Whether for a costume or a party, making cone hats is fun and inexpensive. With a little preparation, you can make a simple party hat or a spectacular princess-style hat. The instructions below are for making a simple conical hat, but also follow with ideas for decorating it.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Making a Conical Hat
Step 1. Use poster paper
Poster paper is ideal for making cone hats because it is stiff and easy to glue. The paper can be decorated with stickers or stamps. Alternative materials for making hats can be found in the "Using Other Materials" section of this article.
Step 2. Make a semicircle on the paper
You can use a compass or a large plate to make a semicircle. If with a plate, place the plate on the paper, then follow the shape of the edges with a pencil. Make sure the flat side of the semicircle is at the edge of the paper. How big the hat is made depends on the type of hat you want.
- If you want to make a birthday hat, make a semicircle about 30-40 cm in diameter. The finished hat will be 15-20 cm high.
- If you want to make a clown hat, make a semicircle about 45-50 cm in diameter. The finished hat will be 22-25 cm high.
- If you want to make a witch or princess hat, make a semicircle about 55 cm in diameter. The finished hat will be approximately 28 cm high.
Step 3. Cut the paper into half circles
You can use scissors or a paper cutter (craft knife). If using a cutter, then make sure there is a base under the paper so as not to damage the surface of your workplace; You can use a cutting mat or cardboard.
Step 4. Roll the semicircle into a cone
Roll the flat sides of the semicircle so that they meet each other. The rounded side will be the brim of the hat. Put the hat on your head (or the head of the child who will be wearing it) and roll the joint inward until it's the right size.
Step 5. Staple the bottom side of the joint
When the hat fits, remove it from the head and fix the bottom side of the joint.
Step 6. Glue or tape along the side of the joint
Just apply a thin layer of glue on the inside of the joint, hold it together and hold it until the glue dries. You can also use double-sided tape (double tape); You do this by cutting the tape along the side of the joint and then sticking it on the inside.
Step 7. Add a rubber strap as a fastener
So that the hat does not fall from the head, add a thin rubber strap. Make a hole in the hat, about 1.5-2.5 cm from the base. Then make another hole on the opposite side. Cut a piece of rubber cord about 45 cm long. Thread the ends of the rubber cord through the two holes, then tie a knot. Try wearing a hat and attaching a strap under your chin. If it's too loose, take off the hat and pull one end of the string inward. Make a knot and try wearing the hat again. When it fits, cut off the excess rope. Leave the shoots about 2.5 cm after the knot. Knots can be strengthened with drops of liquid glue or hot glue.
Step 8. The straps can also be made of tape
Cut two pieces of ribbon, about 60 cm each, then glue the ends together on the inside of the brim of the hat. The two bands must be opposite each other. The ribbon is perfect for a princess style hat. Try wearing a hat, tying the two ribbons into a pretty knot, and trimming if there's any excess.
Step 9. The hat can also be attached to the headband using hot glue
Put the hat on the headband, then mark the places where the headband comes into contact. Put the headband aside first. Dab a bit of hot glue just above the marker. Immediately put the hat on the headband again and hold it until the glue hardens.
This is more effective for short, small hats (such as birthday hats) than for tall styles (such as princess or witch hats)
Part 2 of 3: Refining and Decorating the Hat
Step 1. Try decorating your hat
Make your hat unique with decorations, such as wearing stickers, pompons, and colorful stones. This section contains tips for decorating as well as some princess and witch hat ideas.
Step 2. Add the stars to make a witch hat
Witches love to study the stars, so their hat can show this. To make your conical hat look more "magical", add stars! You can use a sticker or a stencil in the shape of a star.
- If you want to draw the stars yourself, maybe you can use glow in the dark paint.
- The top of the hat can be decorated with stars. You can buy a flat star ornament out of wood (or just cut it out of poster paper), then give it a glow-in-the-dark paint. Once the paint is dry, attach the star to the top of the hat with hot glue.
Step 3. A conical princess hat can be shawled at the top
Princess hat must have a scarf. Cut out a piece of tulle (twice the width). Tie one end with a rubber band. Cut the top of the hat (no more than 2.5 cm) and then insert the cloth that has been tied with the rubber band into the hole. So that the scarf is firmly attached you can use hot glue from the inside of the hat.
- Scarves can also be replaced with long tassels of ribbon.
- The hat can also be given a wide brim.
Step 4. Adding a wide edge
You can make the hat more interesting (the princess style will be even more beautiful) if the bottom edge is given a wide edge. Prepare a tape measure and measure the diameter of the base of the hat; remember the numbers carefully. Make a pattern of the wide edge according to the size of the diameter and then cut it out. Attach the wide edge to the brim of the hat using hot glue or liquid glue. Here are some ideas for those wide edges:
- Tinsel paper
- Strands of thin feathers (feather boa, can be from marabou feathers [a type of stork] or other)
- Zigzag/wavy colorful ribbons or strands
- crepe paper
- Pompons
- Glossy Powder
Step 5. Add the crepe paper and curly ribbons
Long strands of crepe paper can be the top decoration for an easy version of a princess hat. Shorter strands or curly ribbons can decorate the bottom so it looks like hair. Do not cover the entire brim of the hat with strands of crepe paper, later the wearer will not be able to see!
- Curly ribbons (usually to decorate balloons) can be made by rubbing the ribbon against the blade of a pair of scissors. Hold the end of the tape with your thumb, then slide it against the blade of the scissors with a downward pull.
- Attach the crepe paper to the inside edge of the hat using liquid glue. Attach the curly ribbon to the inside edge of the hat using hot glue.
Step 6. Add some pompons
Your hat will look even cuter if you add a glossy pompon on top. Cut the top of the hat, apply hot glue to the hole. Immediately apply the glossy pompons to the glue layer.
Step 7. Make plain hats more festive with stickers, paper cutouts of various shapes, or stencils
A plain hat can be made more festive by adding various decorations. You can use stickers, glued pieces of paper, or stencils to depict various shapes with acrylic paint.
Step 8. Also add gloss to the hat
Use clear liquid glue to make an ornate pattern on the hat, then sprinkle some gloss powder. Rotate the hat while sprinkling the gloss so that it is fully exposed. If you want to use more than one color, then use glue and gloss for the first color first, let it dry before adding glue and glitter powder for the next color.
- Draw cute decorations, such as stars, circles, waves, and spirals.
- Draw zigzag waves on the wide edge of the hat to make it stand out.
- If you're making a lot of hats for a party, it's a good idea to make each hat more personal by writing the name of each invitation with glue, then sprinkling the person's favorite color with glitter.
- If you want to make the whole hat shiny, then use spray glue. Shake the can of glue for a moment and then aim it at the hat at a distance of about 15-20 cm. Spray glue, not too much but preferably evenly, then wait for it to dry before applying a second coat.
- We recommend that you use a paper holder or paper plate during work. So, after you're done with work, the paper or paper plate can be rolled into a funnel, then the remaining gloss powder can be filled back into the storage container.
Step 9. Add colorful stones or beads
Your hat can be even more cling if it is attached with colorful stones or beads. You can use ready-to-paste stones which are usually used to make scrapbooks; can usually be found in the sticker section of a craft hobby shop; or you can also attach fake gems or beads to the hat using hot glue.
Step 10. Make a cute hat with feather wire
For a cute and funny hat, add feather wire. Bend the feather wire, whatever shape it is in, but make sure the bottom is about 2.5 cm straight. Cut off the top of the hat, and thread the feather wire through the hole. If necessary, glue the feather wire to the inside of the hat using liquid glue or hot glue. You can use just a single feather wire, or more than one. Here are some more ideas:
- Bend the feather wire into a zigzag shape.
- Wrap the feather wire around the pencil and then pull the pencil out slowly to create a spiral.
- The top end of the feather wire can be shaped interestingly, for example into a star or swirl, while the rest is straight.
- Try twisting two feather wires at once to create colorful loops like candy bars. The coil can then be reshaped as suggested above.
- Feather wire can look funnier by attaching small pompons to the ends using hot glue. This decoration is very sweet when combined with feather wire that is shaped like a spiral or spring.
Step 11. Making Santa's hat
When Christmas is near, a red cone hat can be turned into a Santa hat by attaching a white fluffy pompon at the top, as well as cotton balls or a layer of white fur around the base of the hat.
Step 12. Also think of a theme or event that matches your hat
If you make a hat for a party, then when decorating, try to adjust it to the theme or event. Here are some ideas:
- If the party is fish themed, then make a blue hat and decorate it with fish stickers or something like bubbles. Apply glue on the wide edge of the hat and then sprinkle with sand. Also glue a few strands of green crepe paper that resembles seaweed.
- If the hat is for a baby shower, and it's pink and white themed because the baby is a girl, then make a pink hat with white feathers on the edges. The top of the hat can be decorated with white pompons or tassels of bird feathers. Instead of just plain pink, the hat material can also be pink with stripes or white polka dots.
- If the hat is for a Halloween party, then it can also be orange and black, plus spooky decorations. Glue the black tinsel on the brim of the hat, as well as the plastic spider on the top. The plastic spider can also be attached to a string or feather wire and then glued to the top of the hat.
Part 3 of 3: Using Other Materials
Step 1. Use thick paper for crafts (construction paper)
The result will not last long, but more color choices. Also keep in mind that construction paper is likely too small to be made into a large hat model like a princess or witch hat.
Step 2. Use paper for scrapbooks or cardstock (a type of thick cardboard)
Cardstock is strong enough and comes in a variety of colors, but is likely too small to make into a large hat like a princess or witch hat. This type of paper is usually about 22x28 cm, or 30x30 cm.
Step 3. Try adding a motif with a stamp
Your conical hat can be patterned easily, simply by using a patterned cap. Look for a stamp with a design you like and also a stamp pillow. Press the stamp into the stamp pad, shaking it slightly so that the entire stamp is covered with ink, then stamp the paper. Repeat until your paper is all patterned.
- Note that the ink from the stamp pad is somewhat see-through. This means that the original color of your paper will be visible. Example: if you use a red stamp on a yellow poster paper, the motif will turn orange.
- For best results, it is recommended to combine white paper with any color ink, or black ink with any paper color.
Step 4. You can also make motifs using wrapping paper
You can make your cone hat more interesting by layering the wrapping paper on top of the poster paper. Open a roll of wrapping paper with the patterned side down. Apply spray glue to the back of the wrapping paper (white side), then place the poster paper on top of the glue layer.
To protect your work surface, try covering it with old newsprint or a plastic tablecloth
Step 5. Wrap the cone hat with flannel or cloth
You can make a cool princess or witch-style hat by covering poster paper with cloth or flannel. Cut a piece of cloth the size of your poster paper and lay it out on a flat surface with the front side down. The back side of the fabric should be facing you. Use spray glue, not too much but spray evenly, then stick the poster paper on the fabric.
Step 6. Color your poster paper with paint
If you don't find poster paper with the right color, you can just paint it yourself. You can use a large brush with a flat tip and acrylic paint, or spray paint.
- If you're using acrylic paint, paint it in an even, thin layer. Wait for the paint to dry, then add a second coat. The second layer is to cover the brush traces.
- If you use spray paint, direct the spray about 15-20 cm from the surface of the paper and then spray it evenly. If you want to paint in two coats, wait for the first coat to dry before starting the second coat.
Step 7. Design and print your own motif
You can use image editing software to create your own pattern design and then print it on cardstock or printer paper. It's up to you to design what motif, whether zigzag, stripes, or polka dots. Try mixing bright, contrasting colors, such as bright green and red.
If you use cardstock to make several hats, then insert the cardstock into the printer one at a time so it doesn't get stuck
Step 8. Make the hat more shiny
If you want a shinier hat, then make the hat first, then use a spray of glitter powder all over the hat. If you spray the glitter powder first, it will be difficult to glue or connect the hat because it is completely covered in glitter powder. How to spray shimmer powder on a finished hat: Shake the spray can first, aiming it about 15-30 cm from the surface of the hat, then spray lightly and evenly. Wait for it to dry before applying a second coat.
Step 9. Match the color of the hat to the theme of the party
If the hat is made for a particular party or event, choose a suitable color. Here are some examples:
- If this hat is for a New Year's party, try combining black, gold, and silver. It could also be a black hat with gold and silver edging.
- If this hat is for a party with a turquoise (tuquoise) and white theme, then try making a turquoise blue hat with a white or silver edging. It can also be a turquoise blue hat combined with white stripes or polka dots.
Tips
- If you're making a hat for a party but are running out of ideas, try matching it with the theme or color of the party.
- Match the hat to the event. If you're making a hat for a Halloween party, then the decoration can be something scary, like a plastic spider.
- Look at photos of party hats, clowns, witches, wizards, or princesses a lot for ideas.
- Be careful with your hat. Poster paper is stronger than regular paper, but it's still paper, it can get wrinkled, wrinkled, or torn if treated harshly.
Warning
- Be careful when using scissors to curl the ribbon. Don't let your thumb cut off due to not being careful.
- The glue gun can be very, very hot! Do not touch the still-liquid glue and the metal muzzle of the glue gun. If you work with small children, it might be a good idea to use a low-temperature hot glue gun. It's still quite hot, but at least it reduces the risk of scalding.
- When using the cutter, make sure the direction of the cut is away from your body. Protect your workbench, during work use a base underneath, such as cardboard or cutting mats.
