Many people want to have thick hair, but for some, thick and fluffy curls are a big problem. Hair thickness can be reduced with proper hair cutting techniques. Treat frizzy hair by moisturizing your hair with shampoo and conditioner regularly. Straighten thick curls with a hairdryer and flat iron to keep them from growing!
Step
Method 1 of 4: Treating Hair with Shampoo and Conditioner
Step 1. Choose the right hair care products
Look for shampoos that reduce hair thickness naturally and conditioners that make your hair less frizzy, making it look neater. Opt for products that contain natural moisturizers, such as avocado or almond oil, to keep your hair moisturized, not fluffy, and neat.
Step 2. Use shampoo every 2-4 days
Shampoo removes the hair's natural oils produced by the scalp. Instead of washing your hair every day, prevent your hair from growing by washing it every 2-4 days because for those of you with thick hair, spreading the natural oils from your hair to the ends of your hair shaft takes a lot of time. Apply shampoo to the scalp, but not to the ends of the hair.
Step 3. Apply conditioner on the hair shaft evenly
Use conditioner after every wash. Apply conditioner to the hair shaft, but avoid the scalp. In addition to using a rinsed conditioner, use a conditioner that doesn't need to be rinsed!
Method 2 of 4: Drying Hair
Step 1. Squeeze the hair gently to remove any remaining water
Dry your hair using a towel. Do not rub wet hair with a towel to absorb the water as this is what causes hair to grow! Instead of wrapping wet hair in a bath towel, use a soft cotton T-shirt, cotton pillowcase, or microfiber towel.
Tip:
cotton and microfiber towels are finer than bath towels so they don't damage thick, still wet hair.
Step 2. Let the hair dry by itself
To shorten the drying time, let your hair dry on its own. Wait until the moisture content in the hair reaches 50% so that the hair is not exposed to the heat for too long because the hair dryer reduces the humidity so that the hair grows and looks thicker.
Step 3. Protect hair from high temperature
While your hair is still slightly damp, apply an anti-frizz cream to keep your hair from growing. Before using a hairdryer, spray on a hair protection product from heat to prevent damage to the hair.
Step 4. Divide the hair into 5 sections
Use a comb to divide the hair into 5 sections: 1 section at the top of the head, 2 sections at the back, 2 sections above the ears. Use bobby pins to secure each section from unraveling.
Step 5. Dry your hair with a hairdryer
First of all, dry the hair on top of the head. Lower your hair to your forehead and place a round brush at the roots of your hair. Gently pull the brush toward the ends of your hair while spraying hot air from the hairdryer along the hair shaft. Do it repeatedly until the hair is dry. Repeat this step to dry the hair above the ears and at the back of the head. Apply an anti-frizz serum or cream to prevent frizz.
Use a variety of products to style your hair
Waxes, pomades and anti-frizz serums make the hair shaft softer and heavier so that the thickness of the hair is reduced. The friction caused by the movement of the hair makes the hair shaft stiff and lifted. Using the right products when styling your hair makes each strand and the entire hair tighter together.
Method 3 of 4: Straightening Hair
Step 1. Heat a hair straightener
Set the temperature of the straightener to between 170°C and 200°C and wait for it to heat up. Use a high-temperature iron if your hair is very thick or stiff. Use a low temperature if your hair is thin and fine.
Warning:
use a hair straightener with a low temperature so that the hair is not damaged.
Step 2. Protect hair from high temperatures
While heating the straightener, spray on a hair protection product to prevent hair damage when exposed to heat.
Step 3. Straighten the hair
The final step to reduce hair thickness is to straighten the hair. Make sure your hair is dry before straightening it. Use a hair straightener to get very straight or smooth hair shafts according to the following instructions:
- To get a very straight hair shaft, take a strand of hair 1-2 cm thick. If your hair is very thick or stiff, reduce the thickness. Start straightening your hair from the bottom layer by pinning a lock of hair and then pulling the iron slowly all the way to the ends of your hair. Repeat this step a few times before straightening the next lock of hair.
- If you want slick hair, divide your hair into large sections. Pin a section of hair firmly with a hair straightener and then pull it slowly until the ends of the hair so that the heat flows into the hair, but only a little of the hair shaft is exposed to the heater. Do this step for each section of hair.
- Use a hairbrush to style your hair, not a comb!
Method 4 of 4: Trimming, Thinning, and Trimming the Ends
Step 1. Choose a style that makes your hair less thick
Make sure the length of the hair does not make the hair fluffy. Instead of shortening your hair in a bob so that your hair looks thick, choose a cropped style, such as a pixie cut or slightly longer to slightly below the shoulders.
Tip:
The long bob is the perfect style for thick, fluffy hair!
Step 2. Choose a long model with layers
Thick hair that is difficult to manage or wavy will reduce its thickness if given a layer. However, make sure your hair is long enough because short hair that is layered will expand and make it look thicker! In addition to reducing hair thickness, long hair with layers makes thick hair shafts not stiff.
Step 3. Reduce hair thickness
Have your stylist thin your hair using serrated scissors or do it yourself at home. Before cutting your hair, make sure your hair is dry. Divide the hair into sections each the size of a fist. Hold a section of hair and then thin it using serrated scissors to thin the hair starting from the middle of the hair shaft to 1 cm from the end of the hair. Open the scissors and use them to thin the hair section by section. After thinning, comb the freshly cut hair a few times to find out the results. Do this a few times before thinning the rest of your hair.
- If you want to thin your hair at home, buy serrated scissors online or at a beauty salon supply store. These scissors help you thin hair safely.
- Do not thin the hair starting from the roots of the hair because the result may be too thin. Instead, start at the center of the hair shaft and work your way up to the roots if needed.
- Thin all sections of hair evenly. Find out the results by combing each section of hair and then cutting back the thickest part.
Step 4. Trim the ends of the hair regularly
Hair that has not been cut for a long time will branch and break easily so that the ends of the hair accumulate. Trim the ends of the hair regularly by seeing a hairdresser every 2-4 months.
