "Caped Crusader

  You should have a black robe touching the floor with jagged edges and blue stripes. The edges should be reminiscent of bat wings.

  

  Step 9. Put on black boots

  The height of these boots should be below the knee. There should be no laces or ties to the boots. Batman doesn't have time for that. Try the black rain boots.

  

  Step 10. Complete your costume with the perfect Batman mask

  Make a black cloth mask with pointed ears protruding from the top of your head. You should have a pointy nose (like a pyramid). the mouth and chin should be fully visible and the eyes should have almond-shaped holes for viewing.

  Method 3 of 3: Bringing Friends

  

  Step 1. Have your friends dress up as one of the family of heroes or enemies of Batman

  The obvious choices are:

  • Catwoman. Friend or foe? Who knows. Either way, there's not much to say about this costume. Get ready to meet your mate, the Caped Crusader:
  • Robin, the Wonder Boy. Make sure Robin matches the Bat-era you choose. Robin's costume from the Dark Knight era is black with red accents, while the traditional Robin is a little more colorful:
  • The Joker. Green hair, white face, blackened eyes, smudged red lipstick, and purple suit have you almost done. Just how unevenly you make up the face and how vibrant the outfit is will determine whether you're the former Joker or the latter.
  • Other big enemies that can provide the opportunity to create great costumes include The Riddler, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Two-Face, the Penguin, Mr. Freeze, or Bane.
