If you have old, unused crayons, why not recycle them into new lipstick? Many lipstick products on the market contain various chemicals, but lipsticks made from crayons are non-toxic, require only one main ingredient, and you make them yourself so they are more hygienic. Plus, creating new colors can be a lot of fun. Use this article to guide you through making lipstick from crayons. It is possible that you have some new ideas of your own.
Ingredients
- 1 stick of non-toxic crayon
- teaspoon shea butter
- to teaspoon oil that is safe for consumption (food grade) such as almond, argan, coconut, jojoba, or olive oil
- Glitter (gloss powder) cosmetic (optional)
- 1-2 drops essence or extract (optional)
Step
Part 1 of 4: Preparing the Ingredients
Step 1. Choose a container for lipstick
Lipstick should be stored in a container so that it does not get dust or dirt. Here are some types of containers you can use:
- Contact lens case
- Empty lipstick holder or chapstick tube
- Lip balm container
- Container used for eye shadow or blush
- pill box
Step 2. Wash and sterilize the container to be used
If the container has not been cleaned, wash the container thoroughly with soap and warm water. After that, use a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol to sterilize the cleaned container. Use a cotton swab to reach tight gaps, such as corners.
Step 3. Leave the container open and set aside
The lipstick will start to harden quickly and you will need to pour it into the container before it hardens. Make sure the container is in an easily accessible place and is open so that it is ready to use.
Step 4. Peel off the crayon wrapping paper
You can do this by placing the crayon under warm running water for a few minutes, then removing the crayon wrapping paper. You can also use a craft knife or a cutter to scrape the wrapping paper along the body of the crayon and remove it.
Discard any parts of the crayon that are not covered in wrapping paper, as these areas may be contaminated with germs, bacteria, or other crayon colors
Step 5. Break the crayon into four equal lengths
Hold the crayon with your fingers and break it into smaller pieces. If you're having trouble, use a sharp knife to cut it. Breaking the crayon into smaller pieces will make it easier for the crayon to melt. Also, it will be easier if you want to mix it with other colors.
Part 2 of 4: Making Lipstick on the Stove
Step 1. Make a kind of double-boiler
Fill the pot with water to a height of 2.5 to 5 cm. Place a metal or heat-resistant glass bowl over the pan. Make sure that the bottom of the bowl doesn't touch the surface of the water.
Step 2. Turn on the stove and let the water boil
The hot steam that comes out of the boiling water is what will melt the crayons, butter, and oil.
Step 3. After the water in the pot boils, reduce the heat to medium, tend to be low
Since you're melting a small amount of material, the melting process will be faster. Use a lower heat to prevent the ingredients from melting too quickly.
Step 4. Place the crayon pieces in a bowl and let the crayons begin to melt
You can use just one color, or combine different colors to create your own unique color. Stir the crayon pieces occasionally with a fork or spoon.
Step 5. Add shea butter and safe oil to a bowl
You can use any type of oil as long as it's safe to eat, but some oils (such as coconut oil) can give lipstick a more pleasant taste and aroma than others.
For a lighter shade of lipstick, use teaspoon of oil. If you want a more intense color, use only teaspoon
Step 6. Keep stirring until all the ingredients are completely melted
At this point, you can add additional ingredients, such as extracts or essences, or cosmetic glitter if you prefer.
Step 7. Remove the bowl from the pan
To protect your hands from scalding, use cooking gloves or a napkin.
Step 8. Pour the lipstick into the prepared empty container
Use a spoon to help you pour the liquid lipstick so it doesn't splatter everywhere.
Step 9. Allow the lipstick to cool
You can let the lipstick cool in the kitchen or the room where you make it, or you can put it in the fridge or freezer.
Part 3 of 4: Making Lipstick Using Wax
Step 1. Place the candle on a heat-resistant base/surface and light it
Use a match or lighter to light it. Make sure you work near a sink or have water near you in case the wax rolls over.
Step 2. Hold the spoon over the fire
Keep the distance between the spoon and the fire about 2.5 cm.
Step 3. Place the crayon pieces in a spoon and let the crayons melt
It took about 30 seconds before the crayons started to melt. Make sure you stir occasionally with a toothpick.
Step 4. Add the shea butter and oil, and stir again using a toothpick
You can use any oil as long as it's safe to eat, but some oils, such as coconut oil, will give you a more pleasant taste and aroma than others.
- For a lighter shade of lipstick, use teaspoon of the oil of your choice.
- For a stronger color, use teaspoon of the oil of your choice.
Step 5. Keep stirring until all the ingredients are completely melted
At this point, you can add other ingredients, such as extracts for flavor or cosmetic glitter for a glossy look. If the spoon becomes too hot to handle, use cooking gloves or wrap the handle in a towel/napkin.
Step 6. Pour the melted ingredients into the container
Once all the ingredients are melted and there are no more lumps, remove the spoon from the heat and carefully pour the liquid lipstick into the container. Turn off the candle after the job is done.
Step 7. Let the lipstick cool
You can let the lipstick cool in the room you work in, or put it in the fridge or freezer.
Part 4 of 4: Adding Variety to Lipstick
Step 1. Consider adding shine to your lipstick with cosmetic glitter
Don't use glitter for crafts because even if it's very subtle, it's still too big for lipstick. Instead use safe cosmetic glitter. You can buy them in beauty stores or on the internet.
You can also use metallic crayons to make lipstick with a pearly shimmer
Step 2. Consider using castor oil for a glossy lipstick
When making lipstick, replace the oil of your choice with castor oil.
Step 3. Create new shades of color by mixing two or three pieces of crayon with different colors
You can mix as many colors as you like, but make sure you don't use more than one stick of crayon. Here are some color combinations you can try:
- To create a stronger pink, add a dark burgundy color.
- If the pink color is too light, add a piece of peach colored crayon.
- Create a shimmery purplish red by mixing gold crayon and purplish crayon in a 1:2 ratio. You can make your lipstick sparkle even more by adding gold cosmetic glitter.
- Use Melon and Magenta crayons in a 1:1 ratio to create a bright pink color.
- Create a bright red color using Red Orange and Wild Strawberry colored crayons in a 1:1 ratio.
- For a natural beige color, use Bittersweet and Peach colored crayons in a 1:1 ratio.
- To produce a silvery purple, use Silver and Purple crayons in a 1:1 ratio.
Step 4. Use extracts and essences and oils to add flavor and aroma
You only need a drop or two of the extract, essence or oil of your choice. Please keep in mind that certain tastes and aromas are stronger than others. So you have to adjust the usage, either less/more. In addition, the taste and aroma become stronger after the lipstick hardens. Here are some extracts and essences that are suitable for homemade lipstick:
- Coconut
- Grapefruit or tangerine
- Peppermint
- Vanilla
Tips
- Try to use high-quality crayons from trusted brands. Low-quality crayons, such as those used in restaurants, tend to contain less pigment and more wax.
- Consider using a funnel to help pour liquid lipstick into a narrow container, such as an empty lipstick container or chapstick tube.
- Keep in mind that certain colors tend to contain more pigment than others.
- If you want a lip balm with a slight tinge of color or a lipstick with a less intense color, try using only stick of crayon instead of a full stick.
Warning
- Crayon manufacturers do not approve the use of crayons for cosmetics. Crayola has so far stated that it does not support and does not recommend the use of crayons as cosmetics. On the other hand, the supposedly “strict” testing for cosmetics is also not disclosed transparently. So, the decision is yours.
- Beware of reactions and irritations. Crayons have been tested for use as an artistic tool, and are not tested for use as cosmetics. Therefore, the long-term effects of using lipstick from crayons are unknown.
- Don't pour liquid lipstick down the sink. If there is any leftover lipstick, pour it into another container or throw it in the trash. If you pour the remaining liquid lipstick down the sink, the lipstick will harden and cause a squish.
- Be aware that crayons have a higher lead content than regular lipstick. To prevent complications, do not use crayon lipstick every day. Consider using it only once or twice a month, or using it as part of costumes and special events.
