The suitcase will be difficult to open if you never find the key combination. Your best chance is to read the user manual for the corresponding key, or search the internet for it as each key can be slightly different. However, most keys function on the same principle, namely using a reset button, reset lever, or reset padlock.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Changing the Key with the Reset Button
Step 1. Unlock it first
Often times, the keys have to be in the right combination before you can switch them to another combination. Match the combinations and make sure the lock is unlocked.
If the suitcase is new, the combination is sometimes provided with the item. Normally, this combination is just "000"
Step 2. Find the reset button
Often times, locks will have a reset button on the bottom or side. You may need a paper clip, pen, or pencil to press the button and start the reset process.
Step 3. Enter the new combination
While pressing the reset button, enter the new combination on the lock. Set to the desired set of numbers. Make sure this new combination is easy to remember.
Step 4. Release the button
When done, release the button, and the lock has been reset. Don't forget to randomize the combination numbers to confirm the lock when it's ready to go.
Method 2 of 3: Entering the New Key Code Using the Lever
Step 1. Find the lever
This lever can be in a suitcase. Sometimes this lever is also mounted on the outside of the suitcase near the combination wheel. You need to know the key combination to open it and unzip.
Step 2. Slide the lever to the reset position
To change the combination, the lever needs to be in the lock setting position. Usually, you simply slide the lever to the second position.
Step 3. Change the combination
Enter the new combination into the lock. Make sure the new combination is easy to remember and adjust the wheel according to the correct combination. Spin each wheel to the desired number.
Step 4. Secure the lock by randomizing the numbers
Press the lever back to the first position. Make sure you have set the lock correctly by shuffling the numbers and entering a combination to see if the lock opens. If it is certain that the lock will open again, randomize the combination numbers again and finish locking the suitcase.
Method 3 of 3: Changing the Code on the Padlock
Step 1. Remove the lock
The lock must be opened first. Set the lock to the appropriate code, such as "000" if it's new, and pull the lock up to unlock it.
Step 2. Rotate the lock 90 degrees and press down
How to turn and press the lock depends on the key you have. Start by moving it 90 degrees from the locked position.
If this doesn't reset the lock, try turning it 180 degrees first, pressing down, and turning it back 90 degrees. You won't know if the lock has been reset until you enter a new combination and try to unlock it with that combination
Step 3. Reset the combination number
If the lock has wheels, turn to the new combination while still holding the lock. If the lock has a large dial, enter the new combination there.
Step 4. Turn the padlock back to the starting position
Once the new combination is entered, move the padlock back to the lock position. Check to make sure the new combination works on the lock.
