Replacing the door is quite a complicated job. Not all doors will fit when installed. To find out what type of door you need, you'll need to measure the pre-installed door. By accurately measuring the entire side of the door, noting any additional features, and making a diagram based on the information obtained, you can determine the size of the door you need.
Step
Part 1 of 2: Measuring Doors
Step 1. Measure the width of the door
Spread the measuring tape from the left to the right corner of the door, then record the results. Remember, you only need to measure the door. Do not measure other elements, such as door seals.
- When measuring an old door, it is important that you measure it in different sections. This is done because the door may not be perfectly rectangular. If the measurement results vary, choose the largest.
- 75 cm, 80 cm, 90 cm wide doors are standard door types.
Step 2. Measure the height of the door
Spread the measuring tape from the top corner to the bottom corner of the door, then record the results. You may have to use a chair and/or ask a friend for help. You only need to measure the door and not other elements, such as door seals.
- It's a good idea to measure the door in different sections. This is done if the door is not perfectly rectangular. Old doors are generally like this. If the measurement results vary, choose the largest.
- Most doors are usually 2 meters high.
Step 3. Know the thickness of the door
Place a measuring tape at the end of the door and measure the thickness. In addition, also measure the thickness of the frame. The thickness of the door and frame is generally about the same, but it is helpful to know the thickness of the two.
Most doors are generally 5 cm thick
Step 4. Measure the height and width of the frame
Just in case, measure the area where the door will be installed. Record the height and width of the frame. This is done to ensure that you choose the right replacement door.
- Measure the width of the door at 3 points. Use the smallest size as the measurement result.
- Measure the height of the center of the door. Measure the door from the floor to the bottom of the top trim of the door.
- If necessary, We recommend that you round the measurement to a smaller number. This is done to make sure the door fits snugly.
Part 2 of 2: Making Diagrams
Step 1. Take a picture of the door and then print it
When choosing a new door, you should bring a diagram that lists the sizes and characteristics of the old door. One way to do this is to take a picture of the door and then print it.
You can draw diagrams using paper and pen
Step 2. Note which way the door opens
Open the door. Position your body with your back to the door hinges. When on the right, the door is opened with the right hand. When on the left, the door is opened with the left hand. The door can also swing outward or inward. Know these two characteristics and then record them on the diagram that has been made.
A door that swings in will open into the house (or into the room). A door that swings outward will open to the outside
Step 3. Record all measurements on the chart
Record the height, width, and thickness of the door on the diagram. Also note the height, width, and thickness of the frame.
Step 4. Bring a diagram with you when buying a new door
The diagram will facilitate the process of replacing the door. Bring a diagram with you when choosing a door, and use it as a reference.
