Pomade is a styling mix that's generally made from wax or oil, and provides a sleek, shiny look that won't dry out your hair. While there are a variety of expensive pomade products on the market, you can easily and cheaply make your own pomade at home using natural ingredients such as beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter. These ingredients are good for hair health and strength. Create a high-strength pomade mixture from beeswax that is suitable for shaping styles with a certain structure. You can also make a shea butter-based pomade with a medium hold for a neat everyday look, or a light, gentle pomade that nourishes your hair and is effective for styling naturally curly hair.

Step
Method 1 of 3: Making Pomade from Beeswax
Step 1. Prepare a double pan
To make pomade from beeswax, you will first need to melt the wax to make it easy to mix with other ingredients. Place a double pot on the stove over low-medium heat and water until it reaches a height of 2.5 centimeters in the bottom pot.
- If you don't have a dedicated double pan, you can make a substitute double pan by placing a small saucepan on the stove, pouring water into the pot until it's 2.5 centimeters from the bottom of the pot, and placing a heatproof bowl into the pot of water.
- Use a bowl that's wide enough so that it sits on top of the pot, and doesn't have to go into it.
Step 2. Put the beeswax in the top pan
Pour 20 teaspoons (100 ml) of beeswax into a top saucepan (or a heatproof bowl if you're using a spare double pan).
Step 3. Melt the wax
Once placed in the pan, the wax will begin to soften and melt. Stir the wax with a wooden spoon until it is completely melted.
Step 4. Add coconut oil and essential oils
Once the wax is completely melted, add 20 teaspoons (100 ml) of virgin coconut oil and 20 drops of your favorite essential oil.
Step 5. Stir the mixture until smooth
Use a wooden spoon to stir the mixture as it heats up. Stop stirring when all the ingredients are completely melted and the mixture appears even.
Step 6. Pour the mixture into the container
When you're done making the pomade mixture, pour the mixture into a small, clean lidded container. Make sure you scrape the mixture against the walls of the pot to get all the pomade.
Step 7. Refrigerate the pomade for at least three hours
After pouring the entire pomade into the container, allow the mixture to cool for at least three hours before using. By letting it sit, the mixture will solidify until it reaches the right consistency for use on hair.
Method 2 of 3: Making Pomade from Shea Butter
Step 1. Add water to the bottom pan
For medium-hold pomade, place the pan on the stove over medium-low heat first. Pour water into the bottom pan until it's 2.5 centimeters high, then place the second pot back on top of the bottom pot.
If you don't have a special double pan, place the pot on the stove and add water until it reaches a height of 2.5 centimeters. After that, place the heatproof bowl over the pan
Step 2. Place the shea butter and beeswax pastilles in a saucepan
Add 3 tablespoons 45 ml of shea butter and 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of beeswax pastilles to the saucepan and stir with a large spoon until melted.
Step 3. Combine jojoba oil and arrowroot powder in a bowl
Take a separate bowl and add the jojoba oil, arrowroot powder, and vitamin E (if desired). Stir all ingredients until evenly mixed.
- Vitamin E promotes growth and strengthens hair. You can find liquid vitamin E products from health food stores.
- Ararut is a hair thickening agent. You can buy arrowroot powder from a health food store or large supermarket. You can also replace arrowroot powder with cornstarch if you have trouble getting it.
Step 4. Mix the shea butter with the jojoba oil mixture
Remove the pan from the heat and pour the jojoba oil mixture into the shea butter mixture in the saucepan.
Step 5. Add essential oil and stir the mixture
Add 10 drops of the essential oil of your choice, then mix it with the other ingredients using an egg beater or hand mixer for 2-3 minutes until the mixture thickens.
Although not mandatory, essential oils can give your pomade a sweet scent
Step 6. Pour the pomade into the container
Once the essential oil has been added, scoop or pour the pomade mixture into a jar or small container with a lid. Make sure you scrape the mixture off the walls of the pan to get the whole pomade. Once cool, the pomade is ready to use.
Method 3 of 3: Making Light and Soft Pomade
Step 1. Mix all the ingredients
To make a light, creamy pomade, put shea butter, aloe vera gel, coconut oil, glycerol, and essential oil (or any other oil of your choice) in a large bowl.
You can choose essential oils with the fragrance you like
Step 2. Mix the ingredients until they form a cream
Once added to the bowl, mix all the ingredients with a large spoon. Keep stirring until the ingredients are combined into a cream.
Step 3. Store the cream in small jars or cans
Once the ingredients are combined into a cream, take the mixture and place it in a jar or container with a lid. After that, use pomade to style and smooth your hair!
Tips
- Add more beeswax if you want your pomade to last longer.
- If the pomade feels too harsh, rub it between your fingers to melt it before applying it to your hair. This step may be necessary for beeswax-based pomades.
