Sliding wardrobe doors, also known as bypass doors, in which one leaf slides behind the other, minimizing the use of space. Follow these steps to install sliding wardrobe doors in every room of your house.
Step
Step 1. Prepare the door for installation
If it's not finished, you'll need to paint or color the door before installing it.
Step 2. Measure the holes to install your wardrobe doors
Determine the horizontal and vertical measurements, as well as the width and height of each old wardrobe door.
Step 3. If necessary, remove the attached cabinet door
If you currently have sliding doors installed in your closet, lift each door leaf from the bottom path first. Then, lower the bottom of each door leaf onto the floor next to the path. Doing this will pull the door off the top path. Set aside the old door leaf.
Step 4. Remove the old track, remove the hinges or screws using an electric drill with a screwdriver tip
Use putty to fill any holes as needed. Paint any large patches of putty that the new sliding doors won't cover.
Step 5. Align the old path with the new to find the correct length for the new path
Cut the new path to match the hole in the cabinet where the door is installed using a hacksaw.
Step 6. Install the new path on the top side of the cabinet hole using an electric drill
- On the previous track there may be holes for screwing the track into your cabinet frame. If not, drill holes and screw in the screws found on your door.
- Make sure the screws are in the grooves so they don't stick out and interfere with the door movement. However, do not apply too tightly as this may break the track.
Step 7. Install the door leaf in the top lane starting from the back door
On the door leaf there is a wheel that will enter the top lane.
- Turn the face of each door leaf so that it faces you when you lift it.
- Lift the door leaf and install it on the top track, starting at the back. Once the rear door is installed, the front door will also fit perfectly on the track. Repeat this process with the second door.
Step 8. Let the door leaf hang straight down from the top track
Mark where to install the bottom line.
Step 9. Remove the door leaf from the top track
Step 10. Attach the bottom track using the marked measurements
Step 11. Hang the door on the top track again, using the same procedure
The bottom of the door will shift if all your measurements are correct.
Tips
- Leaving out old furniture may seem like a time-saver, but take the time to replace old furniture with new ones. The track that comes with the door is custom made to fit the door.
- Instead of throwing your old closet doors in the trash, use them for something else. Try cutting out an old door to make a shelf, use it as a workbench or as a room divider.
