Whether you're a cat lover or not, you're bound to get irritated when cats come and litter areas where they shouldn't be. Maybe the pussy comes and soils the garden plot, your favorite plant, or the living room couch. However, if he starts scratching or urinating in an unwanted area, he will usually quickly get used to scratching or urinating in that area. Luckily, there are natural home repellent mixtures you can make to keep your pussy away from "off-limits" areas. Strong-smelling ingredients such as citron (orange) peel and oil, vinegar, citronella oil, pepper, and garlic can keep cats away because cats don't like the smell. Most repellent mixtures like this can be used both indoors and outdoors. However, it's a good idea to test the mixture on a cloth or other soft material to make sure it doesn't stain.
Ingredients
Cat Repellent Mix of Essential Oils
- 2 drops of lime essential oil
- 2 drops of wild orange essential oil
- 2 drops lavender essential oil

- Hand soap (liquid)

- Use a 1:1:1 ratio for each ingredient
Citrus Cat Repellent Mix
- 500 ml water
- 100 grams of orange peel, lime, lime, and/or tangerine
- 2 tablespoons (10 ml) lime juice
- Dishwashing soap with lime scent
Citronella Oil Cat Repellent Blend
- 20 drops of citronella oil
- 180 ml water
Garlic, Pepper and Lime Cat Repellent Mix
- 1 teaspoon black pepper powder
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 1 clove white bottom, puree
- 3-4 drops of lime essential oil

Method 1 of 5: Making a Cat Repellent Mix from Essential Oils
Step 1. Put the essential oil in a spray bottle
For this mixture, you will need a glass spray bottle with a volume of (at least) 60 milliliters. Add 2 drops of lime essential oil, 2 drops of wild orange essential oil, and 2 drops of lavender essential oil into the bottle.
- The cat's sense of smell is more sensitive than the human sense of smell. Therefore, essential oils with strong odors (eg citron and lavender oils) can repel cats. You can replace lime, wild orange, and lavender essential oils with lime, peppermint, and/or eucalyptus essential oils if you prefer.
- It is important that you use a spray bottle made of glass because the essential oils in the mixture spoil more quickly when the mixture is stored in a plastic bottle.
Step 2. Fill the bottle with water and shake until the ingredients are evenly mixed
Once you have added the essential oil to the bottle, fill the bottle with enough water. Close the bottle tightly, and shake the bottle to make sure the oil mixes with the water.
You don't have to use filtered or purified water. You can still use regular tap water
Step 3. Spray the mixture on the desired area
Once the water and essential oil are evenly mixed, spray the repellent mixture on areas where cats are not allowed to enter. This mixture is also effective at keeping cats away from indoor plants.
Be careful when spraying the mixture on carpets, curtains, or other fabrics, as essential oils can stain the fabric. Therefore, do the test first on an inconspicuous area to make sure the mixture will not damage or stain the fabric
Method 2 of 5: Making a Cat Repellent Mix of Vinegar
Step 1. Put vinegar and water in a spray bottle
For this mixture, you will need a spray bottle as the application medium. Pour the vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio into the bottle, then shake the bottle quickly to mix the two ingredients.
- Use white vinegar for this mixture.
- You can use tap water, filtered water, purified water, or bottled mineral water.
- You can also use a plastic or glass spray bottle.
Step 2. Pour the soap into the bottle and shake the mixture until all the ingredients are combined
After mixing the vinegar and water, add an equal proportion of liquid hand soap to the bottle. Shake the bottle quickly to make sure the soap mixes evenly with the vinegar mixture.
You can use any type of hand soap. However, soap with a clear formula is more effective
Step 3. Spray or wipe the mixture on the desired area
After all the ingredients are evenly mixed, spray or rub the mixture on areas that are not allowed by cats. You can spray it directly from the bottle or spray it on a washcloth first, then wipe the desired area.
You can use this mixture to keep cats away, both indoors and outdoors
Method 3 of 5: Making a Cat Repellent Mix from Citrus
Step 1. Bring the water to a boil
Pour 500 ml of water into a medium sized saucepan. Heat the water over medium/high heat until the water boils. This process may take about 5-7 minutes.
Since the water will need to be brought to a boil later, you can use tap water to make this mixture
Step 2. Add and boil the citron (orange) rind
Once the water boils, add 100g of orange zest, lime, lime, and/or tangerine to the pot. Reduce the heat and boil the rind for 20 minutes.
- Cats don't like the smell of citrus, so a combination of orange, lime, lime, and/or tangerine peels of 100 grams can be an effective ingredient in making a cat repellent mixture.
- If the mixture starts to boil again, reduce the heat.
Step 3. Cool the mixture, then transfer it to a spray bottle

If the citron rind is large, strain the rind so that the mixture can be poured easily into the bottle
Step 4. Add the lime juice and dish soap to the mixture, then shake the bottle to mix all the ingredients evenly
After pouring the mixture into a spray bottle, add 2 tablespoons of lime juice and a drop or two of lime-scented dish soap. Shake the bottle to make sure all the ingredients are evenly mixed.
- You can replace lime juice with lime juice or orange juice. However, make sure you use freshly squeezed fruit.
- You can use any clear dish soap, but formulas with a lime scent are more effective because cats don't like the smell of citrus.
Step 5. Apply the mixture to “no” areas for cats in the house
After the ingredients are evenly mixed, spray the mixture on areas where cats are not allowed to go. You can spray it on floors, walls, and even furniture.
For safety's sake, for upholstered items it's a good idea to test the mixture in a less visible area. Tests are carried out to ensure the ingredients contained in the mixture will not damage the fabric
Method 4 of 5: Making a Cat Repellent Mix from Citronella Oil
Step 1. Fill the spray bottle with water

- You can use tap water, filtered water, purified water, and bottled mineral water.
- Use a spray bottle made of glass for the effect to last long. In addition, the volatile oil content in the mixture is more easily damaged if the mixture is stored in a plastic bottle.
Step 2. Add citronella oil and shake the bottle

If you want to spray the citronella mixture on an area your cat has used to urinate, it's important that you clean the area first before spraying the citronella mixture
Method 5 of 5: Making a Cat Repellent Mix of Garlic, Black Pepper, and Lime
Step 1. Mix black pepper, mustard and cinnamon in a spray bottle
For this mixture, you will need a glass spray bottle with a volume of (at least) 60 milliliters. Put 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of dry mustard, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder in a jar.
You can substitute cayenne pepper powder for black pepper powder if you prefer
Step 2. Add essential oil and garlic
Once you've added the spices to the jar, add a clove of crushed garlic. After that, add 3-4 drops of lime essential oil, and stir the ingredients carefully until they are evenly mixed.
- You can replace one clove of garlic with gram of garlic powder.
- Lime, wild orange, or tangerine essential oils can be good substitutes for lime essential oils.
Step 3. Fill the bottle with water and mix the ingredients thoroughly
Once all the spices and oil are in the bottle, fill the bottle with water. Shake the bottle quickly so that all the ingredients are evenly mixed.
You can use tap water for this mixture
Step 4. Use the mixture on the outdoor area
After all the ingredients are evenly mixed, spray the areas outdoors that are not allowed by cats. This mixture is effective at keeping cats away, especially away from garden plots, bushes, and other plants.
You can also use the mixture to keep cats away from indoor plants
Tips
- You can scatter pieces of orange peel in the garden to keep cats away. Orange peels can keep cats away, without harming plants or soil.
