Smoke bombs are no joke. You should only use it if you are used to handling hazardous materials such as gunpowder. The way these bombs work will be similar to what you usually see in movies. There are different levels of smoke bomb explosions so choose the one that suits you best.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Making a Smoke Bomb
Step 1. Prepare materials and supplies
The contents of the bomb can also be used as a standard smoke bomb if fitted with a fuse. You will need a digital scale, KNO3 (potassium nitrate), powdered sugar, gloves, an ice cream stick or other mixing stick, and a durable beaker.
- You'll also need something as a mold for liquid powder, such as a cardboard tube made of paper towels.
- KNO3 can be obtained at hardware stores. If it's hard to find, try looking at a hobby shop or online.
- Choose rubber gloves as they are best suited for this project.
- Wear eye protection and cover your skin. This precaution is important when heating chemicals. Also wear thick gloves.
- You'll also need packing materials: toy gun paper bullets, X-ACTO knife, duct tape, and gunpowder. These paper bullets are long paper tapes containing explosives for toy guns.
- Gunpowder can be obtained at shops that sell weapons. If you can't find it, try searching online stores.
Step 2. Measure your powders
Use 70 grams of KNO3 and 30 grams of sugar. After weighing the powder, put it in a beaker and mix it well.
Step 3. Heat the mixture
Use an electric stove with low heat. Put on gloves, then stir continuously to prevent the compound from burning. Continue heating and stirring until the mixture is runny and charred brown.
Watch out for fire! If you're not careful, this mixture can catch fire and produce smoke
Step 4. Transfer to a wrapping container
Transfer the mixed liquid to a wrapping container of your choice. Use a small container so that the smoke bomb can be used at any time. The best container for a smoke bomb is something that can be disposed of easily once the mixture has settled, such as a quarter of a cardboard roll-up tube. You can also use film cartridges for analog cameras.
Step 5. Allow the mixture to harden
Leave the mixture for a few hours. If you want to be careful, put the container in the refrigerator or freezer. This mixture takes more than an hour to cool in the freezer.
Step 6. Wrap it with paper bullets
Place a small piece of tape on the end of the paper bullet tape and attach it to the top of the KNO3 mixture container. Then, cover the outside of the mixed container with a paper bullet. Tape the paper bullet with masking tape when the entire surface is covered.
Step 7. Prepare the gunpowder
Cut two strips of tape that are slightly larger than KNO3. Stand a strip over the first piece of tape to make a cross. The adhesive side of the tape is facing up. Sprinkle gunpowder over the cross of this tape.
Make sure the outer edge of the tape is not exposed to the gunpowder
Step 8. Wrap it with tape
Now that the cross of the tape has been prepared with gunpowder, it's time to finish this project. Take the KNO3 that has been coated with paper bullets and wrap it with masking tape. This cross should fit on the bomb easily. Flatten any air bubbles, and we're done.
Throw the smoke bomb outdoors firmly against a hard surface (e.g. asphalt)
Method 2 of 2: Using the Firecracker Technique
Step 1. Gather the ingredients
You'll need a loose container, which can be made of paper or something fragile, like paper towels. For the filling, prepare firecrackers and magnesium powder.
You can get magnesium powder at a hobby shop or online. Make sure this powder is not confused with magnesium citrate which is a health supplement
Step 2. Mix the ingredients
Mix firecrackers with magnesium on a piece of paper. For good quality, you need to use 3-4 firecrackers and a teaspoon of magnesium powder.
Step 3. Wrap your ingredients
Complete this process by wrapping both ingredients in a container of your choice. You can use tissue paper if you have to. Once wrapped, seal the mixture so tightly. When you're done, throw it on a hard surface and you'll see flashes, explosions and smoke!
You can use tape or glue to seal the smoke bomb
Warning
- Always wear safety glasses and experiment outdoors.
- Never throw these bombs at living things and always throw them away from people's homes.
