Leather sofas have many advantages including quality, comfort and style. Placed anywhere, living room or relaxing, leather sofa can be a place to sit, lie down and relax. However, even the best leather sofa will fade with time. Or maybe you found the perfect leather sofa at a thrift store or sale in a color you don't like, is stained, or dirty. The best way to refresh the look of a leather sofa without buying a new one is to paint it. Paint the leather sofa by cleaning it with acetone, then apply the color you want on the entire surface of the sofa.
Step
Step 1. Buy leather paint in the color you want
These products can often be found at local tanneries, specialty leather goods stores, or online such as eBay and Leather Unlimited.
Mix colors if you can't find the color you want. For example, if you want a dark brown but the available paint is too light, mix in a little black paint. Use white paint to make the color lighter
Step 2. Move the leather sofa to a place with good ventilation
The basement, garage, or even the driveway in the yard can be good places to do the painting.
Step 3. Place a protective cloth under the sofa to protect the surface or floor of the room you are working in
Step 4. Clean the dust or other dirt on the surface of the sofa with a mixture of water and soap
Do not wet the sofa completely. Just rub gently with a cloth that has been dipped in soapy water and wrung out.
Step 5. Apply acetone to the skin for deeper cleansing while preparing the skin for painting
Dip a clean cloth or rag in the acetone and rub it all over the sofa.
Step 6. Spray the leather sofa with water
The skin should be moderately moist, but not too wet for the paint to absorb easily.
Step 7. Apply leather paint after you have sprayed the worked area with water
Pour a little paint on a clean rag or cloth, then rub it on the sofa. Make sure you wear gloves to protect your hands.
Do one small piece at a time. This will make the process easier and make the color of the sofa more consistent as you paint. Spray water on the area you will paint next, then apply the paint. Continue until the entire sofa is finished painting
Step 8. Use a dry cloth to remove excess paint as you paint each section of the leather sofa
Step 9. Let the leather sofa dry for 1 to 2 hours, then apply the next coat
Apply as many coats of paint as needed to get the color you want. Most leather sofas need three to six coats of paint.
Let the paint dry before applying the next coat
Step 10. Apply a final coat to the leather sofa after the last coat of paint has dried
This product can be purchased wherever you buy the paint. This product may be called a leather finisher or leather top coat. You can choose whether the finish is glossy or not.
Spray the upholstery product on the leather sofa and scrub with a clean damp cloth
Tips
- Remember, you can easily paint a light leather sofa darker, but making a dark leather sofa lighter can be more difficult.
- Remove the pads before you start painting so you can paint them separately.
