Forming your hair into a ribbon is a fun way to add a little twist to your updo. In addition to a classic bun or French twist, consider trying to style your hair into a ribbon. Just a few easy steps will get you the hair that everyone craves for.

Step 1. Straighten your hair

With straight hair you can get the best results for making ribbons of hair because straight hair can show the movement and direction of your hair. Straighten your hair (it doesn't have to be perfect) before starting the updo.

Step 2. Smooth your hair

Brush or comb your hair to keep it from tangling. If your hair is very thick or curly, use a serum to soften your hair so it's more manageable.

Step 3. Tie your hair back

Gather hair on top of your head, leaving bangs if you have them. Use an elastic hair tie to form a ponytail, but stop in the middle of the process. If you can tie up to three loops with an elastic hair tie, stop after the first loop. If you can tie as many as four turns to make a ponytail, stop at the second loop.

Step 4. Make a ribbon shape

When you get to the final second loop, pull 1/3 of your hair and stop. Twist the hair tie, pull out 1/3 of the rest of your hair, and then remove the hair tie. You are left with two knots and a tail of hair hanging from the hair tie.

Step 5. Make a strand in the middle

Take the tail from the ponytail and wrap it between the two knots. Tuck the tail under one (or both) sides of the knot and pin it.

Step 6. Arrange the ribbon shape

If the knots are not in the position you want them to be, twist them to your liking and use a few bobby pins to secure the knots in place. Spray some hairspray and you're done!

Tips

  • Use only part or half of your hair to create a smaller ribbon shape. If you make the ribbon shape smaller, it will make it easier for you to leave the tail of the ribbon.
  • Experiment before using it to school or at work. That way you can find out how long the ribbon shape can last and how much hairspray is needed.
