Smiling with eyes called a “Duchenne smile” or “smizing,” is the most sincere type of smile. When you use your eyes instead of just your mouth, that smile has the power to charm other people. The risky thing about smiling with your eyes is that it's really hard to fake it. when you smile with your eyes, you really feel happy. Thinking good things about smiling can help you appear more genuine and when you can actually do it, you can smile with just your eyes. See Step 1 below to learn more about how to do this.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Practice Smiling
Step 1. Learn what your genuine smile looks like
Experts have found that there are more than 50 types of smiles and the research recommends that the most sincere smile is the Duchenne smile, which is the smile that moves the eyes. The reason why this smile is more genuine is because the muscles required to smile sincerely using the eyes are involuntary. Those muscles are only used in an authentic smile, not a polite smile. Whenever you smile because something makes you happy or funny or whenever your smile expresses your true feelings, your eyes will smile along with your lips. The corners of the eyes will shrink so that the whole face looks like a full smile.
- Look at photos of you laughing casually or bursting into laughter when you see something funny, then take a selfie. Make sure you really feel happy when the photo is taken.
- Now compare photos of you smiling happily with photos of you smiling faked like jack o'lantern halloween pumpkin decorations taken for school photos. Do you see the difference that lies in the eyes?
Step 2. Feel the difference on your face
Now that you have seen the difference, think about how it feels. A genuine smile that uses the eyes and mouth usually feels easy, natural, and nice. Contrast this with a forced smile when someone says “cheese”: after a few seconds of making that expression, the facial muscles start to feel tired.
- When you identify the feeling of a smile with your eyes, try to remember it. Practice using your entire face when you smile. The more you practice, the easier it will be for you.
- Instead, remember how it felt when you weren't smiling with your eyes. When the feeling of being forced is felt on your face, then you will be able to repair your smile to make it look more sincere.
Step 3. Practice making a Duchene smile
Although a little difficult, you can do this smile by blinking a little to create a small pad under the eyes. Look in the mirror and try to do this smile. If you make wrinkles in the corners of your eyes while doing this smile, you've done it right. If you have mastered the technique of smiling with the eyes, then you will be able to use it to brighten a very secret smile or even a very slight smile.
- Every time you smile, for whatever reason, try to blink a little. Don't overdo it because your face will look confused. Just a little blink will add light to the eyes.
- Try to make eye contact when you blink to have a big impact on the person you're smiling at.
Step 4. Try smiling only with your eyes
Do you think you've mastered the classic Duchenne smile technique? Try smiling without lips. People who can actually smile with their eyes can express happiness or joy without moving their mouths. This does not mean that the mouth has to be wrinkled, but hold the position of the lips when you smile with your eyes.
- This kind of smile is great when you want to express something mysterious but playful. This smile is used when you don't want to smile too broadly and grin. Your goal is simply to be satisfied with the situation.
- You can also smile without using your mouth when you want to make a pleasant expression on your face for a long time. For example, when you're at an old board meeting and you want to look happy without looking contrived. Smiling with your eyes will make you appear approachable and positive.
Method 2 of 3: Have the Right Mindset
Step 1. Think positive things
A genuine smile comes from genuine happiness. Research into what makes people happy reveals that happiness has nothing to do with material things or great accomplishments. In other words, try to be optimistic and a real smile will appear on your face throughout the day.
- Think about who has the most genuine smile: yes, children! They don't worry like adults because life is too complicated for them. Try to follow them, relax and have fun.
- Don't force yourself to smile unless you feel truly happy. Stop pleasing other people. If you're constantly smiling to appear polite and friendly, you're working hard to control your face and not giving a Duchene smile a chance. A real smile comes from personal joy, not someone else's.
Step 2. Find a happy place for you
When you're in a situation that makes you unhappy, but you don't want to appear uncomfortable, you have to find a happy place. Think of something that makes you want to be happy, something that is sure to put a smile on your face.
This exercise will help you identify what really makes you happy. Look in the mirror and cover anything under your eyes with a handkerchief or similar object. Then, start thinking or saying the happiest memories. Smile when you do. You will notice, later your eyes will "glow" and wrinkles appear in the outer corner of the eye near the temple. That's the Duchen's smile! The thing you want most when you smile with your eyes in control is to focus on the happiest memories and then let your face do the work
Step 3. Show confidence in your smile
If you are worried about the color or shape of your teeth, protruding gums, bad breath, and so on, you will subconsciously hold back your smile, because you are embarrassed. Addressing the issues that are bothering you will help you smile more brightly and sincerely.
- Look for information to whiten teeth and get rid of bad breath to deal with these two sources of anxiety.
- If you really want to master the Duchene smile, play with your eyes too. Treat your eyebrows and apply a little eye makeup to make your eyes look attractive.
Step 4. Don't be anxious when you talk to other people
If there is an opportunity, try to live it and don't think about yourself. Look into other people's eyes and look at them seriously. If you are genuinely happy to see the person and he or she says something that pleases you, then you will naturally smile. When you are worried about your appearance, it shows in your smile. Instead of worrying about the impression you're making, let yourself be free to express yourself.
- Look at other people's smiles when you're talking. Does the person smile with his eyes? If you see the Duchenne smile on someone else's face and you know it's genuine, then you'll feel happy and at ease having a conversation.
- On the other hand, if someone's smile looks fake, then sincerity will be difficult to create. If you want to appear genuinely smiling, then you have to think about something nice for a moment or at least remember to wink.
Method 3 of 3: Trying Other Types of Smiles
Step 1. Try the squinching technique
The squinching technique is the same as smizing, namely lowering the eyelids a little and blinking a little. In the meantime, smile a little with your mouth, but don't grin fully. This is more subtle than smiling with an open eye and it gives the impression that you are a friendly and attractive person. Some people think that this type of smile helps someone look better when photographed, because it shows self-confidence and sexual attractiveness.
Step 2. Practice smiling teeging
This smile has more to do with the mouth than the eyes, but these two parts of the face still play a role. Teeging is opening your mouth slightly so your teeth are visible and your tongue is pressing against your teeth. At the same time, blink your eyes a little. If done right, smiling with the teeging technique will make you look playful and funny. If you try this teeging smile for a selfie, do it from the side, not from the front.
Step 3. Laugh out loud
Laughing out loud at something funny is a great way to make yourself smile. Try to hold it for a moment when you have a big smile on your face and take a selfie when you are smiling sincerely. You will appear happy, excited, and attractive. And most important of all is that the smile will not appear fake or artificial.
Tips
- When you smile, make a genuine, reassuring smile. Don't let anyone teach you how to smile. Do it your own way and it will result in a beautiful smile.
- The Duchene's smile and frown occurred simultaneously. And that makes sense because genuinely happy people will think positively and a few wrinkles won't make them anxious!
- When you find it really difficult to smile because of the tension in your face or a tense headache, you can do relaxation exercises.
