A papaya milkshake is a sweet and refreshing treat, especially if you use fresh papaya. You can adjust the level of sweetness, thickness, and portion size of the milkshake according to taste. You will get a milkshake with the following ingredients. However, that doesn't mean it's the only way to make a papaya milkshake. Once you've got all the ingredients, you can make a milkshake in just ten minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 cup ripe papaya, cut into small pieces
- 1 cup cold milk
- 3-4 ice cubes
- 1 tbsp honey or sugar (or to taste)
- A pinch of black pepper (optional)
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla (optional)
- 2 scoops vanilla ice cream (optional)
Step
Method 1 of 3: Selecting Materials
Step 1. Use ripe papaya
Taste the papaya before you use it to make a milkshake, just to be sure, even if you bought it ripe. Here are three easy ways to tell if a papaya is ripe without cutting it:
- Look at the color. Unripe papaya has green skin. Ripe papayas have skin with red, orange, and yellow patches. Some types of papaya are yellow when ripe, and some are red; the important thing is that the fruit is not completely green.
- Squeeze the papaya slowly. If the papaya is ripe, the skin will feel a little soft. If the papaya is unripe, the fruit will feel hard and stiff. If the papaya is overripe, the skin will loosen and the fruit will start to feel lumpy.
- Smell the papaya aroma near the stem area. You will smell a sweet and pleasant aroma; not a bad smell or too sweet. This method will probably be the most effective once you are familiar with the natural aroma of papaya.
Step 2. Try using local papaya
Freshly picked local papaya is the freshest and tastiest papaya. Papaya grows in Hawaii, Costa Rica, Mexico, Australia, South Africa, Ghana, India, Peru, and several other countries. If this fruit grows in your area, pick it straight from the tree or be sure to buy a ripe papaya. If this fruit doesn't grow in your area, try selecting fruit imported from the country closest to your location:
- Try Hawaiian Sunrise and Sunset papayas. This small to medium sized papaya with red-orange variety is known as the sweetest papaya on the market. Sunrise papaya has a shallow seed cavity, so the seeds are easier to remove than other types of papaya.
- Try the Kapaho papaya. This papaya grows in Hawaii and Costa Rica, and is known to be small to medium in size with a sweet yellow flesh.
- Try the Mexican papaya. Mexican papayas are larger than Kapaho papayas, and the flesh can be red or yellow in color. Mexican papaya varieties are not as sweet as Hawaiian papayas, and some say they have a bland or bitter taste. Yellow Mexican papayas are sweeter than red ones, but not as sweet as Hawaiian papayas.
- Try the Australian variety papaya. The Bettina and Pearson varieties grow in Queensland; This papaya is large with sweet flesh. Sunnybank Papaya and Guinea Gold are grown in Western Australia, and both are known for their yellow flesh.
Step 3. Use honey or sugar to sweeten the milkshake
Sweeteners help liven up the flavor of the milkshake if you use bitter or bland papaya. Use a tablespoon of honey/sugar, or more, or less, depending on how sweet you want it. If in doubt, you don't need to add anything. Keep in mind that some varieties of papaya already have a very sweet taste.
You don't need to limit yourself to just using honey and sugar. Use your favorite sweetener, be it nectar, Stevia extract, etc
Step 4. Use cold milk
You can use whole milk, almond milk, soy milk, or any other milk, but keep in mind that the thickness of the milk will have a direct impact on the consistency of the milkshake. If you use whole milk, you will end up with a thick milkshake. If you use nonfat milk, or non-lactose milk such as rice milk, you will end up with a liquid milkshake. You can balance the thickness with a scoop of ice cream or yogurt, extra ice cubes, or more papaya. Try several ingredients and find a combination that suits you.
Step 5. Use ice cubes
Ice cubes will make a runny milkshake thicker. Use ice cubes if you are using liquid milk and the ice will also add a little crunch to the milkshake. Use 3-4 ice cubes to start. Add more if you want to add crunch, or add some if you're just trying to thicken the milkshake a little. The blender should have no problem crushing the ice cubes.
Step 6. Consider adding a little ground black pepper
Black pepper can add an aromatic touch to a milkshake, and some people like the spice taste combined with the sweet aroma of papaya. Be careful not to add too much, unless you really like pepper. You can mix pepper into the milkshake mixture, or simply sprinkle it over the top of the milkshake.
Method 2 of 3: Preparing Papaya
Step 1. Wash the papaya
The skin of the fruit is not edible, but it is still important to wash the surface of the fruit before you eat it. If the skin of the fruit is contaminated with bacteria or chemicals, then you may be able to infect the inside of the fruit when you cut it before washing it.
Step 2. Put the ripe papaya in the refrigerator until it cools down
Although papaya can be eaten at room temperature, it tastes best when it is cold. Place whole or half pieces in the refrigerator to prepare them. You can put the papaya in the freezer to cool it faster, but keep in mind that you will need to thaw it briefly before using it. Once you are ready to make the milkshake, remove the papaya from the refrigerator.
Step 3. Place the papaya and slice it about 7.5 cm from the bottom
You will see the seed cavity in the center of the fruit. If you can't see it, slice it a little more.
Step 4. Remove the seeds
Hold the papaya over a bowl. Use a spoon to remove the seeds and the sticky membrane that holds them together.
Step 5. Peel the papaya
Stand the papaya using the side you cut earlier as the base. Slowly, carefully slice the papaya skin downwards. Try to leave the skin on the top of the fruit so you can hold the fruit without touching the inside. Put the papaya back and remove the remaining skin.
Step 6. Slice the papaya
Cut off the top of the papaya in the area around the stem. Slice into halves of the same length.
Step 7. Remove any remaining seeds and lint
Turn each half of the papaya so that you can see the seed cavities. Use a spoon to remove any remaining seeds. Remove the white fiber for a smoother milkshake, although this is not required.
Step 8. Cut the papaya into small pieces using a sharp knife
Papaya slices don't have to be regular or the same size. The smaller the pieces of fruit, the smoother the milkshake will be; but don't feel burdened by this. As long as the blades in the blender can crush the papaya and mix it with the other ingredients, you'll have a good milkshake.
Method 3 of 3: Making Milkshakes
Step 1. First of all, mix papaya with honey
Place 1 cup of chopped papaya (per serving) in a blender along with 1 tablespoon of honey. This will probably increase the consistency of the papaya extract before you add the milk. Turn on the blender until the papaya becomes smooth.
Step 2. Pour the milk into the blender
You can add more milk to adjust the consistency of the milkshake. If you add or replace milk with ice cream or yogurt, you can add it right now.
Step 3. Add sweetener
1 tablespoon honey, sugar, or other sweetener is enough to sweeten the milkshake. If you're not sure, set aside the honey/sugar until you've combined all the other ingredients. You can add more ingredients to improve the taste.
Step 4. Add other additional ingredients, for flavoring
Consider adding 1 1/2 vanilla for a sweeter milkshake, or a dash of black pepper for a spicier milkshake. If you're not sure, you can add additional seasoning after you've finished mixing all the ingredients and tasting the basic milkshake.
Step 5. Make the milkshake
Mix all ingredients for 1-2 minutes, or until all ingredients are smooth. Turn off the blender once the texture of the milkshake is to your liking.
Step 6. Add ice cubes
If you're adding ice, add it after the milkshake is pureed, then turn on the blender for 30 seconds. This will ensure that the ice cubes will blend into the milkshake, without losing its texture.
Step 7. Taste the papaya milkshake before you pour it
You can drink it straight away, or you can choose to add more ingredients to enhance the taste.
- If the milkshake isn't sweet enough, you can add honey, sugar, or ice cream to taste. If you are using the sweet papaya variety, then you can simply add more papaya.
- If the milkshake is too sweet, you can add ice or milk to neutralize the taste. Consider adding black pepper, to give it a bit of spiciness.
- If the milkshake is too thick, you can add more milk to melt it.
- If the milkshake is too runny, you can add ice cubes, ice cream, or more papaya to thicken it up.
Tips
- You can also add yogurt to a milkshake.
- Remember that you don't need to add ice if the papaya is frozen.
- The amount of papaya used may vary depending on the amount of milkshake you want to make.
- You shouldn't add too much sugar or reduce it to too little.
Warning
- Be careful not to cut your fingers while slicing the papaya. Use a safe method and do it slowly.
- Observe safety instructions when using a blender. Make sure the blender is tightly closed before you turn it on, and don't leave the blender on while you're doing other things. Make sure the blender is off and the blades have stopped turning before you put your hands or other equipment in it.
