Pomade is a styling product that has been used for decades to produce a variety of hairstyles. Traditional pomades are made with oil-based ingredients and are very slippery, but modern pomades found in the market today are made with water-based ingredients so they are easier to clean and don't make hair very stiff. Whether you like sleek and shiny hairstyles, or messy but stylish styles, or spiky hairdos, you can count on pomade to get the look you want and your hairstyle to last all day.
Step
Part 1 of 4: Choosing the Right Pomade
Step 1. Choose between an oil or water based pomade
Oil-based pomades are the more traditional option, while water-based pomades are a bit more popular. Adjust the choice of pomade based on the hairstyle you want.
- Oil-based pomades tend to be less expensive. If you use an oil-based pomade, your hair will look oilier and shinier, and usually last longer. Unfortunately, oil-based pomades do not dissolve in water. So, it can't be cleaned with just water. Using shampoo doesn't help much either. You'll need to buy a shampoo that dissolves fat, but this kind of shampoo also strips the hair of its natural oils.
- Water-based pomades are more hair-friendly, but they are more expensive. This type of pomade will give your hair the same look as an oil-based pomade, but you can wash it off with water. Water-based pomades are not as strong as oil-based pomades, but they can keep your hairdo while allowing you to change your hairstyle at any time.
Step 2. Use a matte pomade, or a glossy pomade, or a mixture of both
The glossy pomade will determine how shiny the hair looks. You can choose the type of pomade based on the hairstyle you want, or based on your hair type.
- Matte pomade is not too shiny and is more suitable for hair that tends to get oily quickly if you use pomade.
- Shiny pomade gives hair a sleeker and shinier appearance and is more suitable for those with dry hair.
- You can mix matte pomade and glossy pomade to create the right balance for your hair type.
Step 3. Decide how strong you want the pomade to be
Pomades on the market have different strengths and provide different resistance. Study different brands of pomade to see what their hold level is: light, medium, or strong.
- If you've never used pomade, start with one that's lightweight. This pomade lets you learn how to style your hair, and still lets you change your hairstyle at any time.
- Pomades that have a light resistance are soft in texture, and pomades with a strong hold are usually thicker.
- If you have thick hair, you may find it better to use a medium or strong hold pomade.
- Try buying different types of pomade to see which one works best for your hair.
Part 2 of 4: Using Pomade
Step 1. Wash your hair first
Pomade will stick better to clean hair. So, wash your hair before styling it with pomade. Wash your hair with shampoo so you can start styling it clean and fresh.
Step 2. Leave the hair in a damp state
Pomade will work best when used on slightly damp hair. After washing your hair, dry your hair briefly with a towel before styling it. It's best if your hair is slightly damp, not still wet with dripping water. That way, the pomade will stick to the hair more easily and will look cool after it dries.
Step 3. Take the pomade the size of a Rp 100 coin with your fingertips
If you want to style your hair with pomade, use as little as possible. So start with a little pomade. You can add it if needed. Take the pomade the size of a Rp100 coin with your fingertip and rub the pomade until it is evenly distributed over the entire fingertip.
If you're using a very thick pomade, you may need to heat it up before using it. Use a hairdryer and run hot air over the pomade for a few seconds to make the pomade warm and softer
Step 4. Run your fingers through the hair you want to style with pomade
Run your fingers through your hair from near the roots to the tips so that the pomade is evenly distributed throughout your hair. If you only want to use the pomade on the ends of your hair, gently pull the ends to apply the pomade.
Make sure that the pomade does not stick to the scalp. This will cause the hair to look very oily and interfere with the natural oils on the scalp
Part 3 of 4: Styling Short Hair
Step 1. Pull the hair up (spike)
Take a small amount of pomade with your fingertips and apply it to the ends of your hair. Use your thumb and other fingers to gently pull the ends of the hair in the direction you want. Continue this process until all the sections of hair you want to stand up are the way you want them to be. Make sure you only apply pomade to the ends of your hair.
- Try to style the front hair in a bun and flatten the sides for a cool look.
- Style your hair at the top of your head in a bun for fun, and make it look taller.
Step 2. Make a messy hairstyle
Cool messy hairstyles are very trendy and worth trying. Take the pomade the size of a Rp 100 coin by hand and spread it on your fingertips. Run your fingers through your hair to apply the pomade. Start at the roots and pull your fingertips all the way to the ends of your hair in an upward pinching motion. Use your fingertips to ruffle the hair by moving it left and right, then back and forth.
- There is no standard rule for creating a messy look. So you have to keep experimenting until you get the look you like.
- Try not to use too much pomade so your hair doesn't look too greasy.
Step 3. Comb hair back
Use a hairbrush to untangle frizzy hair. Apply a small amount of pomade to your hair using your fingertips. Run your fingers through your hair to distribute the pomade. Move your fingers from the roots to the tips of the hair by gently pulling them back. Repeat this process until all the hair is pulled back. Comb your hair with your palms and start at the hairline, then work your way up to the back of your head.
- You can also smooth the front of your hair back and the sides down for a different sleek look.
- For a sleek look that lasts all day, use a moderate to strong pomade.
Part 4 of 4: Styling Long Hair
Step 1. Separate the hair layers
Pomade can be used to create unique styles with long, layered hair. First, take a small amount of pomade with your fingertips and smooth it out. Apply pomade to the inside of one layer to make it lift and separate from the other layers.
- Pull the layer of hair to be styled towards the top (ceiling).
- Use your fingertips to apply a small amount of pomade to the inside of your hair, starting at the roots and working your way down about 2.5-5 cm.
- Be careful when putting the layers of hair back in place. If you do it right, the hair will lift slightly and separate from the layer underneath.
Step 2. Pull your hair and tie it into a ponytail or bun
Tie your hair into a ponytail or bun and secure it with an elastic band. Apply a small amount of pomade on the hands and fingertips, smooth. Smooth the hair with your palms from the hairline to the ponytail. Trim loose strands of hair by hand.
Step 3. Conquer the curls and hide the split ends
You can use pomade to conquer unruly curls and hide split ends. Use a little pomade to achieve this style without making your hair look greasy.
- To detangle unruly curls, apply a small amount of pomade to your fingertips and work your hair loose and backwards like any other hair.
- To hide split ends, apply a small amount of pomade to the finished ends and gently run over the ends of your hair to blend the split ends with the rest of your hair. Apply the pomade to only a small section of hair for a more natural look.
Tips
- Wash your hair at night to remove the pomade so it doesn't dirty the pillowcases and sheets.
- Purchase several types of pomade and experiment to find the type that works best for your hair.
- Put on clothes before styling your hair with pomade so you don't get them dirty.
Warning
- Don't use pomade to style your hair every day. Using too much pomade can close the pores on the scalp and forehead, causing acne. This condition is called pomade acne.
- Use a little pomade when you start styling your hair because a little pomade actually gives better results. If needed, you can always add to it. Too much pomade will make your hair look greasy and dirty.
- Be careful when using a thicker pomade as this type is very sticky and very difficult to remove from hair.
