Excited to make lipstick with your own hands? You may even have the ingredients at home. Making your own lipstick reduces the cost of buying makeup. In addition, you can also make lipstick with rainbow colors that you yourself have never seen anyone else wear. Learn how to make lipstick using natural ingredients, eyeshadow, or crayons to create the color you want.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Natural Ingredients
Step 1. Prepare the ingredients for making lipstick
Most lipstick ingredients are base ingredients, and you adjust them by adding pigment. The ingredients you use to make your lipstick base can be tweaked to make the lipstick more glossy, matte, or balm-like. Here's what you need:
- 1 tsp beeswax (beeswax or beeswax beads). You can buy beeswax at a craft supply store.
- 1 tsp shea butter, mango butter, almond butter, or avocado butter. These ingredients form a smooth lipstick.
- 1 tsp oil such as almond oil, extra virgin olive oil, or jojoba.
Step 2. Choose a lipstick color
Once you have the basic ingredients, the next step is to choose a color. There are many natural ingredients that can be used to use different shades of red, pink, brown and orange. Remember that this lipstick recipe is natural, so the resulting color will be soft and earthy. Consider these options:
- For a bright red lipstick, use beetroot powder.
- Cinnamon can be used to produce a reddish-brown color.
- Turmeric can be mixed with other powders to produce copper tones.
- Cocoa powder produces a dark brown lipstick.
Step 3. Melt the lipstick base ingredients
Put the lipstick base ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl. Place in the microwave and heat for 30-seconds until melted. Stir the ingredients well until thoroughly mixed.
You can also melt the ingredients in a double pan. Heat about 5 cm of water in a large saucepan over medium-high heat, then add the ingredients to the smaller saucepan that was in the first pot. Stir and heat until completely melted and evenly mixed
Step 4. Mix colors
Now the fun part: add 1/8 - 1/4 tsp of powder of any natural color you want. Add powder if you want a darker color. Stir the color powder into the base solution, and keep adding little by little until you're happy with the color that forms.
Step 5. Pour the solution into the container
You can use used lipstick containers, small cosmetic containers, or other containers with lids to store your new lipstick. Let the lipstick harden at room temperature or in the refrigerator before you use it.
Method 2 of 4: Eyeshadow
Step 1. Prepare the eyeshadow
Use your old eyeshadow (or buy cheap eyeshadow) in powder or solid form rather than gel. Place the eyeshadow in a bowl and use the back of a spoon to blend it until you get a smooth, lump-free powder.
- To make the lipstick look shiny, try adding a little sparkling eyeshadow to the eyeshadow you've chosen.
- Using eyeshadow is a great way to experiment with interesting eyeshadow colors. Eyeshadow is like a color pigment, so we choose it as a lipstick color. Try greens, blues, blacks, and other colors that are hard to find in lipstick shades.
- You need to know that some eyeshadows are not safe to use on the lips. So, check the ingredients first. Do not use eyeshadows that contain ultramarine, ferric ferrocyanide, and/or chromium oxide. Only use eyeshadow that contains safe iron oxide.
Step 2. Mix eyeshadow powder with petroleum jelly
Place about a tablespoon of petroleum jelly in a microwave-safe bowl. Add a teaspoon of eyeshadow powder. Put the mixture in the microwave and heat until it melts and is liquid, then stir until the color is even.
- Add more powder if you want a darker lipstick. (darker/ opaque)
- Add less powder for a colored lip gloss look. (Brighter / Translucent)
- In addition to petroleum jelly, you can use chapstick/lip balm.
Step 3. Pour the batter into the container
Use your lipstick or chapstick tube, small cosmetic container, or any container as long as it has a lid. Let the dough harden before you use it.
Method 3 of 4: Crayons
Step 1. Prepare a box of crayons
The advantage of this method is that you can create a light, beautiful lipstick in almost any color tone. Use the broken crayons you already have or you can buy a new box of crayons to make your lipstick. You need one crayon to make a tube of lipstick.
- Choose a brand of crayon that is safe to eat in small amounts. Since children often put crayons in their mouths, many brands are tested to make sure the crayons are non-toxic. Choose a box of crayons labeled as such. Do not use oil pastels or other professional art supplies, as such products are not as tightly regulated as children's crayons.
- Sniff the crayons before you buy a box of crayons. You'll be wearing it on your lips, so make sure you use a crayon that doesn't smell too strong.
Step 2. Melt the crayons in a double pan
If you try to heat the crayons without a double pan, the crayons will burn. Open the crayon label paper and discard the paper. Place the crayons in the top of the double boiler and heat over medium heat until melted.
- You can make a double using two pans, a small one and a large one. Put a few inches of water in the large pot and place the smaller pot in the larger one, so that the smaller one floats on top of the water. Place the crayons in a smaller saucepan, then heat over medium heat and allow the crayons to melt.
- It's better to use an old or used pan to melt the crayons, as they can be difficult to clean.
Step 3. Pour some oil
You can use olive, almond, jojoba, or coconut oil. Stir with melted crayon until smooth.
Step 4. Add fragrance
A few drops of essential oil can mask or disguise the smell of the crayon. Use rose, peppermint, lavender, or other essential oils. Make sure the essential oils you use are safe to use on and around your lips.
Step 5. Pour the batter into the container
Use used lipstick or chapstick containers, or small cosmetic containers, or other containers with lids. After pouring the hot solution into the container, put it in the refrigerator to let the lipstick harden.
Method 4 of 4: Using Old Lipstick
Step 1. Mix some old lipstick in a microwave-safe container
This method is suitable if you have several old lipsticks that you want to update the color. You can use lipstick in a similar shade, or create a new color by choosing several different shades.
Make sure all the lipstick you use has not expired. Lipstick that is more than 2 years old should not be used and should be discarded
Step 2. Melt the lipstick in the microwave
Place the lipstick in the microwave on high for 5 seconds. Allow the lipstick to melt and then mix until the color is combined with a plastic spoon or stir bar.
- Continue to heat the lipstick in the microwave at 5 second intervals until well blended.
- You can also melt the entire lipstick in a double pan instead of in the microwave. Consider adding about 1 tsp (5 ml) of beeswax or petroleum jelly to every 10 cm of lipstick you use to add a moisturizing effect to your lipstick. Stir well until well blended.
Step 3. Pour the mixture into the container
When ready, pour the lipstick with the new color into a container or cosmetic jar. Allow the lipstick to cool and harden before using.
Apply new lipstick using your fingers or a brush
Tips
- If you want to moisturize your lips add a little aloe vera gel.
- Add vanilla extract or other extracts to make your lipstick taste good.
- There are other ways to make lip gloss with petroleum jelly, but instead of eyeshadow, use a Kool-Aid mixture. This method is cheaper and works just as well.
- Mica is great for making makeup. However, make sure to use pigment, and mix well to avoid clumping.
Warning
- If you use crayons to make makeup, we recommend choosing Crayola or other non-toxic children's crayons as "professional" crayons are often toxic if even small amounts are swallowed.
- Crayola says it doesn't recommend using crayons as lipstick because they may be contaminated. Crayola also states that it does not test its products such as makeup.
- Be careful, the ingredients will be very hot when removed from the microwave.
