On the next Saint Patrick's Day, you can celebrate by wearing your own homemade leprechaun hat. These hats are easy to make from paper or fabric, but you need to have a plan to get started. Here are two of the easiest versions of this craft you can try.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Paper Leprechaun Hats
Step 1. Cut out one square for the belt
Scissors of yellow paper in the shape of a square with a length of 7, 6 cm and a width of 5 cm. Cut another square inside to make a hollow belt.
- The remaining outline should be between 1.25 cm and 2.5 cm thick throughout. Leave the remaining edges the same width at each corner.
- Don't cut to the edges when you cut the center. Punch a hole in the center of the square with your scissors, or, if necessary, cut the center out using a cutter or utility knife.
- To make everything as even as possible, draw the outline using a pencil and ruler before you cut it out.
- The center can be removed after you cut it out. However, the outline must remain.
Step 2. Coat the belt with glitter
Apply glue to one part of the paper belt. Sprinkle gold glitter on the glue and let it dry.
- To spread the glue, use a glue stick. Alternatively, you can make dots or lines from the glue and then spread the glue evenly with an old brush or your fingertips.
- Sprinkle extra glitter after you've done the above.
Step 3. Cut the green paper in half
Use scissors to cut the green paper into two small squares.
- If you're not sure where the center of the paper is, fold it in half. Then, unfold and cut out the used part that marks the middle.
- If you are folding the paper in half, get rid of one section and use the other from now on.
Step 4. Draw a belt at the bottom on one of the papers
Carefully, draw a straight line at the bottom of the green paper. Color this bottom with a black marker, crayon, or pencil.
If you want to make a straight line, use a ruler and pencil to make a straight line across the edges of the green square. This straight line should be 2.5 cm thick across the green square
Step 5. Form a cylinder
Apply glue to the ends of the paper. Twist the other end so that it passes over the glued area and forms a cylinder. Press both ends and let dry.
The paper should be face up with the black part showing when you apply glue to one side. However, the part that goes through the glue section should touch the glue from the back of the paper
Step 6. Cut out the circle
Place the cylinder on top of another green paper. Draw a circle rotating the cylinder about 5 cm wider than the cylinder. Cut out the circle.
If you need help with this first circle, you can use an inverted bowl or similar circular surface. Make sure the diameter of the object you are using is larger than the cylinder diameter of about 5 cm or more
Step 7. Divide the circle into rings and center
Place the cylinder on top of the circle again. Draw an outline of the same size and make sure the diameter of the second circle is the same as the diameter of the cylinder. Cut out this circle.
- Avoid making circles with a diameter smaller than the diameter of the cylinder, because circles that are too short will fall off when placed on top of the cylinder.
- Also avoid making circles that are larger than the diameter of the cylinder, as this will make the center of the ring too large and not fit at the end of the cylinder.
Step 8. Glue a small circle on the top of the cylinder
Use glue or tape to attach the smaller green circle to the top of the hat.
- Place the circle on top of your workplace and place the cylinder on it. Use tape to glue the two together, sticking the tape from the inside of the cylinder and not from the outside.
- If using glue, you will need to place the circle on your workspace and then grease the ends of the circle with glue. Place the cylinder on top so that it sticks with glue.
Step 9. Place the ring under the cylinder
Use glue or tape to attach the green ring to the bottom of the hat.
- With the hat still upside down, place the ring on it. Glue the two sheets together with tape from the inside of the cylinder and from the bottom edge.
- If you are using glue, place the ring on top of your workspace and carefully grease the edges of the cylinder with glue. Place the cylinder on top so that it sticks with glue.
Step 10. Glue the belt with the cap
Apply glue to the paper belt. Glue the paper belt on the black line at the bottom of the hat and let it dry.
- It is better if the lining of the hat is facing backwards and the belt is directly in front of the lining on the front of the hat.
- Your paper leprechaun hat is ready.
Method 2 of 2: Cloth Leprechaun Hat
Step 1. Cut out large circles from strong green fabric
The circle should have a diameter of 30.5 cm.
- Be aware that a wrinkle-resistant fabric is recommended for this project. If you can find a strong fabric, such as a thick cloth, then the results will be much better.
- The instructions for this hat are intended for young children. For an adult hat, you will need a larger circle with a diameter of 45.7 cm.
Step 2. Divide the circle into rings and center the circle
Cut out a small circle from your previous circle. The diameter of this circle should be approximately equal to the diameter of the hat wearer's head.
To find out the diameter of the hat wearer's head, use a measuring tape around the wearer's head where the hat is placed. Divide this number by pi or 3, 14, then round to determine the correct diameter of the hat
Step 3. Cut out the squares for the body of the hat
Use the same green cloth for the circle. The length of the square should roughly equal the circumference of the small circle with an additional 2.5 cm for the lining. The width of the box is about 30.5 cm.
- The layers of the smaller circles are also the same size as the layers on your head.
- For an adult size head, you can widen the fabric up to 45.7 cm to create a more balanced hat.
Step 4. Use an iron on the fabric to add stability to the hat
If you are using a thin cloth, place the iron on the back of the cloth and iron it together.
- Note that this step is not necessary if you are using a thick, self-sustaining fabric.
- When using an iron on fabric, cut out a piece of fabric that matches the dimensions of the box body. Use the iron on the right side, which should be clearly marked, so that it points to the opposite side of the fabric and iron it in place, so that the iron passes through the fabric firmly and securely and doesn't peel or shift when you put it together. When it has cooled, remove the backing paper.
Step 5. Form a cylinder from the box body
Fold the fabric square in half, with the wrong side facing out, then stab it in place. Sew a straight thread across the front of the fabric, about 1.25 cm from the end of the fabric.
If you sew using a sewing machine, a simple straight stitch will do. If you sew by hand, sew using the backstitch method to make your thread more durable
Step 6. Stitch and sew the top of the cylinder
With the wrong side still facing out and the wrong side of the small circle facing up, pierce the loop through the open side of the cylinder. Sew in place.
- The correct sections of the fabric shouldn't be visible to you for now, but they should all be facing each other.
- If you're using a sewing machine, you can make simple straight stitches. If sewing by hand, sew using the backstitch method to give your thread more durability.
Step 7. Stitch and sew the edges to the hat
Turn the hat and correct part outward. Pierce the inside of the ring into the remainder of the open edge of the hat and sew in place.
- If the outer edge of the ring breaks, you can use glue to stop the cracking.
- If using a sewing machine, you can use a simple straight stitch. If sewing by hand, try sewing using the running stitch method so that the edges are not stiff and awkward.
Step 8. Cut out the yellow square for the belt
Use strong, sturdy fabric such as thick cloth and cut squares 10 cm wide and 14 cm long. Cut out the second square from the center of this square. Draw an outline with a thickness of 2.5 cm.
If the ends are loose, you can use a needle and thread on the edges
Step 9. Cut out a black square for the ribbon
The black cloth should be 10 cm wide, with the same length as the square.
- Use a strong cloth such as a thick cloth.
- If the ends are loose, you can use a needle and thread on the edges.
Step 10. Attach the belt to the tape
Sew or glue the yellow belt in the center of the black ribbon.
- Try placing the center of the belt past the center of the band. The “belt” of this hat will be symmetrical.
- You can sew the belt by hand in place or attach it using glue.
Step 11. Glue the ribbon to the hat
Sew or glue black ribbon on the bottom of the hat, around the brim.
- The ribbon should rest in a straight line with the tip of the hat. Tie the ends together at the back of the hat and allow them to pass through each other.
- You can sew the belt in place or attach it with glue.
