By knowing the magnitude of the increase or decrease of a particular subject of calculation, you can compile statistical reports that are useful for scientific papers, articles or business meetings. You must collect the data and enter it into a formula to calculate the percentage increase over a given period. Learn how to use a formula to calculate percentage increments by reading the following steps.
Step
Part 1 of 4: Setting Up Calculations
Step 1. Collect the numbers that you will use so that you can plug them into the percentage increment formula
Prepare two numbers on the same topic, and usually these two data are collected on two different dates.
Step 2. Set up the calculator
You can use a simple calculator on your phone or on your computer.
Step 3. In addition to a calculator, also provide stationery and paper to record your formulas and calculation results
Part 2 of 4: Subtracting to Calculate the Increase
Step 1. Write down the larger number, or the number after the addition
Subtract the initial number from the number after the addition occurs.
For example, write on paper "new amount" - "initial amount." If in 2007 there were 12 job applicants, and currently there are 64 people, then the amount of increase is 52 people
Part 3 of 4: Dividing by Initial Numbers
Step 1. Divide the incremental number by the starting number
You can use a calculator to get an accurate number.
In the example we are discussing, you must enter the number 52 divided by 12. The result in decimal is 4, 33
Part 4 of 4: Multiplying by 100
Step 1. Enter your answer as a decimal number
You need to consider whether you want to use 2 to 7 decimal places from your answer. The larger the increment, the more decimal places you need to get an accurate calculation result
Step 2. Multiply the result of the division in this decimal number by 100
This is a way to convert from decimal to percentage. The result of your calculation is the percentage increment you want to know.
For example, with the number we used in the example above, you would multiply 4.33 by 100 to get a percentage increase of 433%
Tips
- You can also use the same formula to calculate the percentage decrease. If your starting number is greater than the new number, subtract the new number from the starting number. Divide the result of this subtraction by the initial number, then multiply the result by 100. Your answer is the percentage decrease.
- If you want to use this percentage increase for publication or other important purposes, ask your friends or colleagues to double-check your calculation results.
