Home spa treatments can be the right choice to relax after a busy and tiring day. Most people may only focus on taking care of their skin or nails, but hair also needs attention and care! If your hair is dry, rough, tangled, or damaged, you may need to give it extra moisture. A hair spa treatment at home can be a great way to relax and give your hair the moisture it needs. After that, you may be surprised to find that your hair is much smoother than before!
Step
Part 1 of 3: Massaging the Scalp
Step 1. Prepare the oil
Warm 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 ml) of coconut or olive oil in a small bowl. You can use the microwave or stove to warm up the oil. However, be careful not to overheat the oil. The temperature of the oil should be warm enough and comfortable to the touch. If you want a more luxurious spa treatment, try one of the mixtures below:
- 1 teaspoon each of the following ingredients: almond oil, coconut oil, olive oil, and sesame oil.
- 3 tablespoons (45 ml) coconut oil, 2 tablespoons (30 ml) olive oil, and 4-5 drops vitamin E oil.
Step 2. Massage the oil into your scalp from roots to ends for 5 minutes
Massage all the oil into your hair from roots to tips. This massage will also improve blood circulation in the scalp.
Step 3. Wrap a warm, damp towel around your head
Wet a clean towel with warm water. Squeeze so that it is not too wet, but still damp. Wrap a towel around your head covering your hair. Attach hairpins to hold the towel in position if necessary.
Step 4. Let the towel cover your head for 5-6 minutes
The heat on the towel will trap the oil and open the hair follicles. That way, the oil will be more easily absorbed and nourish the hair and scalp.
If your hair is very dry, leave the towel on for 15-20 minutes
Step 5. Wash with lukewarm water
Use a small amount of mild shampoo to wash off the oil. You can also use conditioner again if your hair is really dry. However, the hair mask in the next step should be enough to nourish the hair.
Part 2 of 3: Using a Mask
Step 1. Define and prepare a mask
You can use any hair mask you like. Commercial masks sold in stores may also be used. However, a homemade mask would have been better. You can use your own mask recipe or use one of the mask recipes in the next section.
Double the number of ingredients in the recipe if you have thick or long hair
Step 2. Apply the mask to the hair, starting at the roots
If necessary, part your hair into sections first. Use a wide-toothed comb to spread the mask all over your hair. This step can be very messy. So, it's best to wear a towel or hair dye coat over your shoulders.
Step 3. Cover your hair with a shower cap
If you have very long hair, make a loose bun first and then pin it up. Covering your hair with a shower cap will not only keep you clean, it will trap heat from your scalp and make the mask even more effective.
Step 4. Wait for 15-30 minutes
The time you have to wait is determined by the mask you use. So, make sure to follow the instructions for use properly.
Step 5. Wash the mask off the hair
Wash off the mask with a mild shampoo and lukewarm water. Continue to apply conditioner then rinse. If the mask you are using has different cleaning instructions, follow them.
Leave the conditioner for a few minutes before rinsing it off. That way, your hair will become softer
Step 6. Pat hair dry
Let the hair dry by itself. Do not use a hairdryer which can cause damage to the hair.
Part 3 of 3: Hair Mask Recipe
Step 1. Use a banana and olive oil to make a simple intensive conditioning mask
Mix the bananas with 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of olive oil in a blender. Massage into hair and scalp, then leave for 30 minutes. Clean the mask with shampoo.
Step 2. Mix honey and yogurt to make a simple intensive conditioning mask
Mix 2 tablespoons (30 grams) of plain yogurt and 1 tablespoon (25 grams) of honey. Apply the mask to your hair and scalp, then wait for 15-20 minutes. Remove the mask from the hair with shampoo. Apply conditioner to the ends of your hair when you're done, if necessary.
Step 3. Make a pumpkin-intensive conditioning mask suitable for all hair types
Mix 1 cup (225 grams) of plain pumpkin puree and 1-2 tablespoons (25-50 grams) of honey. Apply the mask to your hair and scalp then leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Wipe off hair when you're done.
- You may not need to use the entire mask.
- Use the rest as a face mask.
- Don't use the "pumpkin pie" porridge because it's not the same.
Step 4. Make a honey mask to treat damaged and dry hair
Pour cup (175 grams) of honey into a small bowl. Add 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 ml) of olive oil and 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 grams) of avocado or egg yolk. Apply the mask on the hair, wait 20 minutes then rinse with warm water.
Step 5. Try a moisturizing hair mask from avocado as needed
Place half an avocado that has been peeled and seeded into a blender. Add one of the optional ingredients from the list below and blend the mask until smooth. Apply the mask to your hair and leave it on for 15 minutes. Remove the mask from the hair with shampoo. Repeat the use of this mask once a month for best results.
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) argan oil, sour cream, or egg yolk for added moisture
- 10 drops rosemary essential oil for dry scalp
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) apple cider vinegar to remove product build-up
Step 6. Use eggs to make a simple moisturizing mask as needed
Pour cup (120 ml) of egg white, yolk, or whole egg into a cup. Beat the eggs until the color is uniform then apply on the hair. Leave it for 20 minutes then wash it off with cold water. The following are the ingredients you should use (and the frequency of use) according to your hair type:
- Normal hair: about 2 whole eggs, once a month
- Oily hair: about 4 egg whites, twice a month
- Dry hair: about 6 egg yolks, once a month.
Tips
- Clean your bathroom before doing a spa treatment. A clean bathroom is much more comfortable than a dirty bathroom!
- Dim the lights and light a candle instead. Turn on the music you like.
- You can do this treatment once a month.
- Some types of masks can be used more than once a month. If you have a mask like that, just a mask without the need for a spa treatment.
- Save time by preparing the mask while wrapping your hair in a towel.
- Avoid using hot water to rinse your hair as it can be very damaging to your hair.
- You can make a coconut oil spray by putting coconut oil and water in an old perfume bottle or spray bottle. Shake this mixture before use. Spray all over the hair 2-3 times a day.
- Note, if you don't have liquid coconut oil, melt the coconut oil first, then pour it into the water.
