Making your own smoke bomb at home can be a quick and easy craft project. The formula used can produce large, colorful puffs of smoke. Blue and orange dyes usually do the best, but you can still use any color you want.

Step

Part 1 of 2: Making Mixes

Step 1. Mix potassium nitrate (60 grams) with sugar (40 grams)

Put the ingredients in a saucepan and heat it on low heat. If you can't measure it in grams, use a tablespoon as a measuring device. You can use 3 tablespoons of potassium nitrate and 2 tablespoons of sugar.

Be careful when mixing chemicals. Make sure you always take the proper precautions

Step 2. Let the mixture "cook"

Keep stirring the mixture on low heat. Heat the mixture until it thickens (like caramel) and turns brown. This process takes less than 15 minutes so make sure you keep an eye on the mixture being heated.

Again, be careful when cooking the mixture. Don't let you leave it

Step 3. Remove the mixture from the heat when it is cooked

When the mixture starts to look like peanut butter, remove the mixture from the heat. Now, the mixture has a thick and creamy consistency.

Step 4. Add baking soda to the mixture

Once the pan is removed from the stove, add a teaspoon of baking soda to the pan and stir the mixture. The amount of baking soda used does not have to be exact.

Baking soda can produce a chemical reaction, so be careful when adding it to the mixture

Step 5. Add coloring agent

Prepare three tablespoons of dye with the color you want to use and put it in a saucepan. After that, stir until evenly distributed. It's a good idea to have measured and placed the coloring agent in a separate bowl so it's ready to be used for this step.

Step 1. Fill the container with the bomb mixture

While the mixture is still hot and soft, fill a jar, paper bowl, or other container with the mixture. When poured, the mixture should be liquid (like hot caramel) or powder. Compress until the mixture fills the top of the container.

Since the mixture is still hot, be careful when pouring it. Wear heat-resistant gloves if available. Keep containers filled with the mixture away from various sources of ignition

Step 2. Insert a pen or pencil into the mixture

Take a pen and stick it into the mixture right in the middle. You don't have to stick it all the way down to the bottom of the container, but make sure the pen is buried deep enough to allow it to stand upright without being held down. Let stand for about an hour until the mixture hardens.

Step 3. Wrap the bomb

Use thick adhesive tape (duct tape) to wrap the top, bottom, and sides of the bomb tube. You can use adhesive tape in any available color. Leave a small hole around the wick.

Step 4. Replace the pen with the wick

Take out the pen and replace it with the wick of the fireworks. Use a cotton swab to hold the wick on the smoke bomb. Make sure there is at least a 1cm long wick sticking out so you can light the smoke bomb.

The firework wick itself is harmless as long as it is not lit. However, make sure you prepare and install the wick in a place far enough from any open source of fire

Step 5. Light the created smoke bomb

Use the lighter to light the wick of the smoke bomb. Light the smoke bomb outdoors as the smoke will rise quickly once the wick burns deep enough.
