There are many ways you can use to reduce unwanted facial hair. Many people struggle with this problem, especially if the hair growth is caused by hormonal changes. However, there are many ways available to treat it, from natural remedies you can do yourself at home to complex procedures that are best done at a salon.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Using Chemicals to Remove Hair
Step 1. Try waxing
You can choose to wax at home using a waxing kit or do it at a salon. Waxing pulls hair down to the roots, so it's an effective way to get a smooth face. However, in some people waxing causes skin irritation.
- The warm wax should be applied to the desired area using the applicator included in the waxing kit and wait for the wax to cool. Use your finger to pull the cold wax away from the skin, in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Regular waxing can reduce hair growth because this technique blocks the development of hair follicles.
- If your skin is sensitive to wax, you can try sugaring, which is a natural hair removal method similar to waxing. Add 2 cups of granulated sugar and cup of lemon juice to cup of water. Simmer until it forms a paste. You will need to use low heat for about 25 minutes until the mixture turns yellowish brown. Wait until it cools down. Sprinkle cornstarch or baby powder on your skin. Then apply the paste in the opposite direction of hair growth. Glue a piece of cloth over it, then pull.
Step 2. Use depilatory
Depilatories are chemical products that can remove unwanted hair from the surface of the facial skin. The chemicals present in it dissolve the fur into a gel-like material.
- Apply depilatory to the skin. Leave the drug on the skin according to the time instructions listed on the product packaging. Once you reach the set time limit, wipe the depilatory from your skin using a clean cloth.
- The hair will grow back a few days after using the depilatory. You can buy depilatory drugs at drug or cosmetic stores. The main problem if you use depilatory drugs is the strong chemical smell.
Step 3. Try bleaching
Bleaching does not remove unwanted hair on the face. However, bleaching can make the coat harder to see. The trick is to make sure the products you use match your skin tone.
- If you have thick hair, this is not a great solution for you. Doing regular bleaching can irritate the skin. So, before using it all over the area you should test it on a small patch of skin.
- If you are bleaching, stay out of the sun for at least an hour. Otherwise, the skin will react badly.
Method 2 of 4: Plucking or Removing Feathers
Step 1. Use tweezers to reduce facial hair
This is one of the most common ways people use to get rid of facial hair. This method works best if you don't have too much hair to remove. One or two black hairs on the chin? Remove it with tweezers, and you're done.
- To avoid infection, sterilize the tip of the tweezers first by rubbing alcohol before and after plucking the hair. Gently stretch the skin around the area you want to remove. Pinch the hair near the roots, then pull it firmly.
- Hair removal is inexpensive, but time consuming. The process may be painful and can cause ingrown hairs if the hair breaks under the skin when it is removed. You can avoid ingrown hairs by pulling the hair out carefully, not tugging at it with tweezers.
- Once removed, the hair will grow back in 3-8 weeks.
Step 2. Try a disposable or reusable razor for a wet shave
Apply shaving gel or foam to your chin or upper lip. Sweep the razor over the skin in the direction of hair growth.
- You can also use an electric razor for a wet or dry shave. Be careful or you will make small scratches. Using a razor is difficult for some areas of the face, such as the chin.
- However, hair can grow back quickly after shaving. It is estimated that the feathers can reappear between a few hours to a few days.
Step 3. Try threading
Threading is becoming increasingly popular as a way to remove facial hair. This method is often used to shape eyebrows, but threading can also be used to remove hair on other parts of the face.
- The beautician will twist a cotton thread around the hair in the area to be cleaned, then pull out a row of feathers at a time.
- One of the advantages of threading compared to waxing is that it does not cause inflammation in sensitive skin. The hair will grow back after two weeks.
- A number of salons now offer threading services. Look for the information in the phone book or ask directly to the salon you subscribe to.
Step 4. Use a laser
Laser hair removal is very useful for getting rid of unwanted hair. The laser shoots heat and light directly into the hair roots and after some time stops hair growth.
- It takes about 9 months or so to get the final results, but you get the benefits worth it. At first using a laser seems more expensive, but in the end you end up saving money. One downside of using lasers is that the procedure can be very painful. But on the plus side, the hair will not grow again forever.
- You may need to do this procedure several times to completely destroy the hair. Laser hair treatment is perfect for light skinned people with dark hair.
Step 5. Try electrolysis
Electrolysis must be done in a salon. The electrolysis process is time consuming and tedious so it is best done on small areas, such as above the lips.
- Electrolysis is performed with a small needle. An electric current is applied to each hair root, one at a time, to permanently destroy the hair.
- White or blonde hair can be treated with electrolysis, unlike laser procedures which are more suitable for dark hair and light skin. You need to do several treatments until the hair is completely gone.
Method 3 of 4: Finding Natural Herbs
Step 1. Use a gelatin peeler
You can make a gelatin mask at home to remove unwanted facial hair. All you need is 1 tablespoon of unflavored gelatin, 2-3 tablespoons of milk, 3-4 drops of lime juice or 1-2 drops of lavender essential oil.
- Mix all the ingredients together, then heat in the microwave for 15 seconds. Apply the mixture on your face, and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, peel it off the skin.
- Make sure you don't apply the mixture to the area near your eyebrows or eyes. When you peel off the mask, unwanted hairs (and blackheads) come off with the mask.
Step 2. Make a lemon/orange or apricot/honey scrubbing cream
Fruit-based scrubbing creams can help you remove unwanted facial hair without the harshness of chemical products.
- To make lemon/orange scrubbing cream, mix 1 teaspoon of the following ingredients: orange powder and lemon zest, almond flour, and oat flour. Add 2 teaspoons of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of rose water. Mix these ingredients to form a paste. Apply the paste to your face and leave it on for 5-8 minutes. Rub the paste into the skin in small circular motions. Then rinse your face with water. You need to do this procedure 2-3 times a week to see the results.
- To make apricot scouring cream, grind cup of dried apricots in a blender until they become a powder. Then add 1 teaspoon of honey. Apply on the face for 5-10 minutes. Rub it into your skin in small circular motions, then rinse with warm water. You also need to use this scrubbing cream 2-3 times a week to see the difference.
Step 3. Make a paste of turmeric
In India, turmeric has long been used to improve the appearance of the skin. You can make your own paste from this turmeric.
- You only need 1-2 teaspoons of turmeric and milk or water. Mix the ingredients until it forms a paste. Apply to face and leave for 15-20 minutes. Wait for it to dry. Then wash your face with warm water.
- This paste is perfect for people who have fine facial hair. If the coat is thicker, you can add oat flour to the pasta.
Step 4. Try the egg mask
Another natural remedy for removing facial hair can be made from eggs. You will need 1 egg (white only), 1 tablespoon sugar and tablespoon cornstarch.
- Beat all the ingredients until it turns into a paste. Apply the paste to your face, and let it dry. The paste will turn into a thin mask.
- Pull off the mask firmly, and you can see the hair coming off with the mask.
Method 4 of 4: Preventing Facial Hair Growth
Step 1. Drink spearmint tea
Spearmint tea affects the amount of male hormones in your body, so if you drink it often enough, you will notice less facial hair growth.
- Studies published in scientific journals such as Phytotherapy Research found that women who drank spearmint tea experienced a decrease in the hormone testosterone (male hormone) flowing in their bloodstream. With a decrease in the hormone testosterone, it results in reduced unwanted hair growth.
- Consume 2 cups of spearmint tea for at least 5 days a week.
Step 2. Use a hair growth inhibiting cream
Visit your dermatologist for a prescription for hair growth inhibiting cream. Hair growth inhibitor products are made from plant-based ingredients that can change the structure of the hair follicle so that the hair that grows becomes thin and soft and in the end does not grow at all.
- Apply the cream on the area of your face that you want to remove hair from. Let the cream sit on your skin. Follow the directions on the product to find out the dosage.
- Hair growth inhibitors can be used in conjunction with other hair reduction methods such as threading, waxing, and tweezers.
- New results will be seen after 4-6 months. You have to spend around IDR 500 thousand or more for a hair growth inhibiting cream that can be used for about 2 months.
Step 3. Make a drink from the herb black cohosh, although there isn't enough evidence for a long-term effect
This herb can slow the growth of facial hair. In addition to brewing it into tea, you can buy it in capsule form. Just like other natural herbs, you should consult a doctor first.
- To make the tea, you will need 20g of dried black cohosh root, 4 cups of water and 1 teaspoon of honey. Bring the water and roots to a boil, after boiling reduce the heat and cook for 30 minutes. Then strain.
- Add honey to the mixture. Drink three times a day. You need to store the ingredients in the refrigerator. Higher doses of tea can cause side effects, and this tea is not recommended for people with liver disease or cancer, so it's best to see a doctor before trying this remedy.
Step 4. Treat hormones
Sometimes the hair grows more due to hormonal problems, such as during menopause. This condition must be diagnosed by a doctor.
- Sometimes doctors will prescribe birth control pills to help treat problems like this. Some medical conditions can cause facial hair growth, such as polycystic ovary syndrome.
- Eat foods that contain phytoestrogens. If you eat foods that contain these ingredients, estrogen imbalance can be cured, but again you should consult a doctor. Higher amounts of estrogen can slow down hair growth. Locorice, alfalfa, fennel and flaxseed are natural products that contain phytoestrogens.
- Basically, phytoestrogens mimic the role of estrogen in the body.
Warning
- Try the depilatory on a small patch of skin before applying it to a larger area to make sure it doesn't irritate the skin. Depilatory drugs emit a strong chemical odor; can cause skin burns; and cause peeling, blistering and allergic reactions.
- Waxing can be painful and may cause irritation and/or bleeding. Carefully follow the instructions given on the packaging of the home waxing kit you buy.
- Shaving can cause ingrown hairs. The skin is also at risk of being scratched. Use shaving lotion or gel to reduce irritation.
- One more point to stress: See a doctor if you think you have a hormonal imbalance.
