Many people have problems with dry, rough, and frizzy hair. This generally happens in summer and people with naturally curly hair are more at risk of getting frizzy hair. Here are some tips to reduce frizz and keep it healthy.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Using Hair Care Products
Step 1. Use care products that prevent frizz
There are many brands of conditioner, hair spray, and heat protectant designed to prevent frizz.
- Look for products such as sprays or gels that you can use when your hair is dry and after styling. However, these products do not have a permanent effect on your hair.
- Another type of hair care product you can try is shampoo and conditioner. These products are used when the hair is wet and will have a permanent effect and better results on your hair. The results you get will certainly not happen instantly, but it's worth it.
Step 2. Make sure you use a sulfate-free shampoo and silicone-free conditioner
Sulfates are harsh detergents that strip away the natural oils that help keep hair moisturized. One of the oils that can be lost is sebum which functions to keep hair moisturized and helps hair growth. Silicone is a chemical added to many conditioners to keep hair moisturized. The silicone will create a layer that protects the hair from the air and heat. However, this ingredient can remove natural oils that can make hair tangle.
- Don't worry if you're using a sulfate-free shampoo and it doesn't lather because sulfates are what make shampoo lather. If you're applying shampoo to your scalp, work the rest of the shampoo all over your hair, all the way to the ends.
- If you want to dye your hair, use an ammonia-free product. Ammonia can damage hair and damaged hair tends to tangle more easily.
- Avoid products that contain alcohol or citric acid, as these will make your hair more frizzy.
Step 3. Consider using a shampoo made specifically for curly hair
If you have curly hair and a silicone- and sulfate-free shampoo isn't working for you, try using a shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for curly hair. Curly hair is easier to tangle than straight or wavy hair. Shampoos and conditioners specifically for curly hair usually contain more natural oils or ingredients that make hair less prone to frizz.
Step 4. Use an after-shower product specifically for curly hair
Generally these products are used without rinsing. This product can be used when hair is damp or dry. If you don't have a leave-in product, you can use a skin lotion on dry hair. Rub the lotion into your palms until it's damp, then apply it to your hair. This will make your hair softer and more frizz-resistant.
- This method can be done several times if needed. But remember to rub the lotion into your hands until they're slightly damp before applying it to your hair.
- If you apply lotion to your hair without rubbing it into your hands first, your hair will look greasy. This method may take some practice.
Method 2 of 3: Homemade Solution
Step 1. Oil your hair
Apply oil to untangle the tangles from the roots to the tips of the hair. Start by applying a small amount of oil from the middle (at ear level) to the ends of damp hair. Avoid applying oil directly to the scalp so that your hair is not greasy. Oils that are good for detangling include almond oil, argan oil, keratin oil, coconut oil, macadamia oil, olive oil, and Moroccan oil.
- You can use the oil as a hair treatment by applying it to the scalp and hair shaft. Leave it overnight then wash your hair in the morning.
- You can also buy products that contain the aforementioned oils.
Step 2. Add two teaspoons of ground mustard seeds to two tablespoons of milk
Use it on your hair, especially the tangles. Leave for 15-20 minutes then rinse.
Step 3. Consider using a flat iron
This will completely remove frizz, but keep in mind that using a flat iron can cause hair breakage over time. The lower the heat setting you use, the better it is for your hair.
- Do not pull your hair when using the flat iron.
- Look for products made specifically to help protect your hair from the heat from the flat iron.
Step 4. Replace the cotton pillowcase with satin or silk
This will allow your hair to “slide” over the pillow while you sleep, which can reduce frizz. You can also try sleeping on a silk scarf if your hair is curly. To keep a cotton pillowcase from sucking in all the moisture in your hair, tie your hair into a bun and cover it with a silk scarf that will help retain the moisture.
Step 5. Eat foods that contain healthy oils and nuts like olive oil and coconut oil or cashews and almonds
The healthier the food you eat, the healthier your hair will be. You can also use hair-specific vitamins. However, consult your doctor first. This vitamin will make hair stronger, so it is not easily broken and tangled.
Step 6. Trim the split ends
If you don't trim your hair for a long time, the ends of your hair will split, which will lead to more frizz.
Method 3 of 3: Prevent Frizz
Step 1. Don't wash your hair every day
Washing your hair daily can remove the oils that keep your hair soft and healthy. Instead, wash your hair once a week and use conditioner every time you wet your hair. Use dry shampoo if your hair feels very oily.
Use hair shampoo once or twice a week, up to three times
Step 2. Keep your hair moisturized with conditioner
This is an important part of preventing frizz. Use a conditioner that can be left on for a long time, about 15-30 minutes each time you wash your hair. Frizzy hair occurs because the pores of dry hair suck the moisture in the air so that the hair shaft becomes open. Conditioner with extra moisture will coat the hair shaft and prevent tangling.
Step 3. Don't touch your hair too often
If you have curly hair or plan to style your hair in a curly style, try not to touch it when it's wet to prevent frizz. You can also use olive oil or coconut oil when braiding your hair. Ties and headbands can pull and make hair fall out which can cause further damage. So, be careful when choosing and using hair accessories.
Step 4. When washing your hair, never use your nails to scratch the scalp
This will tear the scalp and cause damage to the hair which can then lead to tangling. Always use your fingers to massage your scalp when washing your hair.
Step 5. Let hair dry naturally
Avoid blow drying your hair or wrapping it in a towel. Use a large-toothed comb to untangle your hair instead of using a fine-toothed comb or brush. Once your hair is completely dry, you can gently comb your hair with a comb or brush. A slight tug on the hair can cause frizz.
- Don't wrap your hair in a towel. Wrapping hair will cause frizz. Try placing a towel on your hair and then gently patting it to dry. Avoid rubbing your hair with a towel.
- Ordinary towels can cause friction and tangling. Try using a microfiber towel or a t-shirt that contains 100% cotton.
- Do not dry hair with a dryer. If you blow dry your hair after shampooing, it will be damaged by the heat. If you absolutely must use a dryer, allow your hair to dry 90 percent before using the dryer. Too much hot air focused directly on your hair strands will reduce the humidity so that the hair will become more frizzy especially during the winter months when the air is less humid.
Tips
- Take a shower using cold water.
- Never comb your hair when it is wet. This will cause hair loss and make hair more frizzy.
- If your hair gets tangled while you're out and about, don't panic. Use a drop of argan oil on the hair. You can also use water instead of argan oil.
