Do you want a salon-caliber blow without spending a fortune doing it? If you have wavy or curly hair and want it to be blown straight, you need to use the right technique so that it doesn't make your hair curly or coarse. If you prepare your hair properly and blow it carefully, your hair will stay straight, smooth and shiny for several days.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Prep Your Hair
Step 1. Get the right tools
The most basic tool you need to blow your hair is a good hair dryer with nozzles that will direct the heat in a concentrated stream. This tool will provide a smoother blow than one without the nozzle. Most hair dryers have an additional nozzle, but if your hairdryer doesn't have one, you can purchase one separately from a beauty supply store. In addition to a hairdryer, you will also need the following tools:
- Wide tooth comb
- Big round brush
- Heat protection products
- Anti-frizz hair oil or serum
Step 2. Wash your hair
Give shampoo and conditioner to your hair washed normally. Since you plan to blow your hair straight, consider using a straightening shampoo and conditioner to reduce volume before you even start blowing your hair.
Step 3. Dry the hair
As soon as you step out of the shower, use a towel to gently dry the excess water from your hair. Do not wring, rub, or twist your hair, as this can make your hair frizzy. Just use a towel to absorb any water that drips from your hair.
Step 4. Comb the hair
Use a wide-toothed comb to finely comb your hair and untangle any tangles before you start to blow your hair. You can blow your hair better if your hair is untangled. The brush you use can damage your hair if it gets caught in tangled hair.
Step 5. Wear heat protection products
This is an important step to take to protect your hair from heat damage. Heat protection products contain polymers that bond to your hair and keep your hair from being burned by a hairdryer. Spray a small amount (the size of a coin) into the palms of your hands, rub your hands together, and work the product through your hair from roots to tips.
- If you don't have a heat protectant, use a leave-in conditioner or anti-frizz serum. This is better than drying your hair without any protective products at all.
- Avoid using too many protective products, as they can make your hair look dull and even greasy instead of shiny and smooth.
Step 6. Move into the bedroom
Moisture causes curly hair to become more frizzy. So, drying your hair with a hairdryer in the bathroom is not the right thing after you take a hot shower. To get the best results from your blow-dry, blow-dry your hair in a bedroom or other room with a snug, non-humidity mirror.
Method 2 of 3: Blow Hair
Step 1. Dry your hair completely first
Don't blow your hair straight, but start by using a brushless dryer to make your hair about eighty percent dry. Hold the hair dryer a few inches from your head and dry your hair completely. Use your other hand to brush through your hair and tousle the hair to help the entire layer dry evenly. Stop when your hair is still damp, but no longer wet.
Drying thoroughly protects your hair from being damaged by your hairbrush and hairdryer. If you're using the brush straight away, you'll need to run through your hair twice as much to get each section of hair straight. It's best if you work mostly at this point without a brush
Step 2. Pin the top layer of hair
Gather the top layer of your hair and pin or tie it at the top of your head. You'll start by drying the undercoat, and remove the bobby pins to dry more layers of your hair until it's completely dry. This way you can ensure that all of your hair is dry and evenly straight.
Step 3. Hang a small section of your hair on your brush
Select a section of hair to start with and hang it over your brush close to the roots of the hair. The brush should touch your head, with the hair hanging over the brush and hanging down. This will allow you to pull the section of hair tight as it dries, which is key to keeping your hair straight.
Step 4. Turn on the hairdryer and position it two or three inches from the brush
In most cases you will want to use a medium heat setting to reduce damage to your hair. However, if your hair is very curly, use the hottest setting to ensure it dries straight.
Step 5. Point the blow dryer down as you pull the brush from the roots to the ends of the hair
Pull your hair into tension with the brush and brush your hair from roots to ends. At the same time, point your hair dryer down and move it down the length of your hair. The brush and hairdryer must move in sync.
- If your hair lacks volume, you should brush your hair upwards. If you want to allow your hair to fall neatly, brush your hair toward the floor.
- Either way, keep the blow dryer pointing down, so that the airflow moves from the roots to the ends. This helps the hair shaft stay straight and prevents it from becoming frizzy.
Step 6. Repeat several times until the section of hair dries
One brush is usually not enough to dry a section of hair. Keep drying the same sections until they are completely dry and straight. Remember to brush from root to tip, keeping hair taut and straight. Point the hair dryer down.
Step 7. Continue section by section
Continue until all layers below have dried, then remove the pins on the next layer and repeat. Continue until your hair is completely dry from top to bottom.
Method 3 of 3: Finishing the View
Step 1. Blow your hair with cold air. Set your hairdryer to a cool setting and finish the top layer blowing your hair with cool air from the roots down to the ends. This helps the hair shaft to be straight and prevents frizz throughout the day.
Step 2. Apply serum to keep your hair smooth
Use a frizz serum or argan oil to keep your hair shiny and straight. Rub a small amount on your fingers and run through your hair, focusing on the ends of your hair, which usually dry faster than the rest of your hair.
Step 3. Use a straight iron if needed
Curly or wavy hair is difficult to straighten using a hairdryer alone. Your hair should be fine, but it shouldn't be flat. If you want your hair to be perfectly straight, use a straight iron on each section of hair.
Tips
- Always point the hair dryer down when you blow dry your hair; blowing hair up can cause frizz.
- Tame unruly hair with an anti-frizz serum or hair oil. Pour a few drops into your hands, rub gently to spread them out, then apply them to your hair according to the product instructions.
- After you dry your hair, use a comb to remove any flyaway hairs and achieve a straighter, shiny look.
- To get evenly straight hair, finish styling with a ceramic flat-iron after following the steps above. Choose a heat setting for your hair type, and allow the flat-iron to heat up before using.
- Avoid damp places. Your hair will curl again if it gets wet, so try to keep your hair dry and away from moisture. Wear a hat if it's crunchy outside.
