Garlic bread is one of the most popular foods and can be made using various types of bread. To make onion bread the traditional method, you can use slices of bread such as a baguette (French bread) or thinly sliced crusty Italian bread. Onion bread is usually enjoyed with pasta and soups, but you can also eat it with pizza, seafood, and other dishes. Its delicious taste will enrich your culinary experience.
In this article, you can find two recipes for onion bread: one uses butter and the other uses olive oil.
Ingredients
Recipe with butter:
- 1 baguette
- Garlic
- 200 gr butter
- 3 tablespoons (7.5 g) parsley, finely chopped
- Salt and black pepper (to taste)
Recipe with olive oil:
- Bread sticks (French bread would be better)
- Garlic, minimum 2 cloves or as much as desired
- Olive oil
- Garlic powder or paste
Step
Method 1 of 3: Onion Bread with Butter
Step 1. Preheat the oven
Set the oven temperature to 175 C.
Step 2. Make the garlic butter
Take a small bowl, spoon the butter into the bowl.
- Place a few cloves of garlic in the onion crusher, press the handle down firmly and place the minced garlic into the bowl. Continue this process until all the garlic has been crushed.
- Add chopped parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Stir until well blended.
Step 3. Slice and apply
Place the baguette on a cutting board and make diagonal slices about 2-3 cm thick, but don't cut the bread all the way through.
- Make a gap between each slice.
- Add a spoonful of garlic butter, and smooth it over the entire surface of the bread with a bread knife.
- Finally, spread the remaining butter over the top of the baguette.
Step 4. Wrap the baguette in aluminum foil
Unroll the aluminum foil and tear a piece large enough to wrap the baguette. Place the onion patties in the center of the aluminum foil.
Wrap the onion bread. Fold the ends tightly
Step 5. Bake the bread
Place the baguette in the center of the oven and bake for 10 minutes. Flip, and bake for another 10 minutes. Remove the baguette from the oven after the baking time is complete.
Step 6. Serve
Unwrap the baguette, cut each slice of bread into pieces, and serve.
Method 2 of 3: Onion Bread with Olive Oil
Step 1. Choose the type of bread you like
French bread (long buns/ baguettes) is best, but thicker breads can also be used as long as they have a large enough soft surface.
Step 2. Make a mixture of garlic and olive oil
Take a small bowl, mix the finely chopped garlic and olive oil, and let it sit for a few minutes.
Step 3. Cut the bread into slices but don't break it
Use a brush to apply the olive oil mixture to the bread.
Step 4. Sprinkle garlic powder
Don't sprinkle too much garlic powder, just coat the surface thinly, don't let the garlic powder fall when flipping the bread.
Step 5. Bake the bread
Wrap the bread in aluminum foil, and place the bread in a toaster or regular oven on a cake pan, then bake at 180 C. Bake for 10 minutes or until bread is lightly browned.
Step 6. Serve
Unwrap the bread, and cut each slice until broken, then serve.
Method 3 of 3: Variations
Step 1. Consider varying the mixture of garlic and butter or olive oil as follows:
- Add fresh herbs to the mixture. Finely chop the leaves. Or, mix dried leaf spices to taste.
- Sprinkle the parmesan cheese into the garlic butter. In this way, the taste of the cheese will be stronger.
- Use half the butter/olive oil used in the second method above for a better toasted onion.
- Try sprinkling garlic powder or chili powder for a new flavor.
- Sprinkle freshly ground pepper over the garlic butter or oil mixture.
Step 2. Make a delicious bruschetta
Spread the olive oil and garlic mixture over the bread slices, then sprinkle the chopped onions and tomatoes over the bread. Add grated parmesan cheese if you like.
Step 3. To make Spanish toast, toast some white bread (cut the bread to the size you want)
Cut the garlic in half, and grate it over the toast. Then cut the tomatoes in half and grate them on toast. Drizzle the olive oil and sprinkle with a little salt and pepper. Very delicious eaten alone or with additional slices of cheese or tomatoes!
Tips
- If you don't have garlic, use garlic powder.
- This recipe is enough for 2 or 3 people. Double or triple the ingredients to make more dishes.
- Recipes with olive oil are perfect for people who can't eat dairy. Make sure that the bread is also dairy-free.
Warning
- Take the usual precautions when using the oven to avoid burning your fingers/hands. Carefully open the aluminum foil as steam will escape and the inside of the bread will be very hot to the first touch.
- Be warned that there are people who are allergic to garlic or don't like it. Make sure you ask your guests about it before serving onion bread at dinner. It would be nice if you also provide plain bread or bread seasoned with spices for guests with cases like this.
- The baking sheet will be very hot when you remove it from the oven. So make sure you place it on a heat-resistant surface until it cools down and use cooking gloves to transfer it.
